Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

I'm a Cameron Crazie first when it comes to basketball, been following Duke for YEARS...and Blue Devil basketball is the only thing that comes remotely close to Buckeye football for me...

As an Ohio State alumnus this kind of fandom bugs the shit out of me. This isn't the NFL and the NBA. Ohio State football and Ohio State basketball are both part of The Ohio State University. The same reality applies to Duke basketball and Duke football, both of which can suck my scarlet and gray ass.

    Duly noted.

I consider myself a fan of NCAA Football, NCAA Basketball and MLB Baseball first and foremost. With that said, Ohio State football is "my" TEAM...because my dad and his brothers all went to Ohio State. (Anyone know the name Melvin Nowell?...probably not.) I still follow and enjoy Ohio State basketball because I love NCAA Basketball and Ohio State is my primary school. On the other hand, Duke is a secondary school that I follow as my dad lived in North Carolina for a while and has associates that still live there (funny enough UNC fans) and I've been handed down that fandom so to speak. I don't follow Duke football. 1) because they suck and 2) because Duke isn't a primary school of mine.

If I could stand the NFL or the NBA I would probably be a Hawks/Falcons fan...

I'm a diehard Atlanta Braves fan...I grew up in Atlanta, my first game at Fulton County stadium was when I was 10 weeks old...been to probably 150 in Fulton County and the Ted...

Atlanta and Georgia are my states...so if fandom was based upon that I'd be a Georgia Tech fan (I like 'em, but don't really root for 'em)

Anyway...I've heard it said that I'm blasphemous as a fan from more than a handful of folks...but it doesn't take away from my fandom for any of those TEAMS.

Nope, it is OK to like multiple teams.. Buckeye Football is #1 to me, I am an OSU alum and worked for the football team. Having said that, I grew up in Colorado and LOVE the CU Buffaloes and the CSU Rams, my uncles played football at those two schools when I was little and grew up following those programs.

Basketball wise, I love OSU Basketball! I do have to admit that my second team for college hoops is DUKE! Long before I attended OSU I started to year in and year out pick them to win in my bracket and year in and year out they fail.... They will win it one of these years and validate my constant failure to win my march madness pool in past years.

I now live in South Carolina and fortunately none of the teams here are worthy of my attention, though I keep hearing about SEC speed...There are a boatload of Buckeyes in Charleston so I can continue to bleed Scarlet and Gray in a state full of Cocks fans....

    This argument again?

Like it or not, big time college athletics are a LOT like pro sports in the way they're marketed to potential fans. Especially in a day and age where most people have access to complete and timely information on most any team and can watch most of the major ones on live TV multiple times a year, you're going to have people with varying allegiances.

Furthermore, most of these people (I was one of them) formed these allegiances as a child. When you're 10 years old, you're not thinking about supporting "dear old alma mater", you're rooting for the team that you like or the team that your friends like or the team that has a player or coach or uniforms that you like.

In a way though I'm glad I gave up UK basketball when they got rid of Tubby Smith. At least I don't have to defend my Buckeye credentials every winter when this stupid zombie argument emerges from the crypt again. Truth be told, I hardly even watch college basketball anymore. If I do watch, it'll be Ohio State or the postseason games. The NBA is where it's at though.

OK, I've split this off from the Big Ten Expansion thread. Those who want to can have at it here. I know this argument has taken place countless times before, it's probably tucked away in some other threads somewhere. I couldn't find any obvious candidates for a merge, so it looks like this thing is getting its own thread now. Enjoy.

Who was that guy that used to have the years for tOSU football titles and Ky bball titles in his signature? He should weigh in here.

I also have a vague recollection of a 'Cuse hoops fan, but I think he left the board to stalk Carly Patterson full-time,

    Of course it's "OK"

The real question is - who do you root for when those teams meet. For example, I'm from Minnesota originally. As a consequence, and like JLB says, when I was forming my interest in sports, I wasn't thinking about my eventual alma mater, I was thinking "Hey, I like the Vikings, North Stars, Gophers and Twins."

Well, here I am an Ohio State fan. Not just a fan, it's my alma mater. And, I still like the Gophers, Vikings, and Twins (I even have a bit of a soft spot for the Dallas Stars, but not enough to consider myself a fan of them). But.. when Ohio State plays Minnesota... there is simply no conflict at all. I want Ohio State to beat the living shit out of the Gophers.

Gotta go with Jake here, liking OSU football and Duke basketball reeks of bandwagonfuckdom.

I don't suppose I care if someone has some other teams that they "kinda follow". But your either a Buckeye fan or not. If you are, I don't know how you could root for another team to beat them.

Either you're with us, or you're against us.

Kinda like the Red China argument Pre-Nixon. I love Buckeye football, but I've got time to kill watching other teams too. The rest of the world of football does exist.

I tape/record/Tivo Notre Dame games. If they get beat I watch and store them. If they win I don't watch them and delete.

I wouldn't root for Stanford unless they were playing Notre Dame or USC. I wouldn't root for USC unless they were playing Notre Dame, Alabama or Miami. I root for Oklahoma when they play Miami. I have six nieces who gradumuated from Florida so I have to kinda root for the gators and when the choice is Tennessee or Alabama that isn't difficult. I'd root for BYU over Oklahoma and Notre Dame.

I'm trying to think of a time/place situation where I might root for Notre Dame -- maybe if their football team were playing Duke's basketball team -- other than that I can't think of a single scenario where I would.
