LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

SHAZIER AIMS FOR IMPROVEMENT: When freshman Ryan Shazier averaged 10 tackles a game after moving into Ohio State?s lineup the last four games of the 2011 season, expectations were that he would have a huge season this fall.

So far, though he leads Ohio State with 14 tackles this season, he hasn?t had any big plays and has not gotten a sack or tackle for loss.

?I have to make the plays when they?re presented to me,? Shazier said earlier this week.

While his numbers have not caught up to last year?s totals yet, Shazier says it is a little easier to play as a veteran than as a first-year linebacker.

?It never leaves you but you?re a lot calmer the more the season goes and the more you play. Lately I haven?t been nervous but I can feel inside that it?s a big game. You?re at a big university, millions of people are watching. But experience starts to kick in and it helps out,? he said.

I'll have to rewatch, I thought at least one of the big misses was on Barnett.

First big run was the result of a poor tackle attempt by OJ Johnson about 5 yards into the carry, and a poor angle back Barnett.. However, Shazier could have stopped that play for a 8-10 yard gain, but he didn't wrap up the stumbling RB.. as a result, the kid broke down the sideline for another 70 yards..

Second big run, Shazier was confused pre-snap, was scrambling into position as the ball was snapped, then proceeded to overrun the play.. he was the first guy who could have made the play.. then Bryant comes flying in head down and totally whiffs

Well he had 13 tackles, 2 TFL, a FF and a sack, so stat-wise he looked very good. LINK

I do remember multiple plays though where he went for the big hit and didn't wrap the guy up, or got caught in traffic. He'll learn. He's gonna be a great player for OSU before he leaves.

EDIT: forgot that he had a forced fumble.

I don't care what the stat-line says, Shazier had a very poor game in my opinion. It's evident how talented the kid is but he needs to play CONSISTENT. Too many times he was beat on the edge, went for the big hit and whiffed, or just got his hands on someone, dropped to his knees, and they broke the "tackle" and went for big yards.

Hankins, Simon, and Roby are the only defenders who showed up today IMO.

I dont think he had a poor game, he had some poor plays here and there but his raw talent is undeniable. He is fast, strong as hell for his size, and comes at you with a badass attitude. That statline most likely wins him Big10 defensive player of the week (if Hankins doesnt get it)

He just needs to get back to fundamentals and not try to go for the kill shot every tackle.

When poor plays here and there lead to 14 points it's kind of a big deal. Not sure what you could see on TV but being at the game, he missed plays and was out of place a number of times. I remember in the first half he seemed just one step too slow to react and let the RB get the perimeter against him.

Look, I know he made a lot of good plays too and he's got all the talent in the world. He's only a sophomore so I fully believe it will all come together for him - I just cringe when I see so many people praising him for a couple big hits when he gave up some huge plays as well.

His good plays outweigh the bad ones, IMO.
