Michigan State Spartans (official thread)

MSU's #1 decommit would outrank all but one UM verbal.
MSU's #2decommit is equal to their #2/3 guy (163/172 overall).

I wouldn't want to hold an early recruiting celebration either. The M class is #24, between TCU and Cincy in the team rankings. A few spots and points ahead of Northwestern.

Valenti is a shock jock literally. His early take on Tucker was if you are making 90M then you need to show me results not excuses. Then when it is going down the shitter he is like hey hey everyone we need to give this guy a chance.
I agree with Valenti in both cases. But the realty is we signed this guy to a big guaranteed contract. So MSU is forced to give him time to try to build it. I think most would say MSU is making a reach to get into the National tier. With Coach D they made it into a Regional Power game but never really became a National Power.
I am of the opinion that there is only so much room at the top. If you made all the coaching and facilities the same you would still only have 3-8 power house teams a year. It comes down to the players and the talent. And really the biggest issue is how kids can leave early. So you have fewer and fewer game changers staying in college. So it is a constant shuffle. I would argue that recruiting is much more important now because you only get a difference maker for 2-3 years max on the field. Instead of 3-4. Over time that makes a huge difference.

I would not suggest that their was any issue within the program. I follow them on another web site and they tend to discuss those things if they exist. And they have in the past.
I think you had a few things come together. MSU has been getting better and better on defense all season. And the only thing they have been able to do is stop the run. So a team like ILL is kind of a perfect fit for that defense. Additionally ILL had played no one to date. So they are just not very good IMO. And finally I think the loss to SCum and the chaos after helped focus the team up. Nothing like a good road game being out of town overnight to get the team focused and ready to play football.
MSU needed that game to have any hope of make a bowl. And you must get into bowl games to get those extra practices. This win also greatly helps recruiting as this helps solidify the culture concept. It speaks a lot to the coaches that they have kept the team together after last season and the early part of this season. MSU thought they had arrived then sucked and that is often the kiss of death for a team. Easy to mail it in on the coaches and team and ask why am I even doing this.......so a good sign.
MSU must bring it the next 2 weeks because needing a win in the Valley at Thanksgiving is not a high percentage play. PSU is typically a different team home or away. And seemingly much better at home.

Big Ten disciplines Michigan St., Michigan for tunnel incident

The Big Ten conference released a statement Monday outlining disciplinary measures for both Michigan and Michigan State stemming from the attack in the Michigan Stadium tunnel after the two teams played Oct. 29.

After the game, Michigan defensive backs Gemon Green and Ja'Den McBurrows were assaulted in the tunnel leading up to Michigan's locker room. Michigan State defensive back Khary Crump struck Green with his helmet and has since been charged with felonious assault by the Washtenaw County prosecutor's office.

Itayvion Brown, Angelo Grose, Justin White, Brandon Wright and Zion Young were all charged with aggravated assault, a misdemeanor, and Jacoby Windmon was charged with assault and battery for their participation in the fight.

The conference has fined Michigan State $100,000 and has suspended Crump for four games from the incident date, plus the first eight games of the 2023 season. The other six players charged, along with Malcolm Jones, had already served four-game suspensions and the conference accepted that as sufficient and completed.

The University of Michigan was also found by the conference to be at fault for not meeting the standards of the Big Ten's policy to provide adequate protection for personnel of both home and visiting teams when entering and leaving playing arenas.

Michigan was given a public reprimand for the policy failure.

Spartans players making deals in tunnel fracas vs. Wolverines

At least four more Michigan State football players facing misdemeanor charges for a skirmish inside the Michigan Stadium tunnel will likely have their cases dismissed in exchange for community service and other conditions, lawyers said Friday.

"It's going to happen outside of court," said Max Manoogian, an attorney for Angelo Grose. "There is going to be no criminal responsibility whatsoever. There are no admissions being made, no pleas being tendered."
.
.
.
"Participants work with a case manager to create and successfully complete a plan for accountability. Upon completion of that plan, charges are dismissed," said Victoria Burton-Harris, chief assistant prosecutor in Washtenaw County.

Manoogian predicted charges would be dismissed in six months.

"They're going to do some good work in the community, do a little bit of philanthropic work, jump through a couple of hoops and the prosecutor's going to dismiss the case on their own," he said.

I wish we could just jump ahead 2-3 years and see where the program landed. Feel pretty confident that the focus on recruiting and talent is starting to truly improve the overall team. I suspect next season (2023) will still be a bit rough as the lines are still thin in talent and numbers. And QB play has to improve. Definitely have the young talent at QB in the club house but if they can not beat out Thorne then how good can they actually be. Potential is nice but it is much nicer to actually be good verses "potential" to be good.

And I see OSU has loaded it up again. The question is if Day survives another loss to SCum. I feel like a 3rd loss in a row and his days will be numbered. Imagine 11-1 and missing the B10 playoffs again. Once playoffs expand I like OSU chances of making it pretty much every season.

Michigan State football dismisses Itayvion Brown after gun-related charges

Defensive end Itayvion Brown is no longer a member of the Michigan State football program after it was revealed the Spartans defender faces gun charges, according to MLive.com and WLSN-TV in Lansing, Michigan. Brown was arraigned Friday morning during a virtual hearing in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court on counts of felony carrying a concealed weapon and misdemeanor firearms possession while under the influence. The charges stem from an alleged March 17 incident.

“Itayvion Brown was dismissed from the Michigan State football team last month and did not participate in spring practice,” a program spokesman said in a written statement to WLNS-TV. “Previously, he had been indefinitely suspended from team activities beginning in late February.”

Brown's legal troubles are the second instance of such in a span of roughly six months.

Brown was among the group of Michigan State football player charged with assault in the postgame tunnel incident that occurred at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor following Michigan's Oct. 29 victory against the Spartans. Brown and the others charged were suspended for the remainder of the 2022 season.

It is interesting when you see this stuff to me. On one hand you think the coach and school is handling this in a 100% proper fashion. But on the other hand he was not projected to be starter or major contributor. And I wonder if this would have been handled differently if he was a returning starter and a 1st team B10 guy. This is not just at MSU but at every school and program. I know the MSU fan base is all frothy about how Mazi at SCum was handled in a much different fashion.
I am often torn. I am a believer in 2nd chances. But I also think you need to have a clear 1 and done set of offenses.

You guys should come on over and see the chaos.....LOL.
All season everyone bitched about how Thorne should have been benched and then he says he is going to leave and everyone are losing their collective minds.
It reminds me of some guy bitching about how he is going to break up with his girl friend. And then she breaks up with him first and he is crying in his beer.
Thorne leaving or not leaving is a non issue. I hope he leaves so MSU can try something different. Now Coleman is a monster and him leaving is going to hurt. He has 1st round size and speed. Maybe not a Harrison Jr level but better than Reed who went in the second round.

Didn't expect this at midnight on a Friday.

Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker is the subject of an ongoing university sexual harassment investigation, multiple sources with knowledge of the pending case confirmed to ESPN.

The sources did not confirm the complainant's identity or details about the allegations Saturday night. Sources said the investigation started months ago and remains open.

ESPN filed a public records request with Michigan State on July 30, seeking documents related to any complaints alleging that Tucker violated the university's relationship violence and sexual misconduct policy.

The school's interim president refused the request, citing a passage in state law that exempts information that "would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of an individual's privacy."
ESPN believes the denial is a violation of state open records law and has engaged a Michigan-based law firm to pursue potential litigation.
