Jet's so serial: PSU = RIVALS!!!1!!11!

PSU could have grown into a fringe rivalry. They could have parlayed their success as an independent into being a big dog in the league and a major hindrance to Ohio state. They could have been a game that is circled every year.

Instead they settled for mediocrity (among worse things) like most of the league.

That is why they are regarded as less of a rival than Illinois which is strictly an ancient trophy that no one cares about.

Again, let me say that if someone wants to call it a rivalry so be it. I will continue to call them "our bitch".

Can't they be both?

I still don't know how 13-16 is making them our bitch...I guess if you parse data...but you can do that with any team...like Michigan. What is there record the last 10 years vs. OSU? 1-9? Does that make them any less of a rival?

I'll ask the question again...what constitutes a rivalry?

For me it's geographical location...that plays into it.
Fan interaction...personally has been one of the most passionate in terms of arguments I've ever had. Even over Michigan.
Competition does play a part in it...and PSU has been competitive with OSU (13-16).
History plays into it and while not on par with the history that OSU/UM has it still dates back to the 50's.

Is it even close to UM/OSU...god no. But saying they are a rival doesn't take away from any other rivalry IMHO.

Well, unlike Penn State, Illinois were competitive against us going 11-12 against us from 1983-2007

This is your opinion.

There is a reason this game is typically played as a prime time game...

When is the last time OSU played Illinois at night?

once again you confuse rival with a game people like to watch. I wasn't suggesting Illinois was a big game.

Rivalries are earned as is respect. They do not command respect, contend for the league, or upset osu with any annual frequency.

They are also fond of traditions that they borrowed or outright stole. I take that back, their pick six University tradition is unrivaled.

Illinois has lost 35 more times to OSU that they have won.

How is that game a rivalry? I don't know many fans at all that care about them. But they are considered a rival...

Well, for one thing, we used to play them the last game of every season. This was a long time ago, so you are right, not many people remember. Rivals are born from tradition. Not from coming into a league and thinking you are going to dominate it, and then whining about reffing when you don't.

Penn State is a big game...that is why it's played in prime time.
