kicker Mike Nugent suffered a calf injury that puts into doubt his availability for Sunday?s home game against Dallas.
Nugent did not practice Wednesday afternoon. The injury is troubling enough that free agent Josh Brown is being brought in for a tryout, according to a league source.
Brown has played nine seasons in the NFL, the last four with St. Louis, but he has not been with a team this season. He?s made 220 of 272 (80.9 percent) career field goal attempts.
Both former Bengal Neil Rackers and Billy Cundiff also will be in Cincinnati to work out with the team.
Nugent has made all 35 of his extra point attempts this season and is 19-of-23 on field goals. He?s made his last four attempts, including a career-long and club record-tying 55-yard field goal against Oakland on Nov. 25.
Tuesday hits: Nugent kicking again; Mike Johnson, Dre don't go
Geoff Hobson Editor Bengals.com
How tough is Bengals right end Michael Johnson?
Very. Despite hurting his foot late in the first half Sunday against Dallas on his shared sack with left end Carlos Dunlap, he played 75 percent of the snaps, or 54 plays. He was listed with a great toe injury and on Tuesday morning he emerged in the locker room wearing a boot while talking to reporters.
He didn't practice Tuesday and the bad news is the Bengals play Thursday night (8:20 p.m.-Cincinnati's Channel 12 and NFL Network) in Philadelphia. The good news is the Bengals have nine days off until they play in Pittsburgh. Also not working were running back Cedric Peerman (ankle) and kicker Mike Nugent (calf), and they look like they're headed to the inactive list for the second straight week but with hopes alive for the Steelers game.
And who knows about Johnson for Thursday? He hasn't missed a game in his career with 61 straight games.
Very.
All Lewis would say after Tuesday's two-hour workout on the grass fields is that "We'll see," but he indicated the injured guys are improving.
"They're doing well," Lewis said. "Nuge kicked the last few days. It feels pretty good."
Nugent is kicking in rehab but not in practice. Middle linebacker Rey Maualuga (shoulder, knee) went limited Tuesday after going full Monday with just a shoulder issue. Linebackers Dan Skuta (back) and Vontaze Burfict (shoulder) also went limited. Skuta was an upgrade over Monday and Burfict stayed the same.
Kicker Mike Nugent says he's not sure if his right calf is going to be ready for the Steelers.
"It's one of those things you keep trying to go out there and make it feel better every day," said Nugent, who has sat out the last two games while Josh Brown has made all six of his field-goal tries. "It feels better every day. Treatment and time."
He says it's going to depend on how it feels late in the week. Asked if he thinks a competition has broken out with him and Brown, Nugent says that's not a question for him.
"That's a better question for the coaches," he said. "Josh is a great guy in the locker room and is really kicking the ball well and has really helped the team."
Bengals' kicker decision: Mike Nugent or Josh Brown?
By Paul Dehner Jr. | CBSSports.com
December 20, 2012
Cincinnati picked up K Josh Brown off the street two weeks ago when starter Mike Nugent strained his calf in practice. At the time, the move looked to be temporary relief until Nugent healed, and the Bengals hoped Nugent's absence wouldn't cost them a victory.
Brown's arrival turned out to be quite the opposite. He has connected on 6 of 6 field goals, including a 52-yarder against Dallas, and the majority of his kickoffs have gone for touchbacks.
Yet, as Nugent returned to practice this week, the question was raised: Who would be active? And if Nugent isn't ready to go, how long can the Bengals afford to hold on to his roster spot with Brown excelling?
The decision will likely be made Sunday morning, special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons said Thursday. That means both kickers are likely to stay on the 53-man roster at least for the rest of this week. The Bengals have the luxury of being able to carry two kickers because they boast a relatively healthy roster. They wouldn't be forced to activate an injured player just because the decision is unknown on Nugent's return.
Nugent kicked full Wednesday but did not participate in a rainy Thursday practice.
?It's how Mike feels and if he can play,? Simmons said. ?He's kicked this week, so we'll keep taking days to see how he responds.?
Nugent wasn't exactly untouchable before the injury, though he was enjoying a decent season. He hit all 12 kicks inside 40 yards but was 7 of 11 from beyond 40. The situation of a kicker possibly coming in and displacing him would be familiar to Nugent, who was run off due to injury with the New York Jets when his replacment, Jay Feely, stole his job with a magnificent run to close the 2008 season.
From that experience, he's learned to take a different approach to the situation this time around.
?Earlier in my career you sometimes can worry about things that are out of your control,? Nugent said. ?I've learned now that it's completely out of my control. Only thing under my control --- the timeline is even out of my control for me -- but when it comes to working out or rehabbing or strengthening, I think that's the only thing I can really focus on.?
Nugent, Green-Ellis do not practice
12/28/12
After having everyone take part in practice on Wednesday, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Mike Nugent did not participate during Thursday?s session which was held at Paul Brown Stadium.
Nugent, who was full go on Wednesday, did not take part on Thursday as he continues to battle a right calf injury. With the way Josh Brown has kicked in the last three games we couldn?t see them going back to Nugent unless he is 100 percent. Brown also is the hotter kicker right now in making 8 of 9 field goals.
Friday hits: Nugent to IR
Geoff Hobson Editor Bengals.com Follow Me Blog
The Bengals officially turned to kicker Josh Brown for the playoffs Friday when they put Mike Nugent on season-ending injured reserve with a calf issue in his kicking leg and replaced him on the roster with practice squad cornerback Chris Lewis-Harris.
Brown, who signed Dec. 6, the day after Nugent got hurt in a walk-through, has made all but one of 10 field-goal attempts in the three games since and that features last Sunday's 43-yarder with four seconds left in Pittsburgh that gave the Bengals a wild card berth. Brown, 33, in his 10th season, plays in his 12th career playoff game next weekend when the Bengals go to a site to be announced.
The move puts the 30-year-old Nugent into a murky situation after ending his season on IR for the second time in his three seasons with the Bengals. He's the club's franchise free agent, earning a guaranteed $2.7 million salary after setting the team scoring record in 2011 with 132 points, contributing two winning field goals in the final 38 seconds during the playoff run, and being voted by his teammates the Ed Block Courage Award for overcoming the torn ACL in his kicking leg that cut short his 2010 season.
Nugent missed three of his last 12 field-goal tries this season, but he still finished a solid 18-for-21 and 10 days before he got hurt he hit his NFL-long 55-yarder against the Raiders at Paul Brown Stadium that tied the 33-year-old team record.
PFF: Bengals Should Re-Sign Mike Nugent Over Josh Brown
By Jason Garrison on Feb 17
When Mike Nugent was lost for the season with a calf injury, the Bengals brought in Josh Brown, who made some big kicks. Now both are free agents and the Bengals have to decide who they'll re-sign. According to Pro Football Focus, it should be Nugent.
When it comes to re-signing free agents, the decision of whether to re-sign either kicker Mike Nugent or Josh Brown seems pretty minuscule, especially when compared to re-signing defensive end Michael Johnson and offensive tackle Andre Smith. However, the team needs to have a kicker and both Nugent and Brown played well enough to earn a new contract in 2013. So who's it going to be?
According to the folks at Pro Football Focus, the Bengals should re-signing Nugent, who they consider the third best free agent kicker in the league.
Although his field goal percentage of 84.2% doesn't look great, he was perfect on kicks within 40 yards. While he is not one of the few kickers that is extremely accurate at long kicks, his average kickoff distance of 67.8 yards is the best of the free agent group, and that is a number that stays more consistent than field goal percentage. He is coming off an injury which might be a concern, but since the Bengals liked what they saw from Josh Brown, Nugent might be the most readily available good kicker.
Nugent was perfect on field goals within the 20 yard line (one of one) as well as from 20 to 29 yards out (four of four). He was also perfect from 30 to 39 yards out (five of five). He missed two of seven attempts from 40 to 49 yards out (71.4 percent) and was one of two from 50 yards out or greater (50 percent).

Bengals re-sign Mike Nugent
Updated: March 10, 2013
ESPN.com news services
Kicker Mike Nugent signed a two-year contract to return to the Cincinnati Bengals, the team's website reported Sunday.
Nugent hit 19 of 23 kicks last season (82.3 percent) and was perfect inside 40 yards (10 of 10).
He injured his right calf in December but Josh Brown filled the void during Cincinnati's playoff run, converting 11 of 12 field goals (91.7 percent), with his only miss coming on a desperation 56-yarder in Pittsburgh.
Nugent, who received the Bengals' franchise tag last offseason after setting team records with 132 points and 33 field goals in 2011, turned 31 last week while Brown turns 34 next month.
"It's great to be able to come back to a place where you love going to work every day," Nugent told the team's website. "That obviously means a lot and I really think we've got a good thing going with the specialists. We've been together a long time and that not only helps us, but it helps the team, too."
