K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

Kicker Mike Nugent hasn't signed his one-year franchise tender of $1.7 million and he very well may not do it in time to participate in the voluntary workouts. After he worked out on his own last offseason during the lockout, he broke several single-season Bengals records in a career season. If Nugent doesn't sign it by July 15, he and the club can keep talking but can't sign a long-term deal until after the season.

Bengals signed franchise player Mike Nugent to a one-year, $2.654 million contract.
Nugent, 30, will be fully guaranteed the salary for the 2012 season, and the Bengals are likely interested in a long-term deal. An early-career bust as a former second-round pick by Herm Edwards' Jets, Nugent has gotten his career on track recently. He converted 33 of his 38 field goal attempts last season. Nugent can't be expected to match that production from a fantasy perspective in 2012, but he's certainly got a very strong leg. Apr 25

WTF? He was nowhere near a "bust" with the Jets. His worst season in his three full kicking seasons there was his rookie year when he was 22 of 28 (78.6%). In his next two years, he was 24 of 27 (88.9%) and 29 of 36 (80.6%), giving him a three-season total of 75 of 91 (82.3%), hardly a "bust". He suffered a season-ending injury in his fourth season there, limiting him to only one FG attempt (a miss). His only bad season was 2009 when he was 2 of 6 (33.3%) for Tampa Bay.

In his two seasons at Cincinnati he's 48 of 57 (84.2%), only 1.9% better than his "bust" time with the Jets, yet it's good enough to earn him the franchise tag. Rotoworld can EABOD...

That being said, I'd rather have Nuge in Bengal stripes than that ginger Shayne Graham.

Nugent's career percentage is 81%, which puts him roughly at dead average among modern NFL kickers. And though the Rotoworld report cited his "strong leg," that really isn't borne out by his inability to hit from 50+ yards. He has only 5 in his career from outside the opponents' 40.

Nuge is a good NFL kicker rather than a great one, and the Bengals putting the franchise tag on him is consistent with their usual odd decision-making.

I would franchise Kathy Ireland rather than run the risk of being stuck with Shayne Graham again.

Kicker Nugent seeks longer Bengals? association
Centerville, OSU product sees success ahead and wants to be part of it.
By Jay Morrison, Staff Writer
Thursday, April 26, 2012

CINCINNATI ? The day after signing a one?year, $2.56 million contract tender, Cincinnati Bengals kicker Mike Nugent said he hopes this is the beginning of negotiations and not an end point.

?My overall reaction is that I would rather keep talking and try to work on a long-term deal,? said Nugent, a Centerville High School and Ohio State graduate whom the Bengals used their franchise tag on last month.

?Everyone is looking for the long-term contract so you can stay with your team for a good amount of years,? Nugent added. ?Hopefully this tag will be an extension of our discussions. I understand the draft is the first priority at this time, but hopefully we can get (a long-term contract) done.?

Nugent had a base salary of $685,000 in 2011, the final season of a two-year contract he signed as a free agent prior to the 2010 season.

His 33 field goals and 132 points were franchise records and he ranked eighth in the NFL in field goal accuracy (33-of-38 for 86.8 percent). Nugent sent 67 of his 80 kickoffs into the end zone, with 36 resulting in touchbacks, helping the Bengals finish first in the NFL in opponents? starting field position after kickoffs (20.3-yard line average).

You must have missed the reports from training camp where he was consistently hitting 55+ yarders. The Bengals just won't let him try one in a game.

Yeah no kidding. It still sickens me how lucky Cincinnati, that bastion of scUMmyness (I understand not everyone, but still), got by drafting Dalton and Green.

It's not that bad here...they've started coming out of their holes in the ground again, but they'll disappear just as quickly after we beat the shit out of them again this year.
