LB Mike D'Andrea (official thread)

Does anyone think that next year, a healthy D'Andrea may have a similar role like Carp this year? I know during the 2004 season before his injury he spent sometime as the "leo". Any thoughts?

Honestly no, I think they would want to stay away from him playing there, first b/c of his knee injury and second b/c they should have some nice depth at DE next year, with Gholston, Wilson, Richardson, Patterson.

I think Mike will be the full-time Mike backer next year and I am hoping for a breakout year.

Do you think they will move Freeman over to Will to make room for Little Animal or do you think Freeman will back up Little Animal?
Remember that Freeman would have been playing a fair amount this year along with Carp had Freeman not been injured.
I think you move freeman over and make some room. However, Tressel and company see them everyday so i know that we will be put in the best postion to win by the coaches. My prediction for the starting LBs next year:

OLB MLB MLB
Freeman D'Andrea Laurinaitis

True, but when Carpenter got hurt they put Laurinaitis right in and he played the whole Michigan game. The clearly tells me they have faith in him and he and Freeman are the two top underclassmen at LB, and as such will be playing on the opposite sides with D'Andrea in the middle.

I see Animal Jr. taking over for Carp, D'Andrea taking over for the Boar Hunter, and Freeman taking over for Hawk with Hoobler and Kerr backing up all three positions. I do thing there will be a fierce competition for those three positions in the spring. That should make the spring game fun to watch. This is the money year for D'Andrea and Kerr so expect them to work their asses off to earn a spot.

I as well think it will be D'Andrea, Lil Animal, and Freeman making the starts next year. But keep your eyes open for John Kerr. The man has been playing backup to AJ Hawk (one of OSUs greatest Linebackers), so he should be ready to get some PT next year as well.

Tressel has been prepping, heavily, some of our DE's to play opposit of Kudla as a down rush for the Notre Dame game. I could see this as a strong possiblity for next year if they feel Laurinaitis isnt doing his job to the impact they would like.

Note to "YoungBucknut": D'Animal is a junior this year, meaning he will have only one year left.

I think one of the most anticipated moves of spring will be Mike D taking Carp's roll as the rush linebacker.
How big is DAndre, now?
I'm guessing he's lost some quickness, but should still be plenty fast.
My research says DAndre is 6-3 248. That makes him slightly lighter than Carp.

Yes! You did miss the talk of Mike D'Andrea in Carp's spot.
He was quoted as saying as such.
Mili, you think he's bigger than 248, now?

I just checked his thread and the only "talk" was a few BP members tossing the idea around. As for his size, I would imagine he's still around the 250 range...I really have no intel on that.

It was Steve Helwagon who mentioned it. He quoted Mike. Said the coaches had talked to Mike about it. Trust me on this, Mili.

In my opinion he doesnt have the coverage skills to play any sort of outside linebacker. Maybe if his leg wasnt injury prone, MAYBE he could do it. Carp was able to put his hand down on the line as well as drop back into coverage, this just does not seem like something D'Andrea will be able to do 100% for a full 60 minutes. His size molds him well into a MLB fit.

Has anyone given the thought that we could play a 4-4 or 4-3 defense during some games next year? That actually might suit our strengths with all the inside talent on defense.
