LB Mike D'Andrea (official thread)

You can only get a 6th year if you have already used a normal redshirt year and then are injured and apply for another year and an extension to the 5 year clock. Since the loss of a season for medical reasons occurred prior to his taking a normal redshirt year it was never an option for him to get both.

In all other cases where a player gets 6 I think you will find that they did a RS, then got hurt in a later year and requested a 6th.

Good clarification, Oh8ch. The other exception to the "5 years to play 4" rule is the Mormon mission (common at BYU) guys that take 2 years for a mission and can end up playing in year 6. They are also able to redshirt on top of the 2-year mission, which gives them 7 years.

Tyson Walter left????

It's amazing like it seems like some guys are with the Buckeyes forever (Lydell Ross, Tyson Walter) and some guy you can't believe they are already seniors (Nate Salley, Mike D'Andrea) I really can't believe D'Andrea has already been here for 4 years...it seems like he just got here. Same with Salley. Yet it seems like A.J. Hawk has been around forever as well. I dunno if others feel the same, but for me it feels like some players careers seem to go fast, and others slow, and it doesn't always go with how many years they play.

I hope Carpenter can make it back for the bowl game but it seems doubtful. I'm wondering if after another 6 weeks of recovery/practice, if Mike D'Andrea might be able to take some of the burden off Laurinaitis. Laurinaitis did a great job spelling Carpenter, but I don't think one player can step into Carpenters role. D'Andrea has the size and speed (Or at least did before his injury) that could really help fill the void. Haven't heard much recently about D'Andrea though, not sure how he's been progressing. Any news on him?

I think they are letting him heal more knowing he will be back next year. No reason to risk injuring it again. Now maybe after the this break he might be able to go again.

exactly. knowing that all three linebacker starters are graduating this year, i'm sure that tressel will take no risk in playing d'andrea in the bowl game. also, laurinaitis has racked up some valuable minutes. playing nearly all of the michigan game has to go a long way. li'l animal has another six weeks to practice as the starting linebacker. finally, i'm sure that tressel would like to give laurinaitis some more experience in a big game. i see laurinaitis, kerr, and others playing in the bowl game before i see d'andrea playing.

Let's also keep in mind, we will have Freeman next year and I think Hoobler and maybe Homan could have something to say about playing time.

Status of Mike D'Andrea

Since we will lose Carpenter, AJ Hawk, and Schlegal as our starting linebackers i am wondering the whereabouts of Mike D'Andrea. Is
he still injured or is he also a senior ane will not be back either. This is one area that our defense will suffer badly for the year 2006.

Maybe i did go to extreme on "suffer badly" but its going to be hard to replace the likes of these 3 people. lets put it that way. Jwinslow thanks for merging this into the proper thread. I'm alittle slow in finding the proper threads to answer my questions. Sorry.
