Carr doesn't address his future
End of his tenure at Michigan may be near; news conference set Monday

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? Today did not mark the end of Lloyd Carr's tenure at Michigan, but there are indications that it might come soon after the Wolverines suffered their fourth straight loss to Ohio State.
"I really wanted to (see Carr win)," Michigan athletic director Bill Martin said after the Wolverines' 14-3 loss. "He really had the Ohio State jinx on him here. Particularly, these seniors not having won one game against Ohio State is significant."
Martin was cordial and upbeat as he answered questions about Carr's future, but he seemed resigned to the fact that Ohio State has supplanted Michigan as the top program in the Big Ten.
"(Ohio State) was the better team today," Martin said. "There was no question about it."

Carr stays mum on retirement

November 18, 2007
BY JIM O'DONNELL [email protected]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Lloyd Carr may be bound for ''Poker After Dark Defeat.''
Moments after his Wolverines closed an 8-4 regular season with a 14-3 loss to Ohio State, the Michigan coach declined to tip his hand on whether he will retire.
''There will be a day to discuss that, and this isn't it,'' Carr told a hushed media room at Crisler Arena on Saturday.
Carr is scheduled to have his usual Monday news conference.
Asked if the loss to the Buckeyes -- his fourth straight and sixth in the last seven years -- would influence his decision, Carr responded: ''No.''
Despite a veteran-laden team that was expected to compete for a national championship, the 2007 Wolverines staggered out of the gate with losses to Appalachian State (34-32) and Oregon (39-7) and stumbled home with consecutive defeats by Wisconsin (37-21) and Ohio State.

Carr expected to announce retirement on Monday

It appears that Michigan lost a little more than just the game against Ohio State.
ESPN has learned that Michigan coach Lloyd Carr will hold a 10 a.m. press conference on Monday at which time he is expected to announce his retirement

The interesting part:

LSU coach Les Miles seems to be at the top of the list because he played for the late Bo Schembechler at Michigan. That is where Miles met his wife, and he was an assistant there under Schembechler.
Even though Miles appears to be in a great situation leading the top-ranked Tigers in a talent-rich area of the country, the school seemed concerned enough about him bolting for Ann Arbor that it put a specific clause in his contract to make it an expensive move.
In the "termination by coach" section of his deal, Michigan is the only other school mentioned. It states that Miles will not seek or accept employment as Michigan's coach. If Miles does leave LSU to coach the Wolverines, he must pay LSU $1.25 million.

Like that really makes a difference...If Miles gets hired at Michigan, I doubt he'd really be surprised to see an extra $1.25 million magically appear in his bank account.
shit....Michigan can save some money and take up a collection in Columbus. I'm sure those people are as convinced as I am that Miles is a bumbling bafoon who is lucky to be in the situation he's currently in.

Agreed. I think the Michigan program would get only a slight boost from having an arrogant prick like Les Miles rather than a curmudgeon like Lloyd Carr.

EDIT: And by boost, I mean they probably wouldn't lose to Appy State.

now i know why those scUM frat kids were beating on those jalopies with such a release of anxiety!

thanks for the rides, Lloyd.

[edit]: wouldn't you know it, but just as i hit the submit button on this, Mark Knopfler comes on the radio singing "Punish the Monkey"... freaky!!!

They’re driving long nails into coffins
You’ve been having sleepless nights
You’ve gone as quiet as a church mouse
and checking on your rights
The boss has hung you out to dry
And it looks as though
they’ll punish the monkey
and let the organ grinder go

You’ve been talking to a lawyer
Are you going to to pretend
that you and your employer
are still the best of friends?
Somebody’s going to take the fall
There’s your quid pro quo
They’ll punish the monkey
and let the organ grinder go

Here comes a policeman
He won’t be sidetracked
He’s asking about a smoking gun
He’s after the facts

It’s a quiet life from here on in
You’ve dropped your poison cup
The telephone is ringing
But you’re not picking up
Time’s up, Sir Lord Flunkey
And everybody knows
they’ll punish the monkey
and let the organ grinder go

Players reaction

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Lloyd Carr walked into a team meeting Sunday only to be met with silence.

He exited the Schembechler Hall meeting room and entered again, this time receiving thunderous applause from his Michigan players, most of whom understood the announcement that was coming.

"He's not going to be here any longer," linebacker Chris Graham said, following the 20-minute meeting. "It's a sad thing to hear, but I enjoyed every moment of being here with him. He's a great coach to me, he's like another father figure. Just having him here is the whole reason I came."
The decision to leave, players believe, wasn't an easy one for the 62-year-old Carr.
"He loves this program to the death," wide receiver Adrian Arrington said. Graham described his teammates reaction as mixed, with some shocked at the news, while younger players didn't know how to digest what they had just heard.

"It was just strange," outside linebacker Shawn Crable said. "He didn't tear up or anything like that - it was just strange. It was just a weird meeting."

"He's been a leader," Crable said. "He's been the face of the program, he's taken a lot of heat in situations, he's had some great times in situations, but he's been the leader." Senior defensive tackle Will Johnson said he saw signs throughout the year that this would be Carr's last season, but that the coach never wanted his status to become a distraction.
"He's a great coach and a great man," Johnson said. "I'm going to miss him being around."

"He's up there," Mesko said. "He's done a lot of things and run one of the cleanest programs in the nation - he always ran everything with integrity and I respect that."
Senior safety Jamar Adams said he would have preferred to see Carr stay at Michigan, but he hopes his coach's future includes some relaxation. "I hope he goes and chills out somewhere and spends some of that money he's got," Adams said. "But I just want him to have as much fun as he can."
