CLEVELAND -- Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is going back to school - in a newly created position at the University of Akron.

The school announced Thursday that Tressel has been hired as vice president for strategic engagement and will earn a base salary of $200,000 per year. The job starts May. 1.

University officials say he will work with alumni, community organizations and friends of the school to develop strategies and efforts to help students succeed.

Akron President Luis Proenza says in a statement that Tressel will bring his energy, leadership, passion and compassion to the university.

Tressel was forced to resign last May amid a scandal at Ohio State. He met with Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay about the team's head coaching position but didn't get the job.

Boy do I feel like a sap. Working on my PhD in Higher Education Administration and working my way up through middle management positions at various universities to one day hope that I can make it to that level of administration.

Who knew all I needed to do was commit a minor NCAA violation in order to become qualified. :smash:

?We know that our programs for student success will require tremendous leadership from our staff and support from volunteers throughout the community,? noted Dr. Proenza. ?Jim Tressel will help us engage our alumni and friends in support of our students.?
Tressel spent four years at The University of Akron, receiving his master's degree in education in 1977. He served as assistant football coach and instructor of physical education at UA from 1975 to 1978.
?I have great memories of my time at UA and, more importantly, I feel a real sense of family when I?m on this campus,? said Tressel. ?I am inspired by the vision of President Proenza. I admire what he, the leadership team and the faculty have accomplished over the last decade to build the reputation of the University and lay a strong foundation for student success. I?m looking forward to being part of the spirit of innovation that drives the University of Akron.?

I don't know how much high end administration JT is going to do. Seriously, he has no education or background in it whatsoever. He's been a football coach his entire life.

I see this position as something more akin to the academic version of a celebrity casino greeter. Proenza is a douche, but he's shrewd and always on the make. I think he sees JT as somebody who can schmooze the legislature to send more dollars to Akron.

I know. And I agree with your entire assessment of Proenza and the Municipal University of Akron. I also don't have a problem with a school doing something like this to bring in more $$.

However, it does upset me professionally when I hear that a celebrity will be paid to "develop strategies and efforts to help students succeed", while those of us who have educational training and careers in such work are often undervalued and underpaid by universities.

Make Tressell a VP of Development, or something similar, and say he will be working to advance the university, and I'm fine with it. But don't say he will be doing the work of us professionals who are trained in adult development and learning.

Years ago, Akron hired Gerry Faust... and it was monumentally successful... he paid off in many ways... it was the best marketing with national recognition money couldn't buy... no amount of promotional money can buy you page 1 of newspaper, whether front page or page 1 of sports... nor initial page of any internet site (news, sports, etc..) plus Faust brought in huge revenue for the alumni when he moved from the sidelines to a desk...

If you think of the salary as marketing expense... it's BRILLIANT

Except when he was an athletic director for 8 years...

Which makes him as qualified to be an academic v-p as a vice provost or humanities dean would be to run the athletic department.

Hey, I think it's a good move for him and a great move on Akron's part. I think he'll be highly effective in the role as I've seen it described. My point was to BG that JT is not taking a position away from a normal university administrator and filling that role. We've done the same thing with Kasich and Joyce Beatty. They were in no way qualified to be high level university administrators, but regardless of what their title said, that wasn't why they were hired. They were hired to work the legislature, governor's office, newspaper editorial boards and Fortune 500 boardrooms.

You said he had high end administrative background...I think that is an overstatement. But you are right that he is unlikely to have much of an administrative role here.

Seems to me like he's helped at least hundreds of students succeed, some beyond most people's wildest dreams. the man's been developing college-aged kids for most of his life. I doubt he'll be anything less than highly successful in his new position,
