LB Ross Homan (official thread)

Per Coach Tressel's presser today, RH has a foot injury.

However, I thought it was odd how JT first expressed it:

"That concerns you. He'll be out for a couple weeks probably, but his thing will be fine."

A man always hopes his "thing" will be fine.

Ross will be missed. Hope the rehab goes well.

Heyward, Homan Named Lott IMPACT Trophy Quarterfinalists

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State seniors Cameron Heyward and Ross Homan are two of 23 finalists for the 2010 Lott IMPACT Trophy, awarded to college football?s Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The award is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

The semifinalists will be announced Nov. 3 and the four finalists Nov. 24. Those four finalists will be flown to Newport Beach, Ca. for the annual black-tie banquet that will be televised by FOX.

Homan, the Lott player of the week Sept. 18, leads the Buckeyes with 41 tackles on the season, including 2.0 TFL, one sack, one interception, three pass break-ups, a forced fumble and a recovery. Heyward has 20 tackles on the year and leads the Buckeyes with 5.5 TFL, an 80-yard interception return and a fumble recovery.

Now in its seventh year, the Lott is the first ? and only ? college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player. Former Buckeye James Laurinaitis won the award in 2008.

There are 10 defensive linemen on the quarterfinalist list; eight linebackers and five defensive backs. The Big 12 and the Big Ten have five players on the list, the Pac-10 four, the SEC and ACC three each, the WAC two and one independent, Army.

Homan and Bell Back in Action

Bye weeks are supposed to be a time for teams to get healthy, and the Buckeyes did just that at the linebacker position. After a week of rest, Ohio State should have Ross Homan and Dorian Bell back on the field Saturday when they host Penn State.

?I would expect Ross to be ready,? Tressel said of his senior captain who had missed the last two games with a foot injury.

?He's been out there. We didn't go live or anything. He was out there, ran 7-on-7 Sunday. Just like the trainer said, the key will be how does he do, like, two days in a row to see if there's any issues, but based upon after Sunday, I would say no doubt.?

Homan Anxious to Get Back in Action
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? If being on the field wasn?t bad enough for Ross Homan during Ohio State?s 31-18 loss at Wisconsin, the view only got worse from the sideline.

The team?s leading-tackler and one of three defensive captains for the Buckeyes, Homan was out there fighting the good fight in Madison. Despite the fact his team trailed 21-0 on the road, Homan was putting his body on the line trying to bring down Badger tailbacks John Clay and James White.

It was on one of those plays where Homan?s right foot got tangled under another player.

?It was kind of a freak thing,? Homan said.

?At Wisconsin I got stepped on and my foot twisted. It tried to roll but it couldn?t.?

He spent the rest of the game watching from the sideline as his teammates rallied but ultimately fell short in their first loss of the season. After missing the next two games, wins over Purdue and Minnesota, Homan is anxious to get back on the field for Ohio State?s week-11 game against Penn State.

?It was a little foot sprain on the bottom of my arch,? Homan said.

?I sprained some muscles down there. It?s all healed up and I?m excited to get back out there.?

Oh, brother!
Ross and Adam Homan share a special bond as one of three sets of siblings currently on the Buckeyes' roster

For Adam Homan, keeping up with big brother Ross always has been a focus and a challenge.

As they were growing up in the small town of Coldwater, Ohio, southwest of Grand Lake St. Marys, "He always wanted to follow me, he always wanted to do what I would do," Ross said. "Like when I wanted to play football with my friends, he always wanted to play, too."

The feeling, however, wasn't always mutual.

"Sometimes I'd jump on my bike knowing I could pedal faster than he could, and I'd just take off," Ross said, laughing. "He'd go crying to Mom."

Little brother caught up soon enough - just check the Ohio State roster today as the Buckeyes take on Penn State. Ross is a fifth-year senior linebacker and co-captain who is expected to return after sitting out the past two games because of a sprained foot. Adam is a sophomore fullback who has been a mainstay on special teams and has seen more action with the offense in recent weeks.

"When it's all said and done, I figure we will look back and say that was kind of crazy, how we played with each other for two years at a place so great and special as Ohio State," Ross said.

Though such an experience isn't common, there are three sets of brothers on the OSU roster. Joining the Homans are: Justin Boren, a senior left guard, and Zach Boren, a sophomore fullback, of Pickerington; and Connor Smith, a senior guard, and Spencer Smith, a junior tight end, of Cincinnati.

"I know Zach and I take it for granted, and I know Ross and Adam probably do, too," Justin Boren said. But, Boren added, "If you sit back and think about it, it's pretty neat."

Adam Homan said, "We're very grateful for this."

He?s not the second coming

ICONHoman looks like a solid, yet very average NFL linebacker prospect, nothing more.

When the preseason rankings came out this summer, Ohio State OLB Ross Homan was not only one of the highest graded outside linebacker prospects in the nation, but in some circles he was considered as one of the highest graded senior prospects overall. And I didn?t see it then and after watching him closely in back to back weeks, I certainly don?t see it now. Homan is solidly built kid, possesses good read and react ability and he knows how to find the football. Plus, he has a good feel in zone coverage, gets early jumps on throws and can mask some of the tightness in his footwork and hips because of it. However, I have been shocked in recent weeks by how many tackles this guy has missed both in a phone booth as well as in space. He showcases some natural power to his game, which can be seen when asked to take on the lead block or even anchor vs. offensive linemen pulling in the hole. But, he isn?t a guy who is real long armed and doesn?t have the ability to routinely shed once he is able to stack at the line. And as a tackler, he doesn?t seem to possess a great closing burst through ball carriers, routinely falling off his target and not having the ability to get into their core and wrap around their legs. There were at least three occasions in the first half alone this week I noticed his struggles wrapping up and that was after underlining the same thing vs. Penn State last week.

Now, he is coming back from an ankle injury that has been nagging him since the Wisconsin game, but even when healthy last season I still saw him as an average NFL prospect who looks more like a utility backer in the NFL than a clear cut starter that you know you can win with.
