Malik McDowell (DL Cleveland Browns)

MSU ote="maximumblitz, post: 2453359, member: 14565"]This is show of weakness. A tiny chink in the armor. So if the business does NOT get done, then what? The MSU defensive line coach is gone? The introduces questions and uncertainty.[/quote]
Wow, that's odd, they have been making good with scraps for years, now they all of the sudden keep the best in their backyard? Please.....

Free, long background story. Insights into what his Dad is looking for and the downsides of being highly recruited:

But for all the platitudes about size, skill and ability, Greg is not worried about football, because he feels Malik will succeed anywhere on the field. He’s looking for the best academic and social fit for his son.

He wanted to focus, to hear something different, but he had spoken to many of these schools — these coaches — over and over again.

“We need you”… “You’ll be able to play”… “We can turn you into a first-round pick”… “The first pick in the (NFL) draft.”

The last one just seems too much, considering only three defensive linemen have been the NFL’s No. 1 pick since 1994. But that’s the pitch McDowell liked hearing the most, believing it’s possible.

Not sure you want to be a #1 overall pick as a DL player. The only one who had any sort of success was HoFer Bruce Smith. Other than him, everyone has been a flaming bust or journeyman type players.

Saying you don't want to be the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft is as dumb as saying you don't want to win the lottery because of the taxes and problems that come along with having a lot of money.

Eh, Mario Williams has had quite a successful career, especially given the alternatives that year of Reggie Bush, Vince Young, or Matt Leinart.

Not to mention, DE's were more commonly going #1 in the 70's era with guys like Lee Roy Selmon and Ed 'Too Tall' Jones. I don't think there's anything to the #1 DL 'risk'.

Not back on topic; I'm hoping the awkward situation between scUM and MSU helps us out in the end. But we close like no other and I'm excited to see how this one turns out.
