Walt Harris and Mike Belotti come to mind. Many may not remember, but Glen Mason was also in the mix.

I remember everyone calling for Gruden. Not sure the tOSU admins ever seriously looked at him, but the fan base suggested as much. Also Stoops.

I think if Mason was offered he would have jumped on it. Was Tress the first offer? Gruden, Stoops, Belotti sound like the usual names that float around but never had interest or received interest. I do remember Walt Harris getting a serious look. Nice bullet dodging there.

Mason, Gruden, Belotti, Pagac, Spielman, and Willingham either were contacted or interviewed according to Sports Illustrated article from January 2001

Ohio State's other finalist was Minnesota's Glen Mason, a former Ohio State player and a member of the same Buckeyes coaching staff as Tressel for two years. Mason interviewed earlier Wednesday. Before flying back to Minnesota, he told reporters that his visit went well.
Geiger told Jeff Logan, a member of the advisory committee, that Mason was "devastated" when told that Tressel would be the new coach.

Tressel was expected to sign a multiyear contract paying him in excess of $1 million a year. His Youngstown State contract, which was to run out in June, gave him a base salary of $88,500 and a $20,000 annual stipend to also serve as athletics director. For winning a national championship, Tressel received an extra $5,000. Others who either interviewed or spoke with Ohio State officials about the job included Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden, Oregon coach Mike Bellotti, current Buckeyes assistant head coach Fred Pagac, former Ohio State and NFL linebacker Chris Spielman and Stanford head coach Tyrone Willingham.

Thanks gracelhink - here is another contemporary article which I summarized in the Hoke thread. Particularly interesting is the order of events outlined on a critical week beginning Monday January 15th.

Bottom line take from the article, those who sometimes still state the coaching search for tOSU as one with JT as a late evolving consideration don't reflect the order depicted in that article. JT may have even been the first, and certainly one of the first considered. Gruden after Belotti and/or Tressel, and Mason possibly given an interview after all of the above.
