Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

Well it has taken me most of the week to recover from the weekend. Threw a amazing tailgate if I do say so myself. Clearly the highlight of the day for Spartan fans.
Not really much to say. What is kind of funny is that my buddies and I felt pretty good about things and it was 35-13 at half. Which is to say at least it appears that OSU was not able to just manhandle MSU at the line of scrimmage and had to actually throw some forward passes. I kind of felt like OSU was showing mercy by trying to just win without throwing many passes because if they threw the ball it would be unchallenging.....which clearly MSU has made a decision to see if offenses know about the forward pass. Like literally I question if the coaches are aware that the forward pass is quite popular now in the game. Like it is no longer 1972.
Anyway, I was not overly impressed with OSU. This is 100% because MSU is a dumpster fire right now. So it is hard to even discern if OSU is any good when MSU is so damn bad in all phases except the punter. MSU seems to be a punting mecca. I will say that the win over ND is starting to look better and better. ND is showing some life.

Is it really that hard to discern if OSU is any good?

I'm starting to think he may be a troll...
He's been around long enough he's not a troll. He was just trying to emphasize how bad he thinks Sparty is at the moment, and that was the best way to do it. If you read all of his posts he does realize this Buckeye team is pretty good.

Sorry I kind of knew my comment about OSU might ruffle feathers LOL. I do think OSU is really good this year. The defense has leveled up so they can now get the stops needed to win the big games.
I am looking forward to the end of the year game. OSU will hopefully put a beating down on the skunk bears.
As for MSU. As long as he can keep the recruiting class together I am fine. At some point they had to decide to retool and go for higher end talent. The current situation is rough but it should show most that K9 was a monster and that if MSU does not get some real talent in the trenches they will never measure up.
BTW I have not watched a single down of the skunks. Is PSU that bad or are the assholes that good?

Some notes on the time it takes to turn around a program. I am not sure about Tenn. But for instance Texas has a roster of 4-5 star athletes. They never have a roster of 2-3 star guys like MSU has consistently had for decades. And when MSU rises up it is because they get some 4 star guys and then "coach up" a bunch of 2-3 star guys. This is not a sustainable program for success. It becomes an absolute grind and if you miss one cycle or 2 it spells doom.
I am guessing that Tenn was not a roster of 2-3 star guys that have just been coached up. It was a roster of higher ranked players that on year 2 have turned it around.
Tucker is trying to turn around a roster and create a team of 4 star guys and higher that will push each other internally to get better and thrive. I do not think you are talking apples and oranges when discussing the coaches needed to handle the "coach up roster" and the "push competition" of higher level talent rosters. At least this is what I am telling myself so I can sleep at night. I do 100% believe that it takes a different approach to coach the 4-5 star players. They have a different attitude and come in with different expectations.

I also think a difference in MSU and Texas/Tenn, is the fanbase and administration's expectations of the HC and reality of where the program exists. MSU has never seen themselves as an elite team, even when they won conference titles and made NY6 bowl games. They have embraced the under dog mentality, and carry themselves in a humble manner. Texas has had similar success to MSU, but expects to be the preeminent program in CFB, though they have 1 NC in decades, and squandered countless 5star talent. Tennessee is still living off of the Peyton Manning lore(though he never won an NC, or even a conference title if I can recall) and also expects to be mentioned among the best in CFB. The Texas and Tennessee jobs will always pay well but be tough to fill because of the unrealistic expectations. The minute Tennessee goes back to losing 4-5 games a year, the shine and adulation for Heupel will go out of the window. MSU will have no problem keeping Tucker around and allowing him to build something, the same way Dantonio did, and if he can get some wins against scUM, then even better.
