LB Mike D'Andrea (official thread)

Uh, that same D'Andrea beat out Schlegel for the starting MLB job last year, and was playing very well until he got hurt. He had made marked improvement reading and reacting to plays and getting to the ball carrier. And I have no idea where you got the "doesn't like to get hit" part...I saw him dive into plays quite a few times. The big thing is that he is indeed injury-prone. If he could just stay healthy for a whole season, he could at least approach the hype heaped on him when he first committed to us.
Yep, same guy. It's okay to have a different opinion....

sacrilege LJB.

2004 was the first year Schlegel saw the field at Ohio State, so you could argue that mDa had a leg up for that reason early on.

I think its way too homeristic to feel confident that mDa woudl improve the MLB position. Schlegel is a very good MLB, but isn't out of this world like the other two LBers. However, a guy who has been constantly hurt would not be my choice to base an argument like this around.

We should know soon enough how good mDa looks compared with Schlegel, as he might be back this week IIRC.

The difference between #5 and #51 is something the recruitniks call "upside".

Few among us would suggest that Schlegel has left any of his potential on the shelf.

There is the possibility though, that D'Andrea could become somthing truly special. Consider for a moment the improvement that we've seen from players like Eddie George, Will Smith, and more recently Mike Kudla.

Those of us who want to see what #5 can do are hoping for the blooming of a true super-star. Based on our experiences with the aforementioned Buckeyes, we must all admit that there is still that possibility for MDA; and I for one hope like hell he achieves it.

D'Andrea would dramatically improve our already spectacular linebacking core. Before he was injured many thought he would sometimes line up at defensive end, since he does have great size and speed. It would make our defense more versatile and keep the best players on the field.

I'm surprised he hasn't seen the field more as a hybrid...I think his athleticism is definitely a plus, and if he doesn't do enough well to nail down a single spot, move him around and cause some havoc that way.

his measurables are juicy, but do we have evidence that he's a good hybrid LB (rush end) at the college level? There are plenty of extremely athletic freaks that play on UM's defense that underachieve regularly. Not bashing mDa, just saying that we have yet to see enough to know that he would take our LBs to the next level.

Salley is far from the fastest safety, but look how long he's been the rock back there. Measurables are good for fans and recruiting sites. Roy Hall hasn't achieved his potential yet either, tho I think he's doing well in his current role.

No offense to grego, but IMHO this is a senseless thread. It accomplishes nothing and is about as pointless as arguing why the sky would look better if it were green. Our LB corps is the best in the country for a reason, and Schlegel is one of the three reasons. The sky is blue because it looks best that way.

With all due respect to Schlegal who is and has performed very well... but
Count me as one who is a believer that MDA is the better MLB...
and I anxiously await next year to watch him show it...

Before MDA got hurt he was moving from sideline to sideline like a frickin' torpedo. It's a great thing to have a guy like AS as our MLB this year, but I think next year D'Andrea will improve the position if he stays healthy.

Many of us are forgetting that Mike D'Andrea was the Rush End on 3rd downs last year like Carpenter is this year. If they picked MDA over carpenter last year for rush end there had to be a reason! Just imagine if we could use him as such this year and then leave carpenter back with Hawk as our linebackers. It'd be sickning how fast that formation would be for us.

I think Schlegal is better for obvious reasons right now (MDA injury), and Schlegal is doing a very very good job! Either way its a good problem to have! GO BUCKS

Wouldn't D'Andrea be bad idea at DE? He has had some major knee problems for me to think he'd really help out game to game situations at DE.
I certainly would think it'd be sweet if he came back next year but if he's in good shape now i wouldnt blame him for really wanting to get back out on the field.
