LB Mike D'Andrea (official thread)

why doesnt he want two more years. Does he think he will go pro after next year, and if so is he that good?? I would like to have for two more years.

i agree, if i were in a situation (assuming there are no unforseen issues) i would definitely take the 2 years if i could. so much can happen in 1 season that can radically alter where you fall in the draft pecking order. if i can get 2 seasons to prove my worth over 1... heck yeah im taking it. if i make myself a first rounder in year 1 great. but if not, i still have the second season if i need it. perhaps he is in a situation where a paycheck is becoming a priority?

he probably wouldn't get two more years. Huston was hurt during two years I believe, and only got one (IIRC). Either way, he is a star backup LB, and has missed tons of PT over the last 2.5 years. I seriously doubt he can stand sitting on the sidelines anymore if he is finally healthy, especially when he can be such an impact player.

Huston got a regular redshirt and a 6th year for a medical redshirt, upon appeal to the NCAA.

NCAA rules are you have five years to play four and the clock starts ticking as soon as you enroll full time. A 6th season would only be granted under extraordinary circumstances, like Huston or Jason White being hurt two years and not playing at all. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I believe even if he got the NCAA to waive last year he would only be eligible for next year, not two more.

He's played some in all 4 seasons so I think we're lucky the NCAA even gave him a redshirt for last season.

He has been dinged up so often that he probably just wants to get one more good year of college and take his chances in the NFL. He might be worried that he'll get hurt again if he stays 6 years. If nobody leaves early our DL should be better next year and allow D'Andrea to have a great season. He has the combine measurables to be drafted high if he has one good year on the field.

I agree with the 5 years to play 4. And since D'Andrea already won an appeal for the medical redshirt, there's no way he could play longer than the 2006 season, unless he doesn't play at all this year. He had planned to use the regular redshirt this year if he didn't win the medical redshirt with the appeal.

D'Andrea was granted the 6th year medical redshirt so he would have 2 more years of eligibility if he didn't play this year. He still has a normal redshirt that he could use if he wanted to sit out a year.

don't they usually wait until after the 5th year to apply for teh medical redshirt? I thought this case was somewhat unique in that they heard back from the NCAA very early, in time to let him know that he could play this year and still be eligible for an additional 5th year.

I think in this case they applied for the medical redshirt in time to let D'Andrea know if he could play this season. If he was denied he would have taken his normal redshirt this year and played his final season next year.

:osu: Thanks for clearing it up. Thought I was right, (about sitting out this year as a 'shirt year and then having two years left). What I was missing was that he played in MSU (or PSU?) game, which cost him his normal redshirt year. Didn't hear his name mentioned, nor see him in the 'appearance' section of BSB.

The part about him not wanting to go two more years of college ball is something that I did not know. Two years of starting in the middle (and I think the 07 team will be pretty good - but next year will be 'down') would put him in good standing with the pros.........but hey, "too soon old, too late wise."

You can only get a 6th year if you have already used a normal redshirt year and then are injured and apply for another year and an extension to the 5 year clock. Since the loss of a season for medical reasons occurred prior to his taking a normal redshirt year it was never an option for him to get both.

In all other cases where a player gets 6 I think you will find that they did a RS, then got hurt in a later year and requested a 6th.

He was on the kick coverage team vs. MSU. Those 'appearance' sections don't seem very accurate, it seems.

edit: it appears 2 extra years was never an option, per Oh8ch.
