Mid-Majors and Their Crazy Antics

figure some of y'all may get a kick out of this shit.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette (or USL as I call them) still think they're bigger than they are.

they had the Sun Belt send a letter to ESPN stating that the Sun Belt doesn't control what ESPN calls the teams that play on their network.

USL is apparently pissed that ESPN continues to refer to them as either UL-L, Louisiana-Lafayette, or just Lafayette.

included in the letter was this gem of a paragraph:

There is confusion among the national sports organizations as how to refer to the Ragin’ Cajuns. Our official name is the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, but much like our opponents around the country, we simply go by Louisiana when referring to our athletic programs. It is the same situation as the Universities of Texas (at Austin), Tennessee (at Knoxville) and California (at Berkeley), but years of use and understanding by the sports media has led to each of those schools to have their athletic monikers being simplified and accepted nationally

how often do you think Texas has to remind ESPN to not use the phrase "at Austin"?

best part of this whole thing?
it's against Louisiana Law for the to refer to themselves WITHOUT to "at Lafayette"

“The use of the University of Louisiana abbreviation ‘UL’ and/or the phrase ‘U of L’ are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations (alumni associations, development foundations, bookstores, etc.),” the law states. For academic, public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the municipal location of the institution. For example ULR is appropriate for University of Louisiana at Rayne.”

UL-M ain't real happy with USL pulling this shyt either.

If memory serves, Ohio University filed a lawsuit over trademark disputes which led to tOSU placing THE in front of the word Ohio.

UL-L finally takes exception to that, but has never seen a reason to write an angry letter directed at The Mothership for lumping the two together as "UL-U Pickem" in their Bottom 10 rankings for at least the past 15 years straight?

Do they have meetings where these ideas pop up and the most desperate university administrations pick up on them?

The State University of NEW YORK! at Buffalo is trying this rebranding strategy as well (which I know was already discussed when we played them earlier this year).

At least they haven't written a letter to ESPN yet.

reminds me of the last time we played Miami(Oh). I went over to their message boards and purposefully referred to them as Miami(Oh) instead of just Miami. I probably called them that more times than Matt Millen says Tess during a broadcast.....just littered every sentence with it. They can't stand that shit

Yeah, Fredo's obsession with trying to make everyone think that they're a private university. They hate to be reminded that their little boarding school is just another Fredo.

I can't find the original, but this mongoloid literally has a sign that he holds up to the press box ordering the broadcasters not to refer to them by their proper "of Ohio" name. It's good to see that they make sure Mongo is wearing his helmet when he gets out of his cage. Safety first!

Actually, it was a suit so that people would not call us Ohio, which, to my knowledge, nobod actually did. Suprised they haven't sued Brady Hoke yet. Of course, to them, we are Ohio A&M.

Actually, we formally filed the lawsuit. We had no desire to do so, but Beavis Fredo sent us a cease and desist letter to demanding that we stop using "Ohio" in any form up to and including the historical track uniforms and Ohio Stadium. We had no choice but to respond legally to settle the issue.

As for the THE, the recent emphasis started under Ed Jennings during the dark days of the Fredo rebellion. With Jim Rhodes still in office and his loyal car dealers still dominating the board of trustees, there was little we could do to openly undermine them. One thing was to start emphasizing the THE as a subtle message that we still were the state's flagship university despite the policies of the current Governor.

Fredo treachery knows no bounds and will rear its ugly head the minute we take our hobnailed boot off their throats. One only needs to listen to the comments of that clown Prez at Beavis Fredo McDowell or the new head juggalo to get a sense that they'd pull this shit again in a heartbeat the minute that they thought the political landscape was ripe.

Every time I see those ridiculous little signs at CMH advertising "Ohio's public Ivy," I LOL.

Miami, you have a halfway decent public university. No more than that. Get the pumpkin over yourself.
