Name, Image, & Likeness (NIL) at tOSU

I think even a year or so ago, this was conversation taking place amongst coaches and/or athletic folks where I am at. The locker room…how can one measure the effects of NIL when it comes to the locker room? Equally, with this amount of money being circulated how does it influence teenage behavior? It still boggles my mind the amount of money as a society we are willing to pay out for a game.

It's entertainment. If these were social media influencers or musicians no one would bat an eye at it.

The team chemistry dynamics and this kind of money (in some cases) for teenagers who often don't have strong support groups is going to be interesting as hell.

Zac Wilson lost his locker room full of mature men that knew he made a dumb mistake. A college locker room full of young people with their first big $$. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. For example Henderson gets the money but Williams is more productive. Or WRs growing tired of the “brotherhood” . JSN IS last years news , MH I’m the man.

Yep.

Far and away the hardest part of all this but it isn't going away so they need to find a way to make it work. In some ways, I think Day is uniquely positioned to handle this part really well.

I’d say that’s his strength..if he can get McCord looking like Haskin/Fields/Stroud in their first year of starting ..that would be impressive. Many of the National media are out on Day or never in. Is it a loyalty to Urban and Day starting on 3rd base? if McCord performs like Days other QBs, tOSU will be undefeated going to AA.

I very much respect the idea of not making monetary promises to kids who have never set foot on a college football field — let alone excelled once on the field.

NGL, at this point, this is very much like the arms race between the US and Russia during the Cold War. We more or less won the Cold War because we were able to outspend Russia. Plenty of arms that were developed / invested in during the Cold War were retired without ever being used. Bad investment? I’d offer that it wasn’t. It helped achieve the ultimate goals.

At this point I’d consider making the top bets in the locker room whole with NIL immediately and then start spending like a sailor on shore leave in the South Pacific… I get it, the issues in the locker room and all, right? That’s why I think it’s important to take care of the kids there first and then go h*ll bent for leather to start buying the kids who ‘fit the program.’ Note, I’m making a huge distinction in just buying talent like aTm and getting the kids you WANT. In order to get all the kids you WANT, they are going to have to pony up to get ink on signing day.

There may be kids who don’t pan out who take some money off the table without ever being All Americans, but just like a warhead somewhere in the Dakotas that never saw the light of day, it’s just what needed to be done.

Sadly, this is just the price of entry in this new world.

One major NIL issue is where does all that money come from. Many major NIL contributors are very likely to want to have some type of influence/control in the football department's decisions in return for their contributions.

Ryan Day: Ohio State needs $13 million through name, image and likeness deals to maintain its football roster beyond next season.

I'm not sure that Ohio State (or most other schools too) can find enough NIL contributors to keep the NIL pipeline full (at the monetary amount Day thinks is necessary) who don't want and/or demand some influence/control over the football program, etc.

There were rumors at Texas this past season that a NIL contributor(s) forced Steve Sarkisian to start Quinn Ewers over Hudson Card. Most people believed that these rumors were true. How do you handle/control/eliminate theses situations?

The SEC seems to have gotten a pretty good grip on it over these past few decades. Start there and figure something out.

Before they ask themselves "how" though, I think OSU needs to ask themselves "if". If you want to have enough NIL money to compete at the very top then you are going to have to be ready to live with some tradeoffs. The NIL people aren't going to just give over millions without gaining some say in things. Decisions are always about a series of trade offs, not absolutes.

If those trade offs are unacceptable then fine but you aren't going to be able to compete at the same level as you have grown accustomed to because you won't be competing for the same level of athlete.

The degree of those decision based trade offs is what no one knows right now but they don't have a lot of time to wait around. Many schools have already made their decisions and are out there executing.

One of you entrepreneurs needs to start a NIL consulting practice... but don't hire Cardale... he's not very good
You'll need to add "showers in snake oil" as a hiring requirement

The idea of an NFT related to the player was a very interesting concept. I’ve been noodling on that idea for a while, sadly it’s easily replicated and therefore non-differentiating. I wish that I had the legal background that is likely required to pull this off. It would be a very interesting second career.

I don't like the suggestion that it's "wrong" for NIL money to influence a kid's decision. People change jobs for more money all the time.

I'm not sure that's what he's trying to say. I think he is saying people that are only going after the highest bidder is not the right recruit for Ohio State.

I'd say that's true for a lot of teams. It doesn't mean money isn't a factor it just means it shouldn't be the only factor.

I went for the money early in my career, but as time went on I realized there was more to a job than money. Not saying a 17-18 year old athlete is going to see that. However, I think Day is referring to all of the intangibles of being a Buckeye and what comes with it.

True I love my coworkers. 10k wouldn't cause me to leave them 20k probably would doubling my salary certainly would. But I have a former coworker who doubled his salary and hates his new job. If we could pay anything near what he was paid now he'd come back in a heartbeat.
