Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

I don't know how an Ohio State fan could root for Duke, unless they were playing against TSUN.
Duke or Michigan? Michigan or Duke?

In that scenario, I'm rooting for the strength of the conference, so I'm rooting for [strike]Michigan[/strike] Duke to lose.

My friend who is fans of Ohio State football, Duke basketball, and Red Sox baseball became a fan of the Red Sox in 2004, at least so far as I can tell. Previous to that, he was a huge fan of the Marlins (back in the 90s), except for way back in the 70s and 80s when we were growing up, when he was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds.

Now Duke ... as far as I can tell, he became a fan of Duke basketball in 1995 when Coach K College Basketball was released for the SEGA Genesis. He became more serious about his role as a Duke fan when he moved out of his moms house and split an apartment with two other dudes, one of whom was a North Carolina basketball fan (who also, coincidentally, was born and raised in Ohio and had no allegiance to UNC whatsoever).

It's really, really sad. Seriously. Don't be like these people.

That is one of the cardinal rules of sports fandom. College sports don't exist independent of their schools, and picking and choosing sports from different schools is for the 20-year-old Robs of the world. Frankly, anyone who follows OSU football out of anything but love and admiration for The Ohio State University as a whole, is probably also a bandwagon fan IMO.

Best comment in the whole discussion.

I guess nobody has stopped to consider that this guy is 20 years old and Ohio State's men's basketball team has spent 20% of that time on probation. It's kinda hard to blame anybody for not being a fan of Ohio State basketball when they were forming their rooting interests during a time when the program couldn't keep its nose clean.

How do you just turn it on and off based upon sport? That's what I don't get. Does Across the Field suddenly annoy you because it's being played at an Ohio State-Duke basketball game?

I have a list of certain schools that I like and don't like in football and basketball, but I'd root for Ohio State to absolutely plunger rape them in any sport. If you're a true fan of a school--alumni or non-alum--then you root for the institution in all sports and in things other than athletics. Otherwise, you really are a bandwagon fan/t-shirt alum etc. As noted above, the only exception is for multiple alma maters.

Hopefully, we've learned our lesson about letting Miamites run an Ohio State program.

Its not Ohio State basketball and/or Ohio State football. Its not a buffet. Its Ohio State. My feeling is take it or leave.

Yes, it's pretty obvious that TheRob is a bandwagoner as this "split loyalties" based upon what sport your watching is garbage. I don't know how an Ohio State fan could root for Duke, unless they were playing against TSUN.

You cheer for nuclear explosions. Short of that, you root for the conference. But only because Tressel said so (see: Tressel quote re: NoD).

I'm 19 and I can remember the Final Four as my earliest memories of Ohio State basketball. I've seen a lot of bad years but I have always loved Ohio State basketball.

I guess I'd say that people who are raised to root for Duke in basketball and Ohio State in football have front runners as parents, but it's not totally their fault for liking the two teams.

However if you grow up and choose to like Duke in basketball and Ohio State in football you might be a front runner yourself.

The degree of front runnerness depends on if you like the Browns or Bengals in football or a team like the Cowboys or Patriots or whoever. I was actually a Cowboys fan when I was a little kid because the Browns didn't have a team, but I didn't really enjoy the NFL that much during that time and when the Browns came back I became a huge Browns fan because it's my home team (well close to home, better than being a bungles fan ).

I have a friend who likes the Red Sox (he liked them before they were good), Ohio State, the Packers, and the Houston Rockets. I guess he just randomly chose those teams when he was little, and I would say that's okay.

Overall, I feel like if you like a college team, you should probably like the whole athletic department as a whole. It's like one entity. Because usually when you like two different college teams, it's because one is sick in football and one is sick in basketball...And that IS okay, but if you told me that, I'd probably say you're a front runner. If you liked Ohio State in football and say Maryland or something in basketball I'd be cool with that.

idk really, but I'd say yes it's OK to like different schools. I surely wouldn't trade Ohio State teams for anyone though.

Obviously football is the main course (what kind of buffet expects you to eat the same portions of every offering?), but I'm not seeing separate forums for UNC basketball and FSU baseball up there. And since OSU doesn't have any professional sports, I don't see a problem with a robust "other" subforum.

I don't think that really has anything to do with this. Just because there are more posts in the football thread than the others doesn't mean people are rooting for other teams in those sports. In my case, I very closely follow OSU football and basketball, and the other sports I'll watch if they're on TV and i'll sometimes check out the scores. I absolutely hate baseball, so I'm not going to closely follow our team, but there is no way in hell I would ever root for another baseball team. If I'm at a Buckeye baseball game, or it's on TV, I'm going to root like hell for OSU.

I'm late to this party. Apologies.

No, it's not OK. You're all Buckeye or you aren't Buckeye at all. There are teams that I like to watch but I'm not a fan of theirs and never will be.

:oh:

Another concise, yet precise, post. If you're a Buckeye, you're a Buckeye. Not a Buckeye in November and a Blue Devil in March.
