What "big" games are the other platforms banking on? Halo 3. Gran Turismo 5. God of War 3. Final Fantasy 13. Hot Shots Golf 5. Ratchet & Clank whatever. Grand Theft Auto: Pimps & Hos edition!!!111!!

There is a dearth of originality in the video game industry, but that's not Nintendo's problem.

HEY! Don't mess with the Pimps & Hos edition... Ya can't beat buying a hooker and then killing her afterwards to get your money back.

The Wii branded games, Animal Crossing, the Touch Generation games like Brain Age & Big Brain Academy, Nintendogs, etc

All of which could be flash games playable on Yahoo.com :)

I guess what I meant by originality was not a bunch of crossword puzzle spinoffs, but full blown new series, with new characters, new story, new ideas. I will agree that it is a common problem in the gaming world anymore, not just nintendo, but I could list off about 50 brand spankin new series that are coming out on PS3/360. Then when I list off the Wii games, you'd get Metroid 3049039439034, Mario 3093043043, and 604950409549054 variations of Mario. Oh and Smash Brothers 12.

3. Final Fantasy

Couldnt agree more here. God do I hate final fantasy. If it's so final, fucking end it already.

Most of the "original" games are still coming out on PS2. Grim Grimoire, Oden Sphere, The Dot Hacks, Persona, etc, etc.

This was kind of my point as well. I think the last big hit Nintendo released that turned into multiple spinoffs was Mario Party, which started on the 64 I believe. Personally, I think its a ridiculous game, I beat everyone at the mini-games and still end up losing by a mile
While Sony has its fair share of spinoffs, many have been coming within the last generation ala PS2 like the GTA series, God of War, and Ratchet & Clank as mentioned. These were all original games a few years ago that took off and became hits, while Nintendo tends to go to the ol' well more.
As far as Final Fantasy, I don't see the series dying anytime soon. Its probably one of the more profitable video game franchises, if not the most. When it comes to the RPG genre, its hard to top SquareEnix. The titles "Final" Fantasy is pretty humerous, but with as much money as they draw with the name alone, it would be foolish to change it now.

Microsoft's 360 marketshare lead falls this week (well, last week, really)! With another est. quarter-million units sold for the week of Aug. 12-18 versus MS's est. 80K, the figures should fall to approx 10.66M Wii sales against 10.51M 360 sales, lifetime to date, with the PS3 clocking in at 4.25M sold.

Really, for the first time since the PSX went global in Sept. 1995, Ninty is finally back on top.

Anyone get Galaxy yet?

FYI, Toys R Us is running a special this week only: Buy Galaxy and get a $25 gift card.

Toys "R" Us - Newspaper Ads

... and next week (18th - 24th) TRU will be running a Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal for all Wii games, and you can use gift cards for that. So that's three more new releases for $75 if you save the card from buying Galaxy by this Saturday.
