Lebron James (Los Angeles Lakers)

I was being somewhat facetious in mentioning Ruth, but there is an argument to be made that he is representative of the idea that being a great champion athlete is more than just one's physical gifts.

The Queen might very well be the best physical specimen to ever play basketball. To me, that just makes his failures as an athlete all the more damning.

I'm sorry, but I don't ever want to see a baseball player anywhere close to the list of all-time best athletes. At least when baseball is their only sport.

Your list wouldn't be worth a damn then. Not a single person on it would be capable of hitting a curveball.

Sprinting is for people who don't hit the ball far enough.

Well, it looks like Wade and James are deciding to be the biggest bitches possible.

That's what happens when you overlook a team with the 5th best record in the NBA (Indiana) and think you're going to roll over them, despite (in the last 2 games of the season series) needing a miracle shot to beat them in Miami, and getting beat by 15 in Indy.

The Pacers showed they have way more composure than the cHeat, that's huge for them.

I have no problem admitting LeChoke is probably the most physically gifted basketball player I've ever seen. He can absolutely dominate a game like few before him. Problem is, it's almost never when the chips are down. I can think of two memorable instances of him being "clutch" in big game situations: absolutely taking over the game against detroit in 2007 (still one of the most amazing things I've seen), and hitting the game winning three vs. Orlando in game 2 back in 2009. That's twice in a 9 year career. There might have been others, but I can't think of them. 95% of the rest of the time, he's bricking shots, missing free throws, and playing hot potato. The guy is a mental weakling, and don't think last night won't haunt him the rest of their time in the playoffs.

And that was arguably luck. He didn't have time to think, pass, or choke. He just threw it up there and it went it.

The fact most of us could beat Babe Ruth in a sprinting contest probably nullifies him as being on the list of great athletes......just sayin

Speed isn't the end-all, be-all factor of athleticism. But a great athlete should have above-average speed. And I'm pretty sure I could run backwards faster than the Babe.

the Babe was the best pitcher AND the best hitter. he was Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens COMBINED.

Maybe so.. but the Babe was a 20-game winning pitcher before becoming the home run king..

As far as baseball goes.. atheletes that come to mind:
Ty Cobb (my personal "greatest" ball player ever)
Willie Mays
Ken Griffey Jr

Those guys are all athletes and to throw out baseball all together is a joke. I also think that being clutch should have some bearing on the discussion.. Ty Cobb stole 800+ bases, 54 times stealing home.. batted over .400 3 times, lifetime average of .367 (in the dead ball era), and is second only to Pete Rose with hits.

To hit a baseball is incredibly challenging.. you go 3 for 10, you're in the hall of fame. You go 3 for 10 shooting or complete 30% of your passes - your ass is on the bench.

Jordan, IMHO, was the best athlete I've ever seen play (I'm young). Dude was the top little league player in the state before giving the game up, he was fast, strong, 48" vertical.. and had that competitive edge that brought his abilities into a different stratosphere than Lebron.

Jim Brown has to be considered more athletic than Lebron, as does Jordan & Thorpe. IMO. Ali too.

I'd throw in Mickey Mantle before he blew his knees out.

Anyone who saw Bo play doesn't have to be sold on his amazing physical talent but for the younger guys consider this;

Bo was an All Star at two different professional sports at the same time.

When anyone else pulls that one off in the modern era let me know.
