Mike Nugent was a big Bengals fan growing up in Centerville. Kicking a 43-yard field goal Sunday as time expired to give the Bengals a 23-20 come-from-behind victory against Buffalo held a little more meaning to him.

?It?s a very good feeling, and not just for the obvious,? said Nugent. ?But to do it for your team ? and when I say your team I mean I grew up a die-hard Bengals fan. I?ve been coming to games my whole life and I?ve watched guys like Jim Breech do it all of the time. It?s one of those things where we need to remember this feeling and bring it into next week.?

PERFECT 10: Mike Nugent's comeback from a major knee injury is going perfectly.

The Bengals kicker tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a game in Indianapolis last November. His kicking leg gave out as he chased an onside kick, putting his NFL career at risk.

So far, he's been as good as ever. Better, actually.

Nugent kicked a 43-yard field goal as time ran out Sunday for a 23-20 win over Buffalo. The down-the-middle kick left him 10 for 10 on field goal tries, one of only three kickers in the league who hasn't missed with so many attempts. Plus, 19 of his 20 kickoffs have reached the end zone, with 13 of them ending up as touchbacks ? tied for fifth in the league.

With NFL players locked out for most of the offseason, Nugent had to make the difficult comeback on his own.

"I knew it could go either way," Nugent said. "You could be one of those guys that says, 'OK, I've got some months off and I'm going to take my time and do things slowly' ? and go backward every day. Or I could be one of those people who says, 'OK, this is a test. How much am I going to work to make this better?' "

His leg was strong and his kicks were accurate when he showed up for training camp, earning his teammates' faith. When Nugent headed onto the field for the winning kick Sunday, quarterback Andy Dalton gave him encouragement.

"He always says something to me after a good series or drive," Dalton said. "So I went up to him and said to just do his thing. He's really good, so I don't think there was any pressure there."

NO LONGER PERFECT: Mike Nugent missed his first field goal of the season and broke a streak of 14 consecutive makes when his 43-yard attempt with 2:36 remaining in the game sailed wide right. The Bengals led 20-17 at the time.

Nugent had made his first 13 attempts of the season plus one at Indianapolis last November before his season ended with torn knee ligaments suffered in that 23-17 Colts? victory.

Nugent made his first two attempts of the game, from 20 yards and 43 yards. His streak of 14 straight is the third longest in franchise history; Shayne Graham had streaks of 21 and 17 consecutive.

Four of the five kickoffs Mike Nugent had for the Bengals last Sunday at Tennessee resulted in touchbacks. The height and distance of the ball gave Titans return specialist Marc Mariani little choice but to take a knee when he got his hands on the ball.

When the NFL instituted its rule this season to move kickoffs up five yards from the 30-yard line to the 35, it was done with player safety in mind. Some of the game?s most violent collisions occur on kickoffs.

Nugent now has 23 touchbacks on 42 kickoffs halfway through the season, easily surpassing his total of seven in nine games last season. Part of it is the new rule. Part of it is that after suffering torn ligaments in his right knee last year Nugent has come back stronger.

?There were times in the offseason when I was worried if my leg was going to be strong enough because I was behind where the other kickers in the NFL were in March and April,? said Nugent. ?I did a lot of work in the offseason to make sure I was stronger.?
