K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

NUGENT MISSES TWICE: The six-point margin of defeat was especially hard on kicker Mike Nugent, who missed field goal attempts of 51 and 45 yards.

Nugent had made 12 of 14 attempts coming into the game but was wide left with both of his attempts. He has now missed three of his last four attempts. Two of those have been from 50+ yards but Nugent wasn?t using that as any excuse. He won the job in the preseason over Dave Rayner in large part due to his ability to hit from long distance.

?I had two shots and you can?t miss two field goals in such a close game, a division game,? said Nugent. ?I just got out there and hit the ball awful on both kicks. I didn?t put them through. I?ve been feeling really comfortable out there and everything felt great but the two that counted I didn?t put them through.?

On both attempts Nuge looked very akward in his form to me...the snap on the second one was high, but the holder got it down in time.

These are the types of games that cause doubt in the coaches mind about their kicker and affects the decision making. Never good......

Nugent hopes tweaks end slump
Posted by jreedy November 13th, 2010

Mike Nugent has missed three of his last four field goals, but feels better going into Sunday?s game against Indianapolis after a good week of practice and reviewing tapes of when he made his first nine.

Said Nugent earlier this week: ?You can get to a certain routine where you almost think it comes automatic. I expected everything to come out without getting right focus.?

All three of Nugent?s misses have gone wide left, which he attributed to his body leaning a little left on the follow through, or kind of like a golf swing. During the preseason, Nugent got a stranglehold on the job with two field goals in the preseason finale against Indianapolis.

Postgame notes: Nugent injury 'doesn't look good'
By GEOFF HOBSON

INDIANAPOLIS - The last thing Mike Nugent did before he suffered what is believed to be a severe knee injury to his kicking leg was perfect.

He executed a perfect onside kick with 2:35 left and the Bengals trailing the Colts, 23-17, Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. But the result was tragic. As the Bengals celebrated Chad Ochocinco?s recovery after linebacker Dan Skuta knocked a Colt off the ball, Nugent was carried to the sideline by two teammates.

?The ball was on its way and I kind of cut back to take a guy and that?s when it happened,? said Nugent, who said he felt the knee go before he made any contact in the scrum.

After the game Nugent was on crutches, and the fear is that he has suffered an ACL and MCL injury.

"It doesn't look good," Nugent said.

Photo finish for Nugent as Pettrey focuses
By GEOFF HOBSON

It is one of the worst moments of his life. But Mike Nugent would love to have the picture if anyone took it.

He didn?t realize it until long after his knee was shredded. But when he finally he saw the television replay of last Sunday?s heartbreak in Indianapolis, he was struck by how tight end Jermaine Gresham and defensive end Frostee Rucker yanked his 186 pounds straight off the ground like a file folder and carried him to the sidelines with his leg dangling limply.

?To think my teammates would do something like that, what a great feeling,? Nugent said despite the pain of a season-ending ACL tear. ?And Frostee wasn?t even on the field when it happened. My girlfriend?s father saw it and said it reminded him of the picture where (Y.A. Tittle) was on his knees on the sidelines all bloodied. He said, ?Talk about a picture saying 1,000 words.? ?

Here?s another 1,000 words with one image. Aaron Pettrey, Nugent?s emergency replacement, is spending the week getting ready to attend his first NFL regular-season game. It also happens to be his first as an NFL kicker after four seasons he followed Nugent at Ohio State.

?The great thing about kicking at Ohio State is the importance they put on special teams,? Nugent said. ?It?s a reason they?re so successful at it. It?s a big part of the program. Plus, when you play there you?re used to playing in front of a lot of people in big, tight games. I think it will carry him a long way.?

Nugent says his surgery is in the next two to three weeks and there have been several time frames tossed at him. Most of them are four to six months; some are as high as eight depending on the procedure. With a year left on his deal, he?ll be rehabbing around the club.

?I want to get back to swinging the leg as soon as possible,? Nugent said. ?But I want to make sure it?s healed. I don?t want to come back too soon and put this team into jeopardy and get hurt during a game.??

Good karma for Nugent
By GEOFF HOBSON

No doubt there is a large chunk of Bengals' fans out there hoping that Shayne Graham becomes the biggest New England sports goat since Bob Stanley, Grady Little or, dare we breathe it, Bill Buckner. But the man who replaced him as the Bengals kicker won't be thinking such bad thoughts when he watches the Patriots play this post season.

Not after Graham called Nugent back on Nov. 15 to see how he was doing The Day After he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his kicking knee.

"That goes a long way with me when a guy does that," Nugent said his week. "That's pretty cool. I think it speaks to the fact that a guy has a lot of character when does something like that."

The good karma seems to be spreading to Nugent's knee, the one connected to the foot that set a club record this season when he hit his first nine field-goal attempts as a Bengal. Five of them took down the Ravens for the Bengals' only points in a 15-10 win and if you don't think the world of a kicker is whacky, consider this:

After missing two field goals against the Jets in the playoffs last season, Graham left Cincinnati in a cloud and free agency and was supposed to be Baltimore's kicker this season. But he lost a training camp battle to Billy Cundiff and Cundiff went on to a Pro Bowl season. Graham re-appeared off the junk heap when New England lost their kicker to injury and Nugent ended up in the training room, his reward for pulling off a perfect on-sides kick that nearly beat the Colts in Indianapolis.

Things have become better. This past Wednesday marked the sixth week since Nugent's surgery. He's got full range of motion and he can start informally kicking a ball next month. But now he may have to get through another obstacle if the collective bargaining agreement expires March 4. A lockout would close down Paul Brown Stadium to the players and take Nugent out of a regimen with Bengals head of rehab Nick Cosgray that has him a little bit ahead of schedule and on track to be kicking in May.

"It's something I just began thinking about," Nugent said. "It's one of those things that just shows the reality of the situation and if it happens, you have to work through it."

Although Cosgray can't work with him without a CBA, he can send him some place that will and he couldn't do much better than Nugent's alma mater of Ohio State. But there's no question Nugent and Cosgray have a good thing going. Cosgray, the former wrestler from Twin Lakes High School in Monticello, Ind., and Nugent, the All-American kicker from Centerville, Ohio, are becoming a pretty good team.

"Three hours a day," Nugent said of his rehab. "Obviously Nick knows what he's doing and I've talked to a lot of people since I've done this who have given me advice. Basically, you let the surgeon do his job and the rest is up to you. Your rehab is all up to you."

Mike Nugent Hopes To Start Kicking In May
by Josh Kirkendall on Mar 3, 2011 3

From offseason workouts, through training camp and preseason, Mike Nugent and David Rayner battled to win the place kicker job last year. Battle seems a bit over dramatic, doesn't it? It's not like we're talking about Mad Mel Max or Sylvester Stallone's uncomfortable arm wrestling movie -- note: the battle in that case was not tearing the optic nerve when rolling our eyes. Nugent converted three of four kicks during the preseason, including multiple 50-yard conversions, winning the job. During the regular season, Nugent converted 78.9% of his field goals; the lowest conversion by a Bengals place kicker dating back to Neil Rackers' 60.7% conversion in 2001.

But let's be fair with Nugent. Of the four missed field goals, two were beyond 50 yards and another was blocked due to protection breakdowns. After all, Nugent won the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September, converting all eight attempts including five against the Baltimore Ravens that earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for week two.

Star-divide

Unfortunately, Nugent's season came to an end after suffering a season-ending ACL injury late in the fourth quarter against the Indianapolis Colts. Nugent, placed on Injured Reserve the following day, suffered the injury while trailing an onside kick into a pile that the Bengals would recover. With the possibility of the owners locking out the players soon, Nugent will head off to Ohio State to resume his rehabilitation. According to Geoff Hobson, Nugent expects to start kicking again in May.

As for the rest of 2010 after Nugent went on IR, the Bengals signed Aaron Pettrey, who converted two of four field goals, and released him after two games. The team settled on Clint S[censored]er, who converted seven straight field goals before missing his first field goal of the year during the team's regular season finale against the Baltimore Ravens. Ironically, S[censored]er had a better field goal percentage (87.5%) than PAT conversion (80%).

Nugent and S[censored]er are both signed through 2011, with Nugent scheduled to make $640,000 in base salary and S[censored]er scheduled to earn $405,000.

It hit Bengals kicker Mike Nugent on Thursday on the way to PBS as the players and owners faced a midnight lockout deadline that has now been extended to Saturday at midnight.

"It makes you realize what a really big business it is," Nugent said. "No one is bigger than the system and everyone wants a piece of the pie."

Both sides have long made plans for a lockout and on Thursday they were close to becoming reality. Nugent, three months removed from his knee reconstruction, has made plans to move his rehab to Ohio State. Since a lockout prevents players from using the facilities and talking to team employees, Nugent assumed Thursday's session would be his last with club rehab director Nick Cosgray.

Earlier Thursday, kicker Mike Nugent and linebacker Rey Maualuga were preparing as if they weren't going to see the place for a long time. Should the owners proceed with a lockout, players will not be allowed to access team facilities or have contact with coaches or other club officials.

"It's a very weird feeling," said Nugent about the possibility that his last day in the facility could come at any time. "It's really going to be weird around March 15 or 23, because that's the day you usually come back and begin offseason workouts. The fact is that if things aren't figured out you can't talk to anybody (with the team except for players). When everything is going normal you kind of forget that it is a business in the end."

Nugent has been splitting time between Cincinnati and Columbus as he rehabs from a right knee injury suffered in the Nov. 14 game against Indianapolis. Nugent tore the MCL, ACL and meniscus and had his surgery done at Ohio State.

More than three months later, Nugent said the MCL and meniscus are healed and the ACL is making progress. While the Bengals training staff was at the Senior Bowl in January and the scouting combine last week, Nugent was working out in Columbus.

Nugent said that he has made progress in coming back from the injury and is ahead of schedule.

Said Nugent about the labor talks: "One day you hear it was a real good discussion and the next you hear that they're not even close. It's good to know that they're still talking but it's also tough to know that the league might shut down for awhile."

Nugent on Tressel
May 30, 2011 | Written by jreedy

With the news about Jim Tressel?s resignation at Ohio State today, Mike Nugent?s sentiments equal those expressed by many former Buckeyes ? shock over what has happened but respect for what Tressel did for them during their careers.

During last week?s Marvin Lewis Golf Classic, I asked Nugent what he thought about what has been a turbulent offseason at his alma mater.

?It?s really tough just seeing the little parts I know about. I wish it never happened,? Nugent said. ?In the end my biggest thing is are you cheating on the field? I don?t think there was any advantage over anyone on the field but I guess why that?s there are rules and from what it looks like rules were broken.?

Nugent arrived on campus the same year Tressel did ? 2001. By the time Nugent?s career ended, he held 22 school records, was the first Buckeye kicker to receive All-America honors and was part of the 2002 National Championship team.

Said Nugent of Tressel: ?I have so much respect for him it?s unbelievable. I hate seeing anything bad. When I was there he?s one of those people that?s so by the book. Someone gave him a tie and there was some kind of kicking connection which he got my sophomore year and he held on to it for three years because he said ?I?m not allowed to give you anything like that.? That?s how strict he is with the rules.?
