Name, Image, & Likeness (NIL) at tOSU

I mentioned something like this somewhere in the tangle of arguments for and against NIL. Ohio State is absolutely going to tell kids Fuck NO more often than not about trying to get up front NIL money and I love it. Will we miss some sure fire players, likely, but if the coaches we hire are truly the one's we want and need in Columbus, the guys we do get will want to be here and they'll get coached up better than their peers. That sells itself.

Not to mention, we are going to absolutely get money going to these guys they just wont get it before they get here in the outlandish terms that we're hearing.

Well said. This is also where I am at

We can do without the prima donnas like Quinn Ewers who is here for a payday and a cup of coffee & then leaves before we can actually rely on him. Gimme a lunch pail leader like Lincoln Kienholz guiding this team with his actions and intangibles, not unlike how Justin Fields did a few years ago. Gimme the Ohio kids who will fight for that Block O down to their fingernails. Gimme the WR room we have right now with their selfless attitude, where they are developing for that next level at an elite level and earning big NIL dollars in Columbus in the meantime. Gimme the kids that have that drive. Those are the guys that are going to win in this new age of college football

I don't think the 1-year Ewers experiment and Texas A&M's failure were coincidences. They didn't have that drive. Those teams down south can fight over all of those un-driven "cup of coffee" guys they want as far as I'm concerned

I don't understand the POV that the NCAA has "ruined" anything by finally allowing student-athletes to benefit financially from their celebrity and performance.

Sorry, but I can't agree.

Agreed.

If you look back at the NCAA making hundreds of millions off the kids who bore the physical price as the “good old days”/ when the sport was pure etc etc etc

I don’t even know what to say but you aren’t going to want to hear a word of it.

There are numerous reasons I can't stand the Yankees and Dodgers... a key one is that they can spend more than every other team in MLB
There are no level playing fields in NIL... it will bring out the worst of the worst... maybe team caps is a solution but this wild wild west is like cartel world..
Good thing the Ivy Leagues don't give a shit about football cuz their ability to fund NIL would kick the shit out of the Texas oil baron money and Phil Knight

And if you're gonna be consistent... extend it down to high school... hell, take it into gradeschool...
Wouldn't it be great to watch your son's team get smoked by 50 by the team that paid best 5th grade QB & RB in town to play on a star team?
That'd be an interesting talk you can have explaining it to your son. You know.. fairness, competitiveness, playing with heart and effort giving way to new life priorities to teach your kid - money talks

PS To clarify... I don't give two shits about "NCAA", per se... This is really starting to ruin COLLEGE FOOTBALL for me...

The problem is they still aren’t sharing money.
The athletes get non of the 100 milly tv deal, no ticket or merch revenue.
They are supposed to go out and create their own revenue streams.
But AD’s like Jeans are actively playing defense against that. They don’t want potential revenue to prop up their bloated departments going elsewhere.

My biggest issue is that high profile recruits make more than the guys who have been busting their ass for years.

A lineman who has been filling in spot situations, working hard and waiting for his time to start is getting brushed aside for the 5* WR who wants to start immediately and is demanding a signing bonus.

There should be a cap based on years of service.

Yes, B1G receives $1B in TV rev for football... and it doesn't go DIRECTLY to the players...
but who pays the tab for Women's basketball, both soccer programs, lacrosse, volleyball, both tennis, baseball/softball, both hockey, field hockey, cross country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, both track, wrestling, swimming. the BDBITL
Not like the $1B share goes into a pot of gold for the administration bonuses

At face value it may seem the colleges are raking in gazillions due to the football gods on the field... but take those funds away and all you have left is football and men's basketball which may be self sufficient... everything else goes away...

Do I think NIL has benefits.. yep.. but the drain is circling

Agree as well. I have no idea which players are getting NIL money, how much, and from where, so I don't see how any of that ruins anything.

What's ruined? Losing some recruits? Players transferring? The possibility that Ohio State turns back into the 8-9 win program it was in the 80s?

A 20 year old can go get a job, leave that job for one that pays more, or relocate, in any other industry. But if he plays college football he shouldn't have that freedom?

Under the old rules tOSU profited by the “southern way” brought to OSU by Urban. We are in a new Era we need to change .. change is not bad.I remember when Urban was hired some people didn’t want him or the SEC mentality at TOSU. When that way basically turned the Big 10 to our playground. People bought in here and the band wagon filled up fast.

That lineman can still get all types of deals though(I.e. apparel, food, cars, merchandise, etc). And I’m sure he’d be very happy with those deals and knows his place and that he wouldn’t earn the same as that 5star WR. Sorry but a guy like Jakob James would be happy with free pizza or burritos, and fully understands that Brandon Inniss will command the bigger deals. No different than Treveyon Henderson getting a brand car leased and in a commercial, while Tyler Friday is getting a deal from small local apparel company

The scenario you described seems unfair because it's new to college football. But in any other industry it's not unusual at all. Stars get paid. They can make demands. The loyal plugger is appreciated, but linemen don't sell tickets. Stars sell tickets, be it in Hollywood or college football.

Exactly..... that's why it isn't getting regulated.....bc everybody is making $$$ so as long as it's not interfering w/ the University bottom lines nobody is going to step in or even attempt to change what's going on with NIL.

That's also why you see 25 kids from a team enter the transfer portal in one year. Everyone wants or is searching for a bigger piece of the pie. I just keep going back to how this is ultimately going to affect the locker room atmosphere at some of these big-time NFL player producing schools in the next few years.

I think even a year or so ago, this was conversation taking place amongst coaches and/or athletic folks where I am at. The locker room…how can one measure the effects of NIL when it comes to the locker room? Equally, with this amount of money being circulated how does it influence teenage behavior? It still boggles my mind the amount of money as a society we are willing to pay out for a game.
