By the time the season opener rolls around on Sept. 11, only Raymond and Homan are likely to remain on the second-team list. Add Ponder ? who should beat out Webb by then ? and perhaps cornerback Brandon Burton or tight end Kyle Rudolph, but that's about it for rookies who have a shot at being a first- or second-teamer. Considering the Vikings' reputation as a young team in rebuilding mode, that reality is a bit surprising.

"Among those who did not practice today were RB Toby Gerhart (ankle), LB Ross Homan (concussion) and LB Mark Washington (stinger). LB Heath Farwell, who missed much of last week?s practice, was back on the field. Frazier Homan will not play in this weekend?s game against the Cowboys."

Ross was running with the second team D and with the first team on a couple of the special team squads. , hope this doesn?t hurt his chances to make the 53 man roster.

Comment: A dangerously thin position got weaker when Jasper Brinkley had hip surgery this week. He's probably heading to injured reserve, opening a roster spot for undrafted rookie Dean or sixth-rounder Homan.

COLDWATER ? Injuries have apparently brought an end to Ross Homan?s pursuit of a career in the NFL.
The lingering effects of a concussion he suffered during a preseason game while playing with the Minnesota Vikings have led him to return home after signing a practice squad contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, his father Dave Homan said on Tuesday.
Homan, a 6-1, 230-pound linebacker, was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Vikings in April. He was released after Minnesota?s final preseason game.
At Ohio State, Homan was a three-year starter and was named All-Big Ten as a junior and a senior.
