Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

Seriously doubt they beat MSU and they should probably tank that game just to avoid another embarrassment in the championship

Just catching up on my reading at BP and I see this. Jinxed, clearly.

What's amazing about that MSU game is that they held the ball for 40 minutes, but we had more yards. They had three good scoring drives, but otherwise we shut them down, including holding them to field goals instead of TDs on very short fields.

Bottom line is, RSBucky is right - facing the Buckeyes in Indy wouldn't be pretty for Nebraska. Still too young, too much growing to do by both the players and the coaches.

Enjoy your Big Ten Title this year, Buckeyes. You pretty much won it when you beat Wiscy.

Plus it should have been ours last year.

Apparently there was a Facebook rumor that was going around that Bo was going to resign. I guess it got enough traction that the football team had a meeting and Bo put the rumors to rest.

By Sports Instigator, Rich Winter

(First of all, let me say I cannot find any credible source that will confirm what I'm about to share with you on this blog)

It has been a rough year for Bo Pelini and the Nebraska Cornhuskers, yet, I look at their record and they are 7-3 heading into their game at Penn State today.

Win out and they go 10-3, pretty good stuff.

Not good enough at Nebraska!

Internet rumors this morning are swirling that Bo Pelini has already signed his resignation papers, that say he will step down as Huskers coach following the Iowa game next Friday.

From one source - Rumor has it that Bo Pelini has resigned as the coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. An anonymous source (which is usually journalist for liar) is claiming that Bo's resignation will be made public following the Iowa game on the day after Thanksgiving – so next Friday. A surprising majority of the Nebraska fan base seems to be overjoyed at the thought of Pelini leaving Lincoln. It's as if the Husker faithful have begun to solely blame Bo and his staff for the Huskers continued shortcomings this year. - http://lukebinder.wordpress.com/2013/11/21/why-is-good-no-longer-good-enough/

Rivals.com from Yahoo Sports has a thread of speculation from people all over the country that are checking in to weigh in on the subject.

Leading candidates are Jim Tressel of Ohio State, Chris Peterson of Boise State, and Kirby Smart D coordinator at Alabama.
Dear Lord, the battles we go through life, We ask for a chance that's fair, A chance to equal our stride, A chance to do or dare. If we should win, let it be by the code, Faith and Honor held high. If we should lose, we'll stand by the road, And cheer as the winners go by. Day by Day, we get better and better! Til' we can't be beat...WON'T BE BEAT!

We've been dealing with this "rumor" of Pelini's resignation for the past few weeks. Bo even had to call a team meeting Thursday before the Penn State trip to tell the team it's BS.

This is the double-edged sword of message boards. They're a great way to disseminate information - and misinformation. We have some Husker message boards for whom the greater fun is disseminating the latter. It's tiresome.

Yeah, there's a lot of misinformation on Internet message boards. You just have to sift through it carefully and look for truth, such as CRAIG JAMES KILLED 5 HOOKERS AT SMU and MARK MAY BLEW 5 DUDES AT PITT.

People misrepresenting themselves and their aims on a message board. I'm horrified.

Gets worse. So, I had an arguement on a Husker board....check this out...some of our fans have no clue that football is played outside of this state...

So for all of you that say he should be fired or gone, what is your recomendationn for replacement? I mean he has his issues but he has won 9 games a season for six years, what coach in his right mind would sign up to coach us if we fire a coach that wins 9 a season.

#1 - The nine wins argument meant something when teams were only playing 10-11 games a season. Most teams play 13-14 games a season now, including championship games.

#2 - Kirby Smart of Alabama is a pretty smart guy. Doug Nussmeier of Bama is too. There is Scott Frost (longshot IMHO), Chad Morris of Clemson. At the NFL level (all longshots), you've got Bill Cowher (don't laugh, the guy is a hard nosed FB coach), Jon Gruden.

The obvious grab would be Craig Bohl from ND State up north. The guy is from Lincoln, played at Lincoln, used to coach at Lincoln, understands the mindset of fans in Nebraska. Doesn't hurt that the guy is a pretty damn good head coach where he is right now, with hard nosed football on both sides of the ball. Did I mention that the guy has won 2 nattys at the FCS level, is 11-0 right now, has a 39-2 record since 2011, and has won over 75% of his games in 11 years as the HC?

NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO.
There's a reason Craig Bohl is a good FCS coach.

Some guy named James Tressel would beg to differ with your opinion, sir.

Bye Bye Big XII, on 29 November 2013 - 11:24 PM, said:
You do know that Jim Tressel actually had success on a FBS level, right?

alexhortdog95, on 29 November 2013 - 11:26 PM, said:
You're confusing me. Jim Tressel was the head coach at Youngstown State (FCS). He won four championships at that level. He replaced John Cooper at Ohio State. Won a national championship, played in two others (total of 8 BCS games). What am I missing from your argument?

Ironically, John Cooper went 4-6-1 in his first season, 7-4-1 in 1990, and 6-6 in his 2nd to last season. All other seasons? won more than 8 games in a season. He coached some guy named Mark Pelini, I believe...

My guess would be they replace a coordinator. His buyout is crazy (why do all these schools give such ridiculous buyouts and award extensions for mediocrity or one-off successes)
I think it also depends a lot on the bowl result. Iowa should have been favored w/injury situation at QB and OL.

To play devils advocate, couldn't you blame the lack of success on turnovers from your four year QB that never got any better and injuries?

Neither of those things can really be blamed on the head coach.

That said, Pelini hasn't exactly handled things with class and professionalism which doesn't help his cause.

The defense has also been highly suspect and there's no defending that.

Maybe a new QB coach and D Cordinator to avoid eating the crazy buyout?

If they do decide to go in a new direction, the ND guy seems like a great choice.

Recycling the same failed "big name" guys is not smart and high profile coordinators haven't worked out well for many teams either.

It'll be interesting to see how our turnover situation is affected by the absence of Taylor Martinez. Unfortunately his heir apparent, Tommy Armstrong, had eight turnovers in a two-game span recently, so maybe we're just trading one problem child for another. Johnny Stanton is a redshirt this year and by all accounts he's a true dual-threat QB, whereas Martinez was always a runner with middling passing ability, and Armstrong is a pure Option QB with middling passing ability as well.

Regarding Bo, I'm not surprised that he's staying. Likely it involves the buyout, lack of interest from target candidates, and/or endorsements from boosters, one of whom has his name on one of our practice buildings. Bo's won 70% of his games, but the blowouts and lack of preparation are tough to swallow. I actually think our defense is showing signs of improvement. We certainly have some better athletes here, and I expect a huge jump in rankings from that unit next year. This is the most positive I've felt about the defense in years.
