Nebraska has now created their own NIL donor driven collective…

https://www.on3.com/news/on3-guide-to-nil-collectives-around-the-nation/

Here’s a current list of the NIL donor driven collectives around the country. There might be something to these things

A lot of these seem to be set up as a means of allowing the creepiest, jock-sniffing elements of the fanbases to "access" the athletes. Like I said though, it's too late to put the toothpaste back in the tube for the time being.

And after the athletes get their "fees" and the administrators and board members get their salaries and a nice chunk is taken off for fancy offices and "administrative overhead." I'm guessing that not even a third of the money might actually find its way to any charities. Charity Navigator says that, for a well run non-profit, 90% of its money should go to the actual charity purpose (remember that's technically NOT the athletes here). They say that a charity that spends more than 35% on salaries (and that includes the athletes here) and overhead is failing at its mission. Anything over 65%, and it's arguably fraudulent. I'll say it again. The athletes are NOT the charity the way these things are being set up. They are contractors being paid a fee to support the supposed charitable purpose.

JT Barret and Urban Meyer need this for access to athletes? Prominent Columbus business people need this for access to athletes? Sounds like a good boogeyman on the surface but it just doesn't hold up when you actually think about it.

The athletes were never intended to be the charity. Where are you getting that idea from? Also why do you put air quotes around fees for the athletes? That is exactly what they are getting. A fee for the use of the NIL. It's about as straightforward a business transaction as you can get.

Concerning the possibility of fiduciary malfeasance; before we break out the pitchforks and torches, based on pure speculation, why don't we wait and see what reality is when they show their numbers? The board of directors is full of highly successful and reputable local business people. I'm going to trust them until they show there is a reason they shouldn't be trusted. They have zero incentive to tarnish their own reputations or let OSU get an indirect black eye from this turning into the kind of melodramatic carnival of debauchery you seem convinced it will become. It's almost like that's why they are there.

There were people who swore up and down that rock and roll was the devil and would ruin a generation, turns out it was just a new kind of music.

I'm glad to see the people actually trusted to make decisions aren't unshakable fans of Lawrence Welk.

No, but all the jock sniffers who sign up for 100 dollar a month plans do. I'll wait and see, but right now, there are tons of red flags about these operations. Maybe it'll turn out for the best with ours, but I'm guessing more than a few of these things end up on Sportscenter and in the courts.

Jock sniffers have always been involved in CFB. Now you're worried about their presence?
I'd rather them all contribute to funds then just give kids McDonalds or duffel bags. You can wag your fist all you want, but the boards of these foundations aren't servers at your local Applebee's or stockers at Kroger. It's been argued for decades that players should be able to earn some type of compensation, and now we have one and the first reaction is for complaints. I hope you have the same negative issues when we're hoisting up trophies

I'm sure there will be some abuses somewhere but that's always part of change. Overall I think these things are fine because the only people donating know it's going to the players, the players make more money and some amount of charity will probably get done that wasn't there before (a park gets cleaned, sick kids visited in a hospital etc). I don't see the $100 donor types getting access to the players but I'm sure someone somewhere will find a way to be a fuckhead about it. Obviously I don't have as much reservation about it as you do but I could be dead wrong. Who knows?

I very much like the way OSU is going about doing it. Putting responsible adults in charge from the jump but not conceding it to the Texas A&M's of the world.

See that’s where you may be mistaken. For example, from the list and description of NIL programs (link above) here’s just one description
Florida (Gator Collective)

Founders: Former Florida baseball player Eddie Rojas and wife Kelli Rojas
The buzz: The collective strives to provide fans with access to, and experiences with, athletes. Fans commit to a monthly pledge, starting at $5.99 per month. Fans receive autographs, interviews, social media content, appearances and other fan engagement opportunities.

Ok, I guess I had in person/private/VIP kind of stuff in my head from what they were saying they were scared of.

The UF access stuff makes sense, it's like selling recruiting insider subscriptions in a way but yeah, I can see where that could also get a little icky pretty quick.
