Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

It's always interesting to me to see what parts of the country favor pro or NCAA sports. Ohio is one of the rare states that likes both - along with Cali and Texas.

Georgia prefers NCAA sports to anything - but right now is really big on the Falcons and the Hawks.

Florida is an interesting state, Miami in particular since they can't get hardly any support for Da U - but LOVE the Phins.

Then there are just some inexplicable fans like bn27s raider affinity or mine for the buckeyes (declared myself a buckeye at age 6 in 1989 living in pa (nd, psu, Md country) before I could name more than 3 players annually) raised by diehard Spartans. These seem to be a byproduct of early dementia.

Yeah, having you and BN27 around sure makes me think that people having varied allegiances is a good thing. :roll1:

I could've sworn there was a thread on this very subject before. I root for Ohio State, in all sports, first and foremost. I'm also a Youngstown State fan, since I was born and raised in Youngstown (well, born there and grew up in Girard and Austintown). Still, I rooted for Ohio State when they played YSU...I had no problem rooting against the Penguins in that instance, and Ohio State is the only team that I put over YSU. I also root for Air Force seeing as I served 26 years in it, but I also liked them before I joined (always rooted for them against Army and Navy). But, although I'm a fan of Air Force, I was pissed big time when they beat Ohio State in the Liberty Bowl. The other team I root for is Hawaii, because, well, I live in Hawaii. But if they should ever play the Buckeyes, you know who I'll be rooting for.

If had to choose between rooting for Ohio State and rooting for my other three teams combined, it would be a decision that would take about a pico-second...

I left Ohio when I was 10 years old and have always associated my roots as an Ohioan with OSU so my loyalty is probably more overblown that it should be.

I also went to many schools at night and on weekends while I was in the military to complete my degrees. Wright State, Kansas State make up the majority of my undergrad. Jacksonville University my MBA.

I pay passing attention to Wright State hoops(I was there when they first opened the Nutter Center, love that place), K-State can suck dick and die for all I care.

JU is like a minor league team compared to OSU. I am a booster and care what happens to all their sports but they aren't in the same weight class as OSU. I know they played a couple of years ago and there is always the off chance of a basketball tourney match up but it would be like a #1 vs #16 thing. I hope JU makes a good showing but I damn sure don't want them upsetting OSU.

The concept of rooting for multiple major DI schools based on sport is nucking futs to me but to each his own I guess (not really).

It was the game in which Lighty broke his foot last season. I hold you personally responsible.

This argument again?

Furthermore, most of these people (I was one of them) formed these allegiances as a child. When you're 10 years old, you're not thinking about supporting "dear old alma mater", you're rooting for the team that you like or the team that your friends like or the team that has a player or coach or uniforms that you like.

I think I chimed in the last time this topic popped up, so time for me to chime in again since I am one of those people.

But I am just like you mentioned. I grew up in Cleveland and am a Cleveland sports fan and also an Ohio State fan. But I didn't go to Ohio State... I went to Ohio University. So I have 2 favorite college teams. In football I really root for Ohio State more as I am more of a football fan (plus it didn't help that Ohio won 3 games in my 4 years in Athens). But for basketball I am more of an Ohio fan. When I went there it was the Gary Trent years and Ohio is more known for their basketball teams than there football teams.

Of course it's "OK"

The real question is - who do you root for when those teams meet. For example, I'm from Minnesota originally. As a consequence, and like JLB says, when I was forming my interest in sports, I wasn't thinking about my eventual alma mater, I was thinking "Hey, I like the Vikings, North Stars, Gophers and Twins."

This is the root of all things and it comes up again this year  To me my alma mater comes first. But I am just not that angry if my alma mater loses :wink2:

I've been an OSU fan my whole life, but Cooper didn't see fit to offer me a scholarship to play football so I went to the school that did so they will always have a place in my heart as well. Of course I could never want a MAC school to beat OSU so I just want a good showing.
My brother-in-law's wife's brother (confused?) played at Penn St. The other sister's Columbus native husband turned his back on OSU and is now a PSU superfan. It's actually annoying being around him when he watches a PSU game because he takes it very seriously. I happened to be around him for a blowout win for PSU and he wouldn't leave the tv to put his kids to bed until the game was over even though they were up by 20+ points. I would have loved to be there for the OSU game since it would have been a good laugh.
If I had a relative that went to scum I would support them while they were there, but there is no way in hell I would turn my back on OSU. That just makes me sick.
