LB Marcus Freeman (HC Notre Dame, Constant Backtracker)

Freeman said, "I loved my time at Ohio State… but Notre Dame offers you something that nowhere else in the country can give you, and that’s the opportunity to win a national championship."

1) Every team in America has the opportunity to win a national championship, but an elite few have the resources to do it and the necessary experience.
2) Notre Dame is not one of those teams. They finished ranked in the top 5 only three times in the last 25 years and played for the national championship only once in a blowout loss.
3) Ohio State is one of those teams, with 2 national championships, 6 NC college football playoffs, and 15 top 5 finishes in the last 25 years.
4) Ohio State is a top 50 "Public Ivy" ranked as a peer of Notre Dame in most educational departments and offering a far broader set of majors and specialties.

Not to offend you, but he explicitly said something untrue and very stupid and implied that Notre Dame had several advantages over Ohio State that it does not.

That’s not what he said… he listed three things that as a package were making his point, not that each of the three would stand alone individually. There was no “period” at the end of the championship part of the quote.

I actually agree with the sentiment that it was still a stupid quote (with all three of his points) and is probably an indicator of other issues that will come up. But taking that comment and saying he said come to ND if you want to win championships is _______.

Thanks, as you did, I took his points in summative context. For the future, the only part of his comment suggesting something unique about Notre Dame is highlighted in the full quote.

“I loved my time at Ohio State, and wouldn’t be here if I didn’t spend that time there. But we believe that Notre Dame offers you something that nowhere else in the country can give you. That's the opportunity to win a national championship, to be developed to be an NFL draft pick and to join a network from this degree that you can earn from this place that will set you up for the rest of your life.”

Notre Dame has a national fanbase. So does Ohio State. Notre Dame has an alumni base, which is supportive. Ohio State also has a supportive alumni base, which is traditionally the largest in the USA and 5 times larger than Notre Dame. While both universities have good support, but there are several other universities that are capable of playing for a national championship that can claim to attract more funding and active alumni support in a given year.

It was a silly thing to say and has exposed the points he probably raises in recruiting conversations for proactive rebuttal. He will no doubt learn from this.

Seems like he is loyal to the $$ as we all are lol.
There are plenty of people in the world who have values that rise above what results in the most money. Acting like no one is above that is just an excuse for bad behavior.

Also, there is nothing in his contract that stipulates he needs to talk shit about other schools in order to receive his paycheck.

When discussing the academics at Notre Dame in an interview with CBS Sports, Freeman took an apparent shot at the academic rigor for an Ohio State football player, suggesting that if a player didn't want to go to class, he can just "take some online classes, show up for your appointments."

"I'm not saying from top to bottom, but the majority of our kids, they -- I want to say this the right way -- are pushed to learn and their study habits are formulated every day. You can't cheat academics at Notre Dame."

To make his point, Freeman brought up the two most significant football stops in this career before coming to Notre Dame in 2021. At Ohio State, Freeman played defensive back for Tressel, eventually becoming a fifth-round NFL Draft choice of the Chicago Bears. At Cincinnati, he earned a reputation as one of the nation's best defensive coordinators.

"You don't go to class [at places like that]?" Freeman said rhetorically. "OK, take some online classes, show up for your appointments. At Notre Dame, you're forced every day to go to class."

Freeman, of course, attended Ohio State from 2004 to 2008 where he played linebacker under then-head coach Jim Tressel.

Yeah right, no ND football player ever cheated on his academics:

Notre Dame Forced to Vacate Wins From National Runner-Up Season

The NCAA has ordered Notre Dame to vacate its football wins from the 2012 and 2013 seasons after denying the school’s appeal of sanctions tied to academic misconduct.

Ex-Irish QB violated honor code

"It wasn't due to poor grades or anything like that," he told Sports Illustrated in a video posted Tuesday by the magazine. Asked directly if he cheated on a test, Golson said: "Yeeeeeeeaaaahhh, something like that."

Marcus is running his mouth again. Now, he's prattling on about online classes and how ND players have to go to class every day.

Guy is clearly willing to burn his bridges by publicly bad mouthing the school, the program amd the players repeatedly. What I've heard so far is worse than anything from Herbstreit. FAKE BUCKEYE.
Fake, and after Sept 3rd, soon-to-be disgraced alumni.
