Typical students tend to have different needs and concerns than football players.

Working one-on-one with student athletes in a team/family environment with the control a coach has over his players is a world of difference from strategic planning and program design and implementation that will impact thousands of autonomous students while trying to get faculty buy-in. Just as I would have no business being a college football coach because of a lack of training and experience, Tressel lacks the background to be considered an academic administrator.

Of course, as Ord has pointed out, this is not what Tressel will actually be doing for Akron, despite what the university wants to say. He will be a celebrity development officer (i.e. fundraiser). Nothing wrong with that and I bet he will do a great job.

Then again, I'd be willing to take back my doubts if Tressel could tell me which of Chickering's seven psychosocial vectors of development are most prominent for traditional college age students and what influences they exert on learning; how an individual typically moves from Perry's dualistic to pluralistic cognitive frames of reference; or how a university of Akron's size, mission, and student body best achieves Sanford's balance of challenge and support in order to encourage student development.

In support to my post yesterday... someone else agrees

"Strictly in terms of money, this is the best $200,000 the university has ever spent. Tressel will generate 10 times that amount during his first year."

Using Dyer to defend your point is never a good idea. However, it is money well spent and they will get more back. I agree with a previous post that his title should just be Fundraiser.

I thought we were an autonomous collective?
