Coldwater Junior Already Getting Major Looks
By Duane Long
Date: Aug 11, 2004

Linebacker/running back Ross Homan of Coldwater (Oh.) has emerged as one of the top defensive players in the current class of Ohio juniors. He is already getting some attention from big-time programs, and he also has a unique Buckeye connection as well. Duane Long has more.

Coldwater (Oh.) High School fields one of the best teams in Division IV year in and year out, and for the most part, they do it without Division I-A prospects. However, junior linebacker/running back Ross Homan is changing that.

The 6-1, 225 Homan is already listed as one of the top ten overall players in his class by Ohio High magazine. Homan was an All-Ohio performer as a sophomore and is already getting letters from some of the top programs in America.

"Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, West Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, and Indiana," he said. "Those are just the ones off the top of my head. I can't remember them all."

Homan attended camp earlier this year at Ohio State.

"I camped at Ohio State," he said. "I didn't do any other school camps. I went to Nike and MSL. I didn't run well there because I had shin splints from track. I ran a 4.5 at Ohio State."

I have been told by several people that Homan's best position may be running back. Homan says he has not played running back much but will be playing more of it this season. In track, he ran the 100, 200, and the 4x1. He has a 350 bench, a 440 squat ("That was last winter, so I'm sure I will do much better when I go for a max," he said) and a 440 deadlift.

Homan has a unique connection to one of the Buckeye coaches. Homan is the cousin of ex-OSU quarterback Bob Hoying, and Linebackers coach Luke Fickell is married to the sister of Hoying's wife.

"I spent a lot of time at the camp talking to Luke Fickell," Homan said.

Homan said he will probably make a decision before his senior year and that the Buckeyes are in the lead.

"Miami, Oklahoma, USC, and Notre Dame are the other schools I am looking at," he said.

Well, all nine of the commitments we have for this class thus far are doing so before their senior years, so it is not that early. But I see how when it is worded that way it makes it seem that much sooner.

You're right, just seems like there are more and more of them every year though.

Off-topic, but some Coldwater alum for you. When I was in college, I was friends with Steve Vagedes (played at Ohio Northern, was pretty damn good, and actually was in camp with the Falcons, Packers, and Eagles). Don't know where he is now, maybe you can shed a little light on that if the name rings a bell. Also, the QB that was either his age or around him that started off at BG and transfered to Ohio Northern - last name Franser or something like that. I didn't know him as well, but had a couple classes with him.

bearonu: I'll ask about Steve and Matt (Franser?). Was Steve the punter that is in NFL Europe or something?

I am an old man, these guys are like 10-15 years younger than me. My brothers still live in CW, I'll ask them.

Gotta love another Mercer County Buckeye!

Most of my family lives in Mercer County. My Grandmother was one of the Head Cooks at Coldwater, until she retired, like 5 years ago. I'll have to go to one of his games this year when I go back to visit.

JCOSU - Steve was a wideout and punter at ONU, but went into the NFL camps as a receiver, he was an all-american punter at the DIII level so he could have punted in NFL Europe, but I am unaware of that.

Homan Sees OSU For The First Time
By Duane Long
Date: Sep 10, 2004

LB/RB Ross Homan of Coldwater -- one of Ohio's top juniors -- was among the several outstanding prospects in attendance for Saturday's game against Cincinnati. It was his first trip to the Horseshoe, so what did he think? Duane Long caught up with Ross to find out.

Top junior Ross Homan out of Coldwater (Oh.) was in attendance for last weekend's OSU game. Homan is high on the Buckeyes and had a good time at the game.

"It was awesome. I got to talk to the coaches including Coach Tressel," he said. "That was my first game at Ohio State.

"It was awesome to be down on the field for pregame. Watching them come out of the tunnel, that was something."

Homan saw fellow top juniors Mike Hartline (QB, Canton GlenOak) and Ray Smalls (RB/WR, Cleveland Glenville) at the game, which will probably not be his last Buckeye game this year.

"I will likely be back," Homan said. "I'm thinking about going to Notre Dame too. They have offered me tickets to come over and watch the game."

Homan and Coldwater, which is one of Division IV's top teams, are off to a good start this season.

"We're 2-0 so far," he said. "We beat Kenton and (Maria Stein) Marion Local. I got one touchdown so far and one interception. I have been playing running back on offense."

Homan called Kenton junior OL D.J. Burris the best player he's faced.

"He's a pretty impressive player," Homan said.

Ross Homan is rated as one of Ohio's top ten overall juniors by Ohio High magazine. Look for him to make an early decision as he has voiced a desire to not go through the recruiting process.

sounds positive- Burris is one of the top Olineman in the state next year

beginnings of a solid '06 class- Homan, Burris, Smalls, Wells & M. Harline.
