Notre Dame @ tOSU, Sat Sep 3, 7:30PM (ABC)

RYAN DAY
  • "We just beat the No. 5 team in the country by 11 points. I couldn't be any prouder of the way we played. A lot of people questioned our toughness after last year. Well, you look at the film and be the judge."
  • "If we can continue to win games like that, then that's how we'll win games."
  • Day says "it was a struggle early on" and that the loss of Jaxon Smith-Njigba threw the Buckeyes off rhythm. Day credits Xavier Johnson for stepping up and scoring a touchdown in the second half.
  • Day says "the 10 points" were what he was most happy with during the game, in reference to Ohio State's defensive performance.
  • "I'm glad we played them at home because this crowd was awesome." Day says seeing all the former players and fans at the Shoe gave the Buckeyes energy.
  • Day says "we hope to get" Julian Fleming and JSN back this week.
  • Day calls Xavier Johnson "a throwback player" and "it goes to show you that good things happen to good people that work hard. That's who Xavier is."
  • "We have to be able to win that we. We do." Day says Notre Dame is built like many of the teams in the Big Ten are, and the Buckeyes "have to be able to win ugly on offense and stop the run on defense."
  • Day says "it wasn't perfect, it wasn't the way we drew it up, but we won."
  • Day says "we wanted to be known as something more than just talented." Day says TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams "ran hard" and "were determined" at the end of the game. Day says Williams had a "really good preseason" and had 84 "hard-earned yards."
  • Day says the Buckeyes have to be able to run the ball and play defense to reach their goals this season, and they showed that tonight.
Day says "we hope to get" Julian Fleming and JSN back this week.

That's very good news!!!

Beating a good team - ND will win most of their games - when you're clearly not at your best, is a positive thing. Embrace it.

Yeah, Day made the following comment during his post game interview:

On getting the running game going – “Well, I just I felt like we just were kind of out of rhythm we just couldn't quite put two plays together and then convert on third down. It just wasn't going very well. And we missed a couple things early on. And probably we went away from the run a little early on. I think we're doing okay, the running game just statistically. I looked at one point we were averaging like five yards a carry.

“They had nickel in the games we had five DBs in there. And we had to rely on the run. And that's okay, I can see more teams trying to do that. They kind of want to control the clock and keep our offense off the field. If we're able to win like this, then that we can win in different ways. And that's going to help us up have a road.”

Just sayin': The great teams just find a way to win the game.

I felt positive about the game after last night and I'm feeling even more positive this morning. Defense looked like a complete 180 from last year. Felt like half of NDs yardage came off of weird ass plays. And still held them to less than 300 yards of total offense in their first debut. Run defense looked night and day better compared to last year. Pass defense had two busts, one really since the first one was more of a missed tackle rather than a complete bust. I was expecting more bend but don't break for the first game. Never expected them to be as dominant as they were the first game.

Offense, after thinking about it, I'm a little more high on. OSU hasn't been able to run the ball against a team with decent athletes in awhile, so last night put a LOT of my fears to bed. Passing game was obviously a disappointment but that's the least of my concerns. Was super pleased with the running game. First time in awhile OSU could run on a decent team when they absolutely needed to. I thought the offensive line was pretty good considering the reshuffling. My big disappointment is Day not leaning on the running game earlier. In the first half it felt like every time we'd get a positive gain on the ground we'd go away from it and kill drives. That's been a concerning pattern with Day for awhile now. Luckily the second half was all runs all the time and it was beautiful to see.

Stroud seems to be comfortable with EE2.

Agree; I think another good takeaway is thst it sounds like Day had a bit of a realization during this game as far as a grinding win; he needs to one: not go away from it so early and ensure that it’s able to be utilized at any given time.

ND has an excellent pass rush; remember Barrett didn’t have but 2 seconds to throw against VT 2014; some guys are adjusting on the OL to new spots; CJ is adjusting to having 3 new wide receivers. You can have a 30 week training camp but it’ll never fully prepare you and get you acclimated like game play will.

I think we collectively underestimated the bumps the changes on offensive could bring — in conjunction with facing a defense that came ready to rock.

The defense surprised the hell out of me. I expected to see improvement — not a holistically badass performance like we saw last night that was outstanding from Q1-q4. The challenge is to find consistency.

I’m not excited by the Ark State game but it’s an opportunity to sharpen, acclimate and offer JSN and Fleming time to get right — but Stroud needs game reps with the wideouts that are getting increased playing time.

It was entitled and arrogant of me to think we could go in and win that game 49-14; we outmuscled a good team and we haven’t done that in a really long damn time.

Agreed. The Knowles hire is paying off. Defense looks faster and obviously more aggressive. I’m not overly concerned about the offense to be honest. They put together a couple of really strong drives in the second half against a decent team. Solid win. On to Arky State.

Kind of a general question. I am both lucky and unlucky to be at work during games. I'm in charge of making the game is on. Among many other potential things. So I didn't get to laser in on the first half. It seemed like there were opportunities, but the Buckeyes weren't quite clicking. Fair to say? Or was ND just getting after it?

Even prior to JSN getting injured, the rhythm was terrible.

I credit ND defensive line which was getting pressure & ND 2 safety high look. It’s tough to throw against that and we probably should’ve established out run game first and foremost to try and bring them down a bit.

I’ve said it a few times, but this isn’t really new under Day….we seem to struggle offensively early in year until it seemingly clicks around week 4. Hopefully they’re able to exploit Arky State next weekend and get on track….
