COLUMBUS - Ohio State senior linebacker Mike D'Andrea will make his season debut in the homecoming game Saturday against Michigan State, coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.
D'Andrea, a Parade All-American rated the nation's top linebacker recruit when he came out of Avon Lake, underwent a second surgery on his right knee in July. He already has been granted a medical redshirt year for 2006 because he played in just four games in 2004.
Tressel said D'Andrea will start out in the middle behind starter Anthony Schlegel. Co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell said last week that because D'Andrea has missed so much time, the OSU staff might use him as a pure pass rusher. Linebacker Bobby Carpenter, who is moving to end on passing downs, leads the team with four sacks and defensive end Mike Kudla and linebacker A.J. Hawk are tied with 3.5.
``I'm excited,'' D'Andrea said. ``I'm sticking with (middle linebacker) right now. Maybe a few things down the road at other positions.''
