Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

I disagree with the above bolded text. He is TALENTED, not skilled. He can leap in the air 40"+ in the air and throw the basketball through the rim very powerfully.

He is not what I would consider "skilled". Jordan was skilled. Tim Duncan is skilled. There are no subtle nuances to Lebron's game. His entire game is predicated around sheer athleticism. He runs fast, jumps high, and weighs a lot. I give him credit for his passing ability though.

He's the best I've ever seen at taking the ball to the basketball and finishing with either hand. He does have great vision and passing skills. And he is an excellent ball handler. His shooting leaves a lot to be desired.

uhm... Lets not forget he played baseball as well...

Touche. I'm probably selling Bo a little short because his career in both sports was short-lived and he was at his peak before I even hit puberty.

Jesse Owens commanding the respect of the Aryan newspapers may have been his second most notable achievement behind that day at Ferry Field with 4 world records. In an hour. While injured.

Lebron has a remarkable blend of characteristics, but if he's incapable of using those gifts under pressure, that's a pretty big knock on his athleticism.

He is first and foremost a basketball player, and he's very mediocre at shooting & leading when the chips are down.

A quarterback who can outrun, leap over and throw past any defender would not be lauded for those attributes if they broke down under pressure.

How about a golfer who can outdrive, hit better putts & irons than anyone in history, but always chokes down the stretch of majors? Would we hail his athleticism or talent? Or is that a major detractor when evaluating it?

It's a subjective argument. You can take into account whatever you want. I don't consider his mental weakness as a factor in discussing his physical gifts.

Agreed. The guy who sets a world record in the 100M (or 200M) in a qualifying heat but never wins gold is still the fastest man.

He won't be vindicated when/if he wins a championship. He's had too many instances of deferring when it really matters. He's the most chiseled specimen in the NBA. A guy that fast and strong should always be able to drive to the rim in a late game situation. He's either making it or getting fouled. His body control also lets him avoid the contact which can get a charge call. He can go to either side on a drive and use either hand. Yet, he's always looking to pass or set a pick. Anything to avoid having to take the shot. He's a pass first player? Bullshit! He's afraid to have a miss on his shoulders. He's done it too many times for it to be a coincidence. Spineless fucking jellyfish.

Yes, but typically those sprinters don't crumble in fear and stand still behind the pack during the finals, hoping their teammates win the race for their country :p

And to boot, that would for the new country they immigrated to after carpet-bombing their old country.

I have no problem admitting LeChoke is probably the most physically gifted basketball player I've ever seen. He can absolutely dominate a game like few before him. Problem is, it's almost never when the chips are down. I can think of two memorable instances of him being "clutch" in big game situations: absolutely taking over the game against detroit in 2007 (still one of the most amazing things I've seen), and hitting the game winning three vs. Orlando in game 2 back in 2009. That's twice in a 9 year career. There might have been others, but I can't think of them. 95% of the rest of the time, he's bricking shots, missing free throws, and playing hot potato. The guy is a mental weakling, and don't think last night won't haunt him the rest of their time in the playoffs.

His mental midgetry combined with his superior gifts are what will, ultimately, make him one of, if not the biggest disappointment in professional sports history. He's a born loser when it counts, always has been, always will be.

and to be honest I'd put Deion Sanders in that category as well...not to mention Jordan.....

Babe Fucking Ruth.

I'd like to see LeBron win a hot dog eating contest Monday afternoon, drink a barrel of beer on Monday evening, have a three way Monday night......and then come out and be fucking clutch on Tuesday!

Ray Ratto, whose columns suck in general, of course comes to LeBron's defense by blaming...the perception of the fans...waaahhhh....

So, it's the fans fault for noticing that he's a fucking gutless coward? Brilliant!

Yep, exactly how I pictured him:

I'm sorry, but I don't ever want to see a baseball player anywhere close to the list of all-time best athletes. At least when baseball is their only sport.

The Babe was a great hitter and a great baseball player, but he's not even in the top 100 greatest "athletes" of all time.

I strongly disagree. He dominated the sport unlike anybody else, and was also a great pitcher. I think some of his pitching records still stand.
