Shazier lunged and left his feet instead of dropping his shoulder and running through the tackle like Katzenmoyer.

It was bad form by Shazier no matter which way you slice it.

Exactly. When the defender simply grazes the other player and they bust it for a big gain everyone is up in arms. But they forget it is still bad form when they knock them off their feet and out of bounds.

Strong WILL: The results came right away after Ryan Shazier was plugged into the lineup late last season as a true freshman, and the Buckeyes linebacker has picked up right where he left off as a reliable tackling machine this season.

But even with a couple of Big Ten games under his belt a year ago and four non-conference starts to prove his breakout performances then were no fluke, none of those games might have offered quite the kind of test waiting for him at Michigan State this weekend.

And that might turn Meyer's debut in the league into something of a litmus test for his leading tackler against a traditional offense that will likely put more pressure on Shazier than he's previously had to deal with in his young career.

"It?s a much different game than he?s been asked to play," Meyer said. "We?ve faced a lot of the isolation teams, which means they?re trying to isolate you in space and throwing the bubble screens and quick screens and all that, so this will be a different type of ball game.

"Is he ready for this? He better be."

There really weren't any indications that Shazier couldn't handle his responsibilities on the weak side during Ohio State's perfect start through four games.

The style of offenses the Buckeyes faced might have changed his responsibilities at times and forced him to make more open-field plays, but he had few issues with that while racking up 40 tackles, good for third in the Big Ten. And while the Spartans might force him to play more often in traffic, Meyer clearly isn't anticipating that slowing down Shazier.

"This will be a great test for him," Meyer said. "Thinking back in his career, has he ever started a game where the [weak-side] linebacker, you know he?s going to be in the fray the entire time and you?re not going to be asked to be a space player?

"I have a lot of confidence in him obviously, because I think he?s a great kid and a great player."

Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier plays ?like a missile? at times, coach Urban Meyer has said. But today against Michigan State?s power game, featuring running back Le?Veon Bell, the Buckeyes instead will need Shazier to resemble a rugged border-patrol guard.

?It?s a much different game than he has been asked to play,? Meyer said. ?We?ve faced a lot of ?isolation? teams, which means they?re trying to isolate you in space, throwing the bubble screens, quick screens and all that. So this will be a different type of ballgame.?

I thought Shazier's best play last night came on the drive after our fake punt failed. It was 3rd and goal from about the 5 and Nebraska tried a throw back that Roby stayed home on. Anyway, Martinez was scrambling and look he was heading toward the endzone with a full head of steam. Shazier met him in the open field and wrapped him up for a HUGE tackle. They were forced to settle for 3 instead of going up by 14.

That was the turningpoint of the game right there. Holding them to a field goal on a short field seemed to energize the team and the crowd.

Shazier seemed to play a lot better today. Still doesn't wrap up enough, but he made some good stops and was flying around the field. If he can string a few of these games together he'll start to turn the corner.

He had 12 tackles and 1.5 TFL, as well as the big pass deflection for the INT. LINK

7, iirc. His first half was very impressive, imo. I thought he maybe had his most complete game as a Buckeye today, and the defense played well above my expectations for them coming into the game. Without the defense holding Purdue on to those two three and outs in the 4th, KG doesn't get the opportunity to do what he did.

Shazier to honor dead friend

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State sophomore linebacker Ryan Shazier had his best game as a Buckeye against Purdue on Saturday, according to coach Urban Meyer. Shazier led Ohio State with 12 tackles and now ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 33rd in the nation, averaging 9.5 tackles per game.
He'll be needed against Penn State, the team he had a career-high 15 tackles against a year ago.


Shazier should be around the ball, but OSU fans might take a moment to find him.


Shazier plans to wear No. 48 instead of his usual No. 10 on Saturday. He wrote on his Twitter account that he'll make the switch to honor his late friend Gary Curtis.


Curtis was the former team manager for Shazier's Plantation High School football team in Florida. Curtis suffered from muscular dystrophy and died in the spring.



An Ohio State spokesperson confirmed Shazier's plan to wear No. 48, though his No. 10 also will be available if needed. The usual No. 48 for the Buckeyes is walkon linebacker Joe Burger.
