Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

This argument again?

I didn't start this thread. I made a comment in a different thread, as evidence in the quote in my post. It was moved here by someone else and posted as a new thread.

1) OSU - first and foremost - birth right; child #1 grad plus alma mater of numerous relatives
2) Akron U - my alma mater - did not have the means to go the big time
3) Rutgers - child #2 grad
4) TBD - child 3 in decision process
5) Cinci - OSU JV team; alma mater of numerous friends
6) MAC schools - I love the underdogs; I include YSU & BW in this tier
7) Big 10 schools not playing OSU that week... plus Appalachian State

What a goofball concept. Of course it's OK.

If you think otherwise, wait until your kids attend other colleges, especially if they play sports there. Then you'll see it's not only OK, but inevitable.

In that case you have a reason to root for those schools/teams. I wasn't talking about that situation at all.

The heading of this thread was written by someone else, and is broader than my initial post that prompted it.

Well, that's the risk you run when a thread goes way off topic. If you have a suggestion for a better thread title please let us all know.

I have a bud that is a fan of OSU football, Duke basketball, and Red Sox baseball. Don't be that guy.

I work with a guy who loves Penn State football and Pitt basketball, which fits his love of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Phillies.

He's a PSU grad, btw.

Take it up with the people who turned the Big Ten expansion thread into a debate about ACC basketball. It wasn't me. :wink2:

If I had a relative that went to scum I would support them while they were there, but there is no way in hell I would turn my back on OSU. That just makes me sick.

My back gets turned on the ex relative, not OSU.

I have more respect for a fan of a team I hate than one of those sumbitches that change sides.

Thats why I hated Jag fans for so long when I first moved down here. I can't tell you how many times I heard the "well when we lived in northern city x we were team x fans but now we're here and we're Jag fans" bullshit.

Fuck that. You're in for a penny your ass is in for a pound. I've been a Reds fan for nearly 40 fucking years now, the first 10 they were good and I was too young to enjoy it. They have been good for about 2 of the last 30. What am I gonna do go down to foot locker and buy a bunch of Yankee shit? Fucking might as well grab some USC and Da U gear while you are at it, that's how their fanbase rolls.

separation of college and pro

To me it is a separation of college and pro that is key in this discussion. For Example:

I graduated from the University of Toledo... 3 times... over 8 years... still advise an undergraduate org there... and sit on a board at the university, but last season in Cleveland I was at the game in all my Buckeye gear and glory, tailgated with all my buddies (and my wife) who were decked out in their Midnight Blue and Gold and took all their crap the whole time. Didn't bother me, in fact I loved it. Nothing can touch tOSU football for me, I was raised going to the shoe on Saturdays and both my parents are alums. Any other allegiance would be traitorous to me. I dig buckeye basketball but do not live and die by it, will root for them in the tourney and if I happen catch them on the tube. There are no additional college sports in my world. Considering myself an actual fan of any other college teams is out of the question with minor exception of generally pulling for UT in the MAC (lets face it, MAC schools don't really count in Big 10 country, I go to at least one game at the shoe per year and have not been to a game at the glassbowl in 5 or 6 years but drive past it a few times a month). This college sports allegiance is a hard-line thing in my mind.

Then there are the pros... I don't know anyone under 30 who's true allegiance really lies to their home state teams. Sure I have a bunch of buddies who claim to be Browns/Cavs fans, but the truth of the matter is they are Browns/LeBron fans and were either drinking the Chicago or Detroit NBA Kool-aid during their formative years.

I am a perfect example of this, growing up I was a Jazz (Stockton and Malone), Raiders (Bo knows), and Reds pro fan. I still follow the jazz, but am more likely to be caught watching a Cavs game (the LeBron effect). The Raiders organization coupled with Fantasy Football has nearly destroyed any allegiance to a NFL team and I find myself following my individual fantasy players. Baseball is dead to me, my last Reds game was their last homegame before the 94 strike and my next foray into MLB was last season when I took my son to an Indian's game where they handed out Victor Martinez bobble-heads the week after they traded him away in a salary dump.

So my take on these things... with pro sports go ahead and whore yourself out, everyone under 30 does it. With College sports you have one primary team and are allowed a minor team in the event that you/your kid goes there. I do not endorse the Buckeye Football and Duke/UNC Basketball and Whoever is good at College Baseball and UConn Ladies hoops, ect sort of fandom.

Probably stupid and absolutely a wast of time, but that is my read on the matter.

There seem to be two debates going on here:

1. Is it ok to root for more than one college team?

Of course it is. I went to Ohio State for undergrad and Akron for grad school. When they play, I cheer for Ohio State. But I show enormous support for the Zips and their athletic programs. I also cheer for anyone that plays Notre Dame in football and anyone that plays Duke or Kentucky in basketball.

Other considerations come into play as well when you talk about family members or friends attending other universities.

But, for me, Ohio State is still #1 and I think you have to have a #1 university.

2. Is it ok to have a #1 college team in basketball different from your #1 college team in football?

Absolutely not. And I say that without exception. Even though the line is sometimes blurred, there is still a difference between college and professional sports team. I am a fan of Ohio State, the university and its athletic department. If I were just a fan of Ohio State football, I'm treating them as a glorified professional team, not as part of a university.

To cheer for two different universities based upon which sport they are playing is sports bigamy and sports bandwagon at its worst. When is the last time you heard someone say they were a fan of Indiana football and Penn State basketball? Never. Why? Because they both suck. You only hear about people liking Ohio State/Notre Dame/USC/Michigan football and Duke/Kentucky/Syracuse/UCLA basketball. Pure bandwagon BS there and it is definately not Ok.

Never mind.

The Reds have sucked some long term donkey wang to be sure but they have a ways to go to reach Clipperdom or even Bungledom.
