Nintendo Wii: Can't Find A Wii? Blame College Football

Can't Find A Wii? Blame College Football

Every year, the organizers of college football's various bowl games are allowed to spend some cash on the players taking part. It's part souvenir hunt, part pissing contest between the officials. This year, amongst the cameras and shopping sprees and hats and monogrammed travel bags was news that three bowls - Holiday, Allstate BCS National Championship and Valero Alamo - were getting Wiis for the competing teams. And the competing team's staff. And then some.

They shopped. They splurged. The annual quest by bowl officials to show-up one another and in some cases, raise the profile of their games with the hottest, latest tech toys for each player has been all wrapped up.

These aren't stocking stuffers, folks.

"Ours kick butt," Mark Neville, a spokesman for the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia and Pacific Life Holiday bowls, said with a laugh, reveling in the fact the Holiday Bowl was one of three able to track down the coveted Nintendo Wii with two remote controls ($345).

...

You can't put a price tag on the national title, though, and in addition to their shot at one, LSU and Ohio State will also receive a Nintendo Wii package, complete with four games.

CMU Geeks do some pretty darned good stuff.

According to his website he is working on real 3D improvements - probably building on the work in the video.

Great find - when I was at CMRI It was great to see all the stuff these guys would come up that ended up in real world products a couple of years later.

Holy crap...that's awesome...can you imagine that with a 360 somehow with like an NCAA or shooting game? Which probably could be done since it is wireless you could incorporate that. But since I'm not an engineer, I wouldnt even know where to begin.
Head tracking would be more expensive to implement into the 360 than either the Wii or PS3 platforms because, IIRC, the 360 uses 2.4Ghz wireless band for its remotes and not Bluetooth. Without the BT connectivity, you can't use the Wii Remote out of the box, which means you'd need to have either a Bluetooth/USB dongle or a wholly separate IR camera solution built specifically for the 360, or some other means to transfer the data that the camera is receiving at a very high rate back to the console.

That's the beauty of the IR camera being built into the Wii remote allowing the Wii to detect depth in 3D space, which you can't do with any other controller type. To do headtracking on the Wii, all you need to include with the game is a plastic cradle for one Wii remote by the TV and some glasses. To do headtracking on the other platforms, you need the glasses and the IR camera.

EA's Steven Spielberg-produced Wii exclusive "Boom Blox" shipped today.

It has a head tracking mode included within it as an easter egg. :wink2:

It's finally here in the US of A. How many of you are running out at midnight tonight to buy Wii Fit?

It's been a monster around the rest of the world, limited only by shortages of the hardware. 3.29M units sold thus far -- sells out same day just about everywhere.

P.S. if you're still looking for a Wii, tonight/tomorrow will be the time to find one. Retailers should have HUGE allotments of Wiis on-hand for the Wii Fit launch. I mean Christmas-like stock levels.
