College football rankings, grades: Ohio State earns 'A+', Oregon gets 'F' in Week 1 report card

College football grades: Week 1 report card

A+ The Buckeyes didn't cover vs. Notre Dame, but that was not the most important development on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. The much-maligned defense held the Fighting Irish to just 253 yards, 3 of 13 on third downs and just 12 total first downs in the debut of new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. The offense will come around (and did late in the game), but the defensive performance shows that this team is for real.

Someone else mentioned this and I was surprised I hadn't thought of it before.

This was basically the 2020 CCG against Northwestern. They played the same style of D and it took Day a half and change to realize how committed they had to be to the run game to take what they were given. Only thing missing was the explosive run plays, but I don't think we have to worry about that.

So, a win beats what? If it's to Michigan it's a gut punch, but there's always next year. But a loss to the domers is a very sharp stick in the eye with few chances for revenge. While I was hoping for a more robust show of offensive power, Notre Dame was determined to give the Bucks as few possessions as possible and to eat as much clock as they could. So 21 points beats the sharp stick in the eye and this morning finds my Buckeye flag flying high.

That should be a satisfying win Cincy. Congrats on yet again demonstrating to Notre Dame where they rank in terms of the big boys.

I am a huge fan of that Williams guy. Use him more please.

Here is what I like about this game in hindsight. The Bucks had to gut it out, abandoning their game plan. They could not do everything they wanted to do. They know that the D is much better than last year and that the O does not have laser beams and rainbows spouting from their backsides. The lofty expectations will now become more realistic. They and everyone else know that it won't be easy. They're going to have to reach deep again this year...and I think this experience makes it much, much more likely that they will.

I guess my question is why is it taking almost 3 full quarters to commit to consistent running if it’s what’s being given to us? There are a few games like this logged and it’s still seems to take 75% of a game to finally change the approach.

I'd assume it has to do with not getting through scripted plays quickly and also just diverting from a preconceived gameplan take time.

Is there a prize for being the 100th person to make the following observation?

  • Malik Zaire said Stroud had to play perfectly for Ohio State to win
  • Malik Zaire said this was because ND had the better O-line and front seven
  • Stroud had his fewest yards per attempt of his career, was far from perfect
  • Ohio State won anyway because Ohio State could run when it mattered and ND could not
Bonus observation:

I bet Malik has a lot of people pointing out the above in his TL today. This is probably resulting in a lot more activity than normal on his social media accounts. This in turn is probably resulting in a fresh crop of people that will look at that and realize that nothing drives more social media buzz than being spectacularly arrogant while being spectacularly wrong.

Congratulations Malik. You just birthed a nation … of trolls

Sucked as a QB, sucks even worse as a "pundit." But he appears to be establishing himself as a Twitter lightning rod...so...yay?
