Mirror Lake Jump (official thread)

School spirit trumps Mirror Lake's cold, dirty water
Wednesday, November 24, 2010

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Most fans are happy with logo-bearing hats and sweaters.

Some go for foam fingers. Normally, the more hard-core types settle for face paint and lots of screaming.

But not in Columbus - not for the Michigan game. Here, fans go swimming.

In a lake. At night. In November.

Braving the cold and wet, thousands turned out late last night to make the 20th annual plunge into Mirror Lake on the Ohio State University campus.

Why? School spirit, along with a bit of mob-think and ample amounts of alcohol.

"Around this time of year, it's all you hear about," said Robby Moreland, a freshman from Danville. Moreland didn't wait until the supposed midnight time to jump, instead taking his first campus plunge about 9:30 p.m.

"It's about five times colder than you can imagine,"

What a night. Easily the most fun Mirror Lake since I've been a student. Giant, "we don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan" chant was earth shattering. It drowned out the sounds of those brave enough to jump in that holy sewage water.

Great night, we're ready for Saturday now.

Thank you to whoever finally corrected the thread title

Hope everyone had fun jumping in. You guys are lucky that the weather wasn't too cold. It seemed like every year I went it was frozen.

How I miss college :(
It's called growing old man... I miss it too! :wink2:

Welcome to the Mirror Lake Swim Team Urban.

Damn dude...you have accomplished so much in such a short amount of time. Turned programs around, watched one of your kids hoist the Heisman, put not one...but TWO crystal footballs in the trophy case.

Now you are already 11 wins deep into your tenure at OSU. You are batting 1000%...yet oddly...it has only just begun.

Reasonable or not, logic be damned..forget reason: when you become the head coach at OSU your success barometer will be forever linked to THE GAME. Win some conference titles? Sweet..but we expect that around here. Win a national title...become a legend. Beat Michigan...and you are the mayor of the Buckeye universe.

Here it comes.....round one. Let's light the torches and slay the skunk bears in epic fashion. I mean run it up... this is your first hurrah and this team's last shot at greatness. No bowl game? Fine... then no hostages. Line 'em up...win 'em all...go for two.. and leave no doubt. Bust this open and put your name in the Valhalla of Buckeye nation.

Pay it forward..and these kids have some debts they didn't create that need to be settled. Let's even the slate in blow out fashion.

It is M*ch*gan week and you are now the captain of the Mirror Lake Swim Team. Some of us hit the water years ago..some will do it this week for the first time..some are years away from their first plunge..but we are all ready to celebrate the next great mayor of The Ohio State University as you beat the hell out of that school up north!

:oh:

I think I am going to be starting a new tradition at my new house for the new regime in Columbus. Since my pool is not heated, and is sitting around 65 degrees now, I will be doing my own version of the Mirror Lake Jump on Friday night, and will try to get my son to join me (although I think he may just watch his dad get stupid for a minute).

I don't think I have been this pumped for The Game in a while.

Even though I am an alum now, I will be in Columbus on Thursday and thinking that there might be room for an old man. I looked forward to Mirror Lake Jump more than just about anything in my stint at OSU.

You would have to throw some s*it in your pool so that it would have the Mirror Lake feel:wink:
