ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Mike Nugent relishes the opportunity to kick a game-winning field goal. No matter the distance, weather condition or pressure, he wants responsibility to step on the field.
On Sunday in overtime, not long after missing a 34-yard chip shot that would have built a three-score advantage, his desire for a chance increased exponentially.
“I’ve never wanted to be out on a field more once we got into overtime,” Nugent said. “I was like, ‘I have to make it up the mistake that happened early.’ ”
The overtime of redemption spanned every member of the Bengals special teams. Two more special teams penalties ran the team’s total to 11 on the year, and one of them cost three points. A holding call on Alex Smith forced Nugent to re-kick from 34 yards instead of the 24-yard field goal he already made.
