Notre Dame (football only discussion)

If the Big Ten really wants Notre Dame they should force the issue and stop "empowering" them by not scheduling them. Notre Dame wants it both ways. They want Independence but the big draw of Big Ten games.
Time to "force' Notre Dame's hand.
i agree, but i don't think it will happen. michigan and nd signed a contract to play each otehr for another 20 years a few years ago. also, whether the irish are good or bad, teams who play them make money when they do. economically, it still makes sense to play nd, even if you want them to join the big 10.

Kelly took a big a chance putting Crist back in that game too. I would hope most coaches would see health of the kid over importance of a victory.

Like when RR put Robinson right back in the game (I think he missed one play), after he rolled around on the ground for a few minutes with what appeared to be a pretty serious hip injury?

he had the wind knocked out of him after falling on the ball. he didn't lose vision in his right eye and get thrown back out there. what kelly did was dangerous.

you're saying that it's the same thing to diagnose a head injury as a hip injury. don't think so.

and I didn't see him "roll around on the ground." skip ahead to 9:18 of the highlights. He pops right up and is wincing.

again, head injury little more difficult to diagnose on the sideline.

all right, I believe he sat out 3 or 4 plays, as well as the break between the 3rd and fourth quarters. Upon coming back into the game, the rest of the scoring drive he didn't run the ball. Hand offs and a long completion on a nice play fake. TD came on a screen pass. So if he was having any ill effects from whatever it was, be it a hip pointer or having the wind knocked out of him, i'd say the play calls catered to him not going out and running it right back up the middle immediately.

Again, you're talking about body parts that can be assessed on the sidelines where it's obvious if they are hurt. You can't fake like you're not injured in the leg or hip area. You either have the range of motion or you don't. It's pretty obvious.

dealing with the brain and concussions and blurred vision are a completely different animal.

but we're each going to see what we want to see.

IMO, Kelly put the W before the possibility of Crist having a head injury. There was a kid who played football from Penn that just committed suicide last week because of brain injuries from football. There's way to much gray area in dealing with the brain, IMO.

I didn't say that at all. I said that what appears to be a serious hip injury could impact "the health of the kid" (your words).
You're really reaching here. Kids go down all the time and come right back in. How you can guess that he had a "serious" hip injury is beyond me...he looked dinged up to me.

You could be right, but I really do think that the Big Ten will seriously consider stopping playing Notre Dame. Add two more teams and a requirement to play 9 Big Ten games and Notre Dame will find it very difficult to find Big Ten opponents.

Reason #1 why the domers want no part of a Big Ten schedule. Over the last twenty years (and four coaches), they are 33-27-1 against Big Ten teams.

Well to be fair the last twenty years haven't been very kind to ND. They have struggled not only to the big ten, but in general. They have posted 3 or more losses every season since 1994. They had 9 seasons with 5 or more loses. 4 seasons with a losing record. They had a 9 game bowl losing streak until 2008. I don't buy the ND is scared of the Big Ten concept. There are many reasons that go into why they are independent. ND is just going through a rough patch. They have the resources and all they need is a good coaching staff to get them back.

Maybe they're downplaying the thing, but I'm gonna retract what I said about keeping Crist out after the injury. From what Crist said, the symptoms were over within an hour and he felt fine afterwards. He said he had a concussion in high school and this was not the same. This could be ND downplaying the whole thing, but I dunno. Crist did say that he wanted to go back out immediately regardless of the blurred vision, he wanted to be out there helping the team as long as he wasn't hurting them, however the coaches were the ones keeping him off the field. Gutsy kid, especially considering he finished that opening drive with several plays after the initial hit.

I was talking about the UConn game, not the ND game.

I figured you were referencing the UM/ND game as well. There was 1 play that Robinson went down and sat out for a snap, however it wasn't the hit that Wolverine pointed out in the highlights.

Saw some clips of the UM-ND game, and ND's defense is horrible. On several plays, Te'o was getting his [censored] kicked by Omameh. I'm sorry, but if the leader of your defense is getting absolutely housed by a player the caliber of Omameh, you shouldn't be expecting much out of this season.

T'eo does need to do a better job getting off of blocks, but he still had a respectable game. He ended with 13 tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass deflection...not bad for a Sophomore. He had a chance at an INT, but it was a stretch and he couldn't haul it in, that would have been big. The defense does need to step up in a big way. Aside from giving up one big play at Purdue, they played well that first week. When Crist went out, the defense was crippled for the rest of the half. They came out the 2nd half and kept Michigan out of the endzone until that last drive. Maybe they were tired, maybe they were outcoached, maybe it was a little of both. In the end the turnover margin was huge and it's probably what ended up costing us the game.
