Nugent is Ed Block recipient; Johnson signed to practice squad

Written by jreedy

The Bengals have named K Mike Nugent as their recipient of this year?s Ed Block Courage Award. The award honors players who demonstrate commitment to the values of sportsmanship and courage. Each NFL team selects one player as its representative. Nugent will be honored with other teams? recipients at the annual awards banquet in Baltimore after the 2011 season.

Nugent?s tore the ACL last season in a November game at Indianapolis. He made a full recovery from the injury in time for the start of training camp in July. Through Week 14, he leads the NFL in field goal accuracy 92.6 percent on 25-of-27 field goals.

?Mike showed focus and tenacity as he rehabilitated his knee following his torn anterior cruciate injury on his kicking leg from 2010,? said Bengals trainer Paul Sparling, ?The lockout added an additional degree of difficulty, which required him to be fully in charge of his recovery. In what had the potential to be a career-impacting injury, Mike showed courage and commitment, and as a result returned to pre-injury form at the start of training camp.?

Nugent also has two game-winning field goals this season late in the fourth quarter ? Oct. 2 vs. Buffalo and Nov. 27 vs. Cleveland. His 25 total field goals rank tied for fifth in the NFL. The former Ohio State standout entered the NFL in 2005 as a second-round pick of the Jets, where he spent four seasons. He then briefly spent time with Tampa Bay and Arizona in 2009, before joining the Bengals as a free agent last year.

Guts and glory for Nugent
By GEOFF HOBSON

nugent111211_440.jpg

The Bengals voted kicker Mike Nugent their winner of the Ed Block Courage Award and the day after it was announced Nugent had the guts to say with three games left that 2011 is not the most satisfying of his seven NFL seasons.

Yet.

?If the season was over I would be able to answer that,? Nugent said before Wednesday?s practice. ?It?s not how you start but how you finish. It?s big not only on a personal level, but where the team is at now.?

Just 13 months removed from his ugly torn anterior cruciate in, of all things, his kicking knee, Nugent is on top of the game and the NFL. Not only does he lead the league in field-goal percentage with just two misses in 27 tries but he?s shattered his career-best nine touchbacks with 31 that is tied for 12th.

Special teams coach Darrin Simmons realizes the touchbacks have ballooned because the kickoff was moved up to the 35-yard line this season. But 31 isn?t nine.

?It proves he got stronger,? Simmons said. ?It shows how hard he worked and the resolve he showed during his rehab. There hasn?t been one day he came to me and said, 'I can?t go today,? or ?my knee is too tired,? or anything like that.?

Chance at a Pro Bowl this season for Nuge? That'd be pretty sweet.

He's got a shot at it, but Janikowski has only 2 misses on the year, and is 5-6 on FGs of 50+, including a record-tying 63-yarder, so he'll probably get the nod in the AFC.

Nuge has no official attempts over 50 yards.

Another proud Buckeye

Clements wasn?t the only former OSU player on the Bengals to find something to cherish. Mike Nugent?s three field goals allowed the kicker to set two franchise records.

Nugent made two 46-yard field goals and a 23-yarder to finish with team single-season records for field goals (33) and points (132).

?Doug Pelphrey and Jim Breech paved the way for people like me playing now,? said Nugent, mentioning two former Bengals kickers. ?You always want to try to be part of the argument, whatever the argument. If I can get my name in there with those kinds of guys, that means a lot.?

Nugent has missed five of his 38 field goal tries this year, although three of those misses have come in the past two games, including a 36-yard attempt yesterday that went wide right into a strong wind.

?I feel like I?m hitting the ball well,? he said.

NUGENT CONFIDENT: Kicker Mike Nugent has missed three of nine field goal attempts the last two games, including two from less than 40 yards, but he feels good going into Saturday?s game.

?The past few hits the past couple of games I?ve been happy with how I?ve hit the ball, but I just haven?t been reading it right,? said Nugent.

Nugent has made 33 of 38 attempts overall this season. His total field goals made is a franchise record for a single season, as is the 132 points he scored.

This will be his first experience kicking at Reliant Stadium, which has a retractable roof, but he made all three of his previous postseason field goal attempts with the New York Jets in 2006 at New England.

Nugent thought initially that his 36-yard attempt against Baltimore last Sunday was good but the officials ruled it went wide right.

Reviewing it on film was no help.

?I agree that where the refs stand is the best spot to tell,? said Nugent. ?I feel that I have a good view on the field but to get the best view you have to be underneath. Unless you have a camera underneath there you have to bite the bullet and trust that they make the right call.?

Franchise tag targets: Bengals
February, 15, 2012

By Jamison Hensley
A look at potential franchise tag targets for each of the AFC North teams. The window for tagging players opens Monday and closes March 5.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

The Bengals haven't used the franchise tag much, and it hasn't worked the times that they did. Cincinnati placed the tag on versatile offensive lineman Stacy Andrews in 2008 when he wasn't a full-time starter, and he went to the Philadelphia Eagles the following season. In 2009, kicker Shayne Graham expressed his frustration over being given the tag and ended the season by missing two field goals in the AFC wild-card playoff game against the New York Jets.

While the odds are against the Bengals using the franchise tag this year, here are the options:

Top candidate: Mike Nugent, kicker. He was the league's most accurate kicker until late in the season when he missed four field goals over the final three games. So, the price of the tag (an estimated $2.6 million for this season) isn't too costly considering Nugent's effectiveness. This is also a way of keeping Nugent off the free-agent market and increasing the chances of reaching a long-term deal. Denver's Matt Prater is another kicker who is expected to get the franchise tag.

Bengals PK Nugent gets franchise tag
Posted March 02, 2012
By PFW staff

The Bengals placed their franchise tag on PK Mike Nugent on Friday. Nugent, a seventh-year veteran, converted on 33-of-38 field-goal attempts in the 2011 season.

Nugent joined the Bengals in 2010. He spent his first four seasons with the Jets and split the '09 season with the Buccaneers and Cardinals.

In his career, Nugent has made 80.9 percent of his FG attempts and is 147-of-150 on point-after tries. He had 36 touchbacks last season on 80 kickoffs. The 2011 campaign was the first in which Nugent played all 16 games since 2007.

The projected franchise tender for kickers this offseason is worth an estimated $2.6 million, according to PFW correspondent and Cincinnati Enquirer writer Joe Reedy.
