Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, hadn't seen this thread until now. I've struggled with my "fandom" recently. Since I have not lived on Ohio for over 10 years, and more importantly, because I attend a University in Georgia, I have wondered about being a "fan" of Ohio State athletics.

My personal feelings are that the Woody Hayes, Jim Tressel, hard work, and being humble are what I believe in. I think this is encompassed in the Ohio State football program, and that is why I cheer for them. The players at Ohio State are there for a reason. If it were financially, realistically possible, I too would be at Ohio State for a reason. There is not a lot I would not do to be able to say I graduated from that school. That's how much it means to me, just being from Ohio. Unfortunately, my life path has not yet lead me to attending Ohio State, the University of my dreams. But that's ok, because every autumn Saturday I am again a Buckeye.

I am a student at Kennesaw State University, so I will always cheer the Owls because they are my fellow students and friends. Because this is my school, I will show my support for them first in all sports. But I will always and forever be a Buckeye. Because that's where I'm from. I know where I came from.

And we don't have a football program yet. :sneaky:
isnt it mandatory to (own/carry) a guy in kennesaw?

Does it?

It's my fault that the teams I root far are successful?

If I had said I'm an Ohio State football fan and a Virginia Commonwealth basketball fan would you have made the same statement?

Seriously, though...how does that even remotely suggest being a bandwagon fan...

By the looks of your profile, you are 19 years old, won't hit 20 until the end of the year.

I think I see where JC is coming from in this bandwagon angle.

Ok-theoretical question for you-or anyone else on the board. How do expansion teams fit in for pro fandom? I hate hockey and could care less about the Blue Jackets, but is it cool for an NHL fan in Columbus to switch allegiances to the Blue Jackets b/c they are local? I don't know.
I do have a buddy from East Texas who roots for the Titans b/c they used to be the Oilers, and still roots for them even though the Texans are now in Houston-and says that isn't unusual in his area.
nashville has pred wings.

columbus has blue wings/red jackets. (and some penguins fans, though in the nhl context that is only an issue every two years or if both teams make the cup finals).

you also see a heavy sprinkling of blackhawk fans and a few sabres fans who go to/are jacket fans...

I went to Ohio State for undergrad and Akron for grad school. When they play, I cheer for Ohio State. But I show enormous support for the Zips and their athletic programs. I also cheer for anyone that plays Notre Dame in football and anyone that plays Duke or Kentucky in basketball.

Other considerations come into play as well when you talk about family members or friends attending other universities.

But, for me, Ohio State is still #1 and I think you have to have a #1 university.

First of all, I don't think anyone is really asking if it's okay to root for another team other than your "designated" team. That would be a ridiculous discussion...

Secondly, what's the reason behind your claim that everyone MUST have a "#1 University"?

...I follow Ohio State in football, basketball, soccer, and baseball...not as in depth in anything after basketball but I still pay attention. With that said, if Ohio State played Duke in basketball I would root for Duke.

Why? Not because "Duke is good. So I root for them" believe me, they've been far from bandwagon status for nearly a decade...I haven't been proud of anything they've done for years...but because I was raised a Duke fan...by a man who ATTENDED Ohio State, has brothers who attended and PLAYED for Ohio State and lived in North Carolina for long enough to pick up a Duke allegiance simply because he loved the sport of basketball...I root for the Blue Devils...

Even though the line is sometimes blurred, there is still a difference between college and professional sports team. I am a fan of Ohio State, the university and its athletic department. If I were just a fan of Ohio State football, I'm treating them as a glorified professional team, not as part of a university.

To cheer for two different universities based upon which sport they are playing is sports bigamy and sports bandwagon at its worst. When is the last time you heard someone say they were a fan of Indiana football and Penn State basketball? Never. Why? Because they both suck. You only hear about people liking Ohio State/Notre Dame/USC/Michigan football and Duke/Kentucky/Syracuse/UCLA basketball. Pure bandwagon BS there and it is definately not Ok.

I could care less about any Duke sport besides basketball...and if that means I'm treating them as a "glorified professional team" then so be it...but I don't see how it's reasonable to see it that way...

... and to use the logic that "you can't REALLY be a fan because nobody who roots for these so-called crappy teams says stuff like that" is pretty lame...and definitely does not hold much validity...

Do you honestly believe there aren't people out there who root for a "main team" as well as for teams that you think "suck"?

...some people have legitimate ties to a certain program for whatever reasons...

After I graduate the school I'm attending now, I'm going post-grad to OU...I'll watch a ton of OU football a lot of OU basketball...and definitely a bunch of OU baseball and root for the Sooners in all of those games...but if Ohio State ever played them...in anything, I'd be the only guy wearing ALL Ohio State gear in the OU student section...

It seems to me that anyone who accuses someone of being a bandwagon fan...or claims that having 2 "#1 teams" from 2 different sports diminishes the university...is only trying to make themselves feel superior in some way...

Not making an accusation here but do you consider yourself a "better" Ohio State fan than myself?

I like the CBJ and I actually see more of their games than I do Red Wings games due to stupid ass TV laws that need to be stricken from the books. Anyway, I guess I am a secondary CBJ fan until the Wings come into town and/or are playing on TV when I can watch them.

Wait wha??!?!?!?!?

Duke has been a perennial top-ten team this entire fucking decade and for most of the past 20 years.

That very statement along with your age as you put it in your profile makes you into the quintessential bandwagon fan.

If you would root for Duke over the Buckeyes in hoops, yes, that is wrong.

Because...why? Because you say so? I don't get it...

...what exactly is "wrong" about that?

I'm 20 yes...but I've been watching Ohio State football and Duke basketball since I was born (or young enough to know what I was watching and who I was rooting for)

Are you REALLY claiming that fandom is only determined by length associated with a specific team? What does age have to do with my validity as a fan?

I think you've missed the point of that post...

If I were going to root for a team simply because they were good, Duke wouldn't be the top choice...and probably BARELY in the top 5 based upon the last decade...

I've been thoroughly disappointed in their inability to show toughness and inconsistency throughout the late stages of the season. 2001 was the last time anyone could really say Duke was an OBVIOUS Final Four team...

...even Chris Duhon's senior season they snuck in the back door to the Final Four and got handled by UConn...

It [censored]es me off when folks who I consider ignorant Duke fans boast about how dominant Duke has been and has always been and how nobody can hold their own against them...when anyone who truly follows the team knows just how many BLATANT weakness they have year after year, starting with the fact that they've not had a solid PG presence since Jason Williams (I'll give Duhon a B+ in that regard)...

...they recruit the "non-athletes" because they're coachable and play Krzyzewski-ball...and that gets them a perennial bid to the NCAA tournament and wins them 25+ games MOST seasons...

...but if anyone were to truly watch Duke basketball for the past Decade they wouldn't associate themselves with them to the extent that I do without trying to denounce their fandom...I know if I wasn't a Blue Devil basketball fan deep down I would've rescinded my status as fan when they lost to VCU in the tourney a few years back...

Oh yea...

You think scUM fans are classless? UNC fans are right up there...but with a country twang...

*sigh*

Why is it so important for some people to denounce others' credibility as fans?

Dude it's pretty obvious you've been a bandwagon fan of Duke since you've watched basketball. Instead of clearing it up your statements denying the fact must make it look worse for you.

...good to know "civil discussion" is a staple around these parts :roll2:

This:

"Dude it's pretty obvious you've been a bandwagon fan of Duke since you've watched basketball. Instead of clearing it up your statements denying the fact must make it look worse for you."

...makes absolutely no sense...

...and suggests that since you have really don't have anything to say you'd rather take a jab and post a cute little picture and be on your way

and

This:

"1. No bandwagon[censored] ever acknowledges himself as one.
2. [censored] Duke. "

Is just silly...

From the looks of these posts a bandwagon fan is anyone who:

1) Roots for a good team that isn't Ohio State.
2) Anyone who isn't over a specific age. (25? 30?)
3) Denies they are a bandwagon fan.

If anyone would like to say something worth talking about I'll be around to respond...

...but I'll gladly take my ball and go home (in regards to this thread) if we're all gonna act 5 years old...:wink2:

No jo4h. It's not mandatory to own/carry a guy. Thankfully. :wink2:

In the eighties, a law was passed in the city that every head of household was required to own a firearm and ammunition. The next year it was amended for those that didn't want to own a firearm, convicted felons, those who couldn't afford it, those with mental or physical disabilities that prevent them from owning a firearm, and outraged bandwagon fans. Household burglaries went from 65 to 26 to 11 in the subsequent years.
