Mirror Lake Jump (official thread)

As that crossing was an invasion into New Jersey, you have to wonder if they did that to pay tribute to the B1G's recent raid on that state.

Pure genius if it was. I lol'd. Is there a crossing of the deleware BIG meme yet?

I made one. That makes no sense.

Eeeewww. Not jumping into Mirror Lake in November -- that's pretty gross, and very cold, but it's a rite of passage -- but wristbands for sanctioned ("oh no not sanctioned it's just about safety") admission to The Jump at Mirror Lake sponsored by The Ohio State University and Coca-Cola? This is supposed to be a transgressive and uninhibited celebration, not just another in the long line of pre-packaged "college experiences".

Fences, wristbands to restrict Ohio State Mirror Lake jumpers

OSU students jump into Mirror Lake in 2011 as part of a Beat Michigan week tradition. This year’s jump is scheduled to take place Nov. 26.

Ohio State students will likely suit up for the Mirror Lake jump as they do every year: a variety of swim trunks, T-shirts, duct-taped flip flops and body paint.
But this year all students attending in any capacity will have to sport the same accessory – a red wristband. And instead of running to the lake from any and all directions, students will have to file in through one opening in a wall of chain-link fences.

I believe it was 1987 (undergrad years were a blur), Thursday before scUM game, several of my friends and I were passing by Mirror Lake and yes, we were quite inebriated. Don't remember the exact time, it was late. My one friend decided to jump into Mirror Lake. Eventually, all of us jumped in. We got a few folks passing by to join us by simply screaming, "Fuck Michigan!". I remember we won that game. So next year, we had to do the same thing. Despite the "official" story that the Mirror Lake jump began in 1990, I still say that my drunk friends and myself were the first to do it (and repeat the following year).

As a result, while I understand where the university is coming from in today's sue-happy society, I would hope that there are some students planning on jumping earlier this week. Take control of the tradition, do not let it be "controlled" by the power structure, keep it a purely "student thing". I know if I were a student there today, I would be organizing a jump earlier than what the university has "scheduled" and with the power of social media today....

^Agreed. The impromptu Mirror Lake jump after taking down Bin Laden was almost purely a creature of twitter. Interesting though, I thought the jump began much later than that. Never really checked into it I suppose.

I'm surprised they aren't trying to monetize it by charging an admission fee :shake:

For a long time I know the university was trying hard to appear to endorse the event in any way. I know they were concerned about even having paramedics there in case someone was injured because it would appear to be sponsoring the jump. While the students love it, I know the administration hates it...puts them in a tricky spot for sure.
