CENTERVILLE ? Mike Nugent tucked away a lot of championship memories in four years of playing on Ohio State University football teams.

A record-setting kicker who now makes his living as the Cincinnati Bengals franchise player, among the most noteworthy is this gem:

Mike Nugent benefited from an NFL reboot last season.

An outstanding kicker at Centerville High School, then at Ohio State University, he seemed a sure thing to extend that success with the New York Jets. It didn?t happen.

Landing with the Bengals, the team he grew up admiring, for the 2010 season was a dream come true. Blowing out the anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his right leg on an onside kick that season was a kicker?s worst nightmare.

Fully healed, Nugent had a career season last fall. Just last week he signed a franchise tender of $2.654 million for this coming season. It?s a one-year deal and a nice present to him and his fiancee, Emily, who he met on Chris Spielman?s Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. They?ll be married in two weeks.

Nugent, 30, addressed all that and more as the featured speaker during Thursday?s annual Sonny Unger Foundation banquet that benefits Centerville football.

Q: Were you always a football guy?

A: I was one of those guys who always played a different sport. I played baseball in the spring. I always played soccer, but soccer and football were in the same season. Once I got to sixth grade, I thought I?m going to take a break from soccer and try football. It was time to try something new. I started kicking a little bit just because I played soccer so much. I went back to soccer in seventh grade and back to football in eighth.

Nugent Not In Attendance For First OTA

CINCINNATI -

Today the Bengals held their first Organized Team Activity (OTA). Every signed player was in attendance except for kicker Mike Nugent. Nugent received the franchise tag from the Bengals in early March and signed his franchise tag tender last month. It is worth noting that offseason workouts and OTA's are voluntary. Nugent is not expected to arrive until mandatory minicamp June 12-14.

Bengals kicker Mike Nugent, the club's franchise free agent, surfaced Tuesday at Paul Brown Stadium to kick off the second week of voluntary on-field workouts. He attended last week's Thursday practice, just five days ater his wedding.

There was some speculation Nugent wouldn't show until training camp, but now that he's married (May 19 in Hilton Head, S.C.) and he's been tendered the one-year, $2.7 million franchise offer for five weeks, he decided he wanted to be with the club.

"One of your goals when you get into the NFL is you want your team to want you back," Nugent said. "I'm fortunate to be in a situation the team wants me back. As long as I keep doing the right things so the team is saying that about you, that's my thinking about the whole thing."

Nugent, off a season he set the club record for field goals and points, admitted seeing "the business side of it is tough." But he's remaining optimistic a long-term deal can get done and he's hoping the recent four-year deal signed by Tampa Bay's Connor Barth ($3.3 million average and $4 million guaranteed, according to ESPN.com) might help move negotiations simply because there is now a number out there.

Fresh off getting married, kicker Mike Nugent has reported to the Bengals halfway through their offseason program.

Nugent, who received the franchise tag before free agency began, had his physical last Thursday. Tuesday marked his second practice as the team resumed Organized Team Activities.

When it comes to working out a long-term deal, progress has been slow. Nugent, though, remains optimistic that something can be worked out by July 15, which is the deadline for tagged players to negotiate a deal or play under the tag, which for kickers is $2.654 million, which is guaranteed. Nugent had a base salary of $685,000 last season.

?With the negotiation process, everyone?s trying to get to one common goal. At the end of the day, and I?ve been saying this for awhile, one of your goals is you want your team to want you back.,? Nugent said. ?I?m in a very fortunate position in that my team wants me to come back for another season. As long as you can keep performing and do the right things and your team is saying that about you, that was my thinking about the whole thing.?

While the Bengals were going through offseason conditioning, Nugent was kicking up at Ohio State. Last year during the lockout, Nugent, punter Kevin Huber and long snapper Clark Harris remained in Cincinnati and worked out at UC.

When it comes to negotiations, the one benefit is that Tampa Bay and Connor Barth have set the market. The Bucs originally tagged Barth, but both sides came to an agreement two weeks ago on a four-year deal worth $13.2 million. Barth will average $3.3 million over the course of the contract with $4 million being guaranteed.

Said Nugent of the deal: ?I?m not really sure how to look at it. I kind of took it as a positive. He deserved it. He?s been kicking really well for them. It?s one of those things, you hope we?ll keep talking.

?But at the end of the day it?s great being back with the guys and Darrin (Simmons) and working with the coaches and just showing them that it?s not like I?ve been sitting around the whole time. I?ve been staying in shape and started kicking a couple of months of go.?

Nugent set a team record for field goals last season, making 34 of 40, and points (136). He also had two game-winning field goals. Nugent, though, did struggle down the stretch, missing four of his last 11 kicks.

When the tag deadline hits, Nugent will be on his honeymoon in Hawaii. Nugent got married on May 19 to Emily Cunningham in Hilton Head, S.C. The two met on Chris Spielman's Buckeye Cruise four years ago.

After missing the first five weeks of the Bengals' offseason program, kicker Mike Nugent has reported to the team for the remaining three weeks of OTAs and minicamp. Whether or not he has a multi-year contract by the time the team reports to training camp in late July remains another matter.

Nugent was one of six punters or kickers who received the franchise tag, worth $2.654 million this season. So far Giants punter Steve Weatherford and Tampa Bay's Connor Barth have signed longer deals.

It is still quite an increase for Nugent, who had a base salary of $685,000 last season, but what he wants is security beyond this season.

"With the negotiation process, everyone's trying to get to one common goal. At the end of the day, and I've been saying this for awhile, one of your goals is you want your team to want you back," Nugent said. "I'm in a very fortunate position in that my team wants me to come back for another season. As long as you can keep performing and do the right things and your team is saying that about you, that was my thinking about the whole thing."

Negotiations though are at a standstill. If Nugent and the Bengals are unable to reach an agreement by July 15, they can not resume until the offseason.

The benefit now is that there is a benchmark set. Barth will average $3.3 million over the course of his four-year, $13.2 million contract with $4 million being guaranteed. Barth was second in the league in field-goal accuracy which means that the other deals should come in lower.

Earlier this offseason, the Cincinnati Bengals decided to put the franchise tag on kicker Mike Nugent instead of signing him to a long-term contract. Maybe the Bengals want to see Nugent put together a complete season before giving him a new deal.

In his two seasons in Cincinnati, Nugent has started strong before fading. In 2010, he hit 12 of his first 13 field goals before missing three of his final six that season (he suffered a season-ending knee injury on Nov. 14). Last season, Nugent missed one kick in his first 14 games (going 26 of 27) and then missed four in his final three games (hitting 7 of 11), which included a playoff loss at Houston.

"We?re really confident in Mike, and I think Mike has to finish the season just as well as he started the last two," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. "That?ll really solidify him and his confidence level."

Nugent, 30, set Bengals single-season records for points (132) and field goals (33) last season. His base salary last year was $685,000.

He signed his $2.645 million franchise tender in April and has been working out with the team this offseason.

"Everyone is striving for the long-term deal. As long as you can be optimistic and that's still on the table, that's something to shoot for," Nugent said. "At the end of the day, it would be great to come to an agreement like that. When it's all said and done, I want to be positive about it. If you come in every day being negative, you're probably going to kick poorly."

As expected, no extension this season for Nugent

Monday came and went without the Bengals and Mike Nugent reaching an agreement on a multi-year deal, meaning Nugent will officially be playing this season on his franchise tag.

The fact that Nugent was going to play under the tag was expected since both sides had not had any sustaining discussions in recent weeks.

Nugent will earn $2.645 million this season under the tag and could be an unrestricted free agent next year. Both sides can continue talking, but an extension can not be signed until the offseason.

Of the five kickers who received the franchise tag, three came to agreements on four-year deals. Jacksonville?s Josh Scobee, who has the same agent as Nugent, got a new deal a couple hours before the deadline that is worth $3.45 million per year.

While Scobee was first in the AFC in field goal accuracy, Nugent was first in the AFC and second in the league last year in total field goals with 33, which set a Bengals single-season record. His 132 points were also a franchise single-season record and he was eighth in the league in field-goal accuracy.

Of Nugent?s 80 kickoffs, 67 reached the end zone and 36 were touchbacks, which is a big reason why the Bengals coverage team was ranked first in average field position of the 20.3 yard line.

After coming back from a knee injury suffered midway through the 2010 season, Nugent was the Bengals recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award.

All three kickers who signed extensions are averaging upwards of $3 million a year. Besides Scobee, Denver?s Matt Prater will average $3.25 million per season and Tampa Bay?s Connor Barth $3.3 million per year.

Off what Nugent said during offseason workouts, playing under the tag this year shouldn?t faze him that much.

?If your team wants you back, I can?t complain about that,? he said. ?Obviously it hasn?t been an easy process. But that?s why it?s called negotiating. At the end of the day you have to remain optimistic about it.?

The Bengals took a 24-0 lead into halftime after Mike Nugent set a stadium record and tied a franchise record by making a 55-yard field goal.

The career-long kick came 38 seconds after Nugent missed wide right from 48 yards.

?Hit it or miss it, it can?t have an effect on the next one,? the Bengals kicker said after the 34-10 victory against the Raiders at Paul Brown Stadium.

After Nugent?s miss, the Bengals got the ball back quickly on an interception by safety Chris Crocker with 8 seconds remaining in the second quarter. An 11-yard pass from quarterback Andy Dalton to wide receiver Mohamed Sanu moved the Bengals into field-goal range.

?It was surprising when he missed the one before,? Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis said. ?I watch him make those kicks all the time. So, yeah, I have a lot of faith in Mike.?

Nugent?s kick from 55 yards split the uprights as the half expired and tied Chris Bahr?s record for longest field goal in team history. Bahr?s came in an overtime loss against the Oilers on Sept.23, 1979.

The previous record for the longest field goal at Paul Brown Stadium was 54 yards by Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter in 2010 and Browns kicker Phil Dawson last season.

Nugent?s longest NFL field goal before Sunday was from 54 yards, most recently against the Patriots on Sept.12, 2010.

?There?s a certain point on the field where you have to put more into it, and I think my number is a little bit higher than 55,? said Nugent, who now is 6for15 from 50 yards or longer.

CINCINNATI — The idea of joining his former Ohio State teammates tempted Mike Nugent to make a last-minute drive to Columbus on Saturday.

The Cincinnati Bengals kicker decided against making the trip because the team’s practice didn’t end until 11 a.m. and he wasn’t certain he could make it to Ohio Stadium in time to join the 2002 OSU national champions for an on-field salute at the Buckeyes’ game against Michigan.

“I really wanted to get back,” Nugent said. “But I knew because of the timing of our practice that it was going to be tight. I wanted to stay off my feet and be more rested for our game.”
