Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

I'm a diehard Ohio State football fan* Same thing for basketball!!!**

*except for the late 70s and early 80s when I was a USC fan. From '83 to '93, it was all about MY Canes, then my interests wandered north for awhile GO NOLES!. Anyway, it's been all Go Bucks since the end of the 2002 season, except when I'm rooting for the latest SEC champion.

**just a couple exceptions. God I loved those Tark UNLV teams in the late 80's, right up until the Dookies stole my heart when they upset UNLV. I flirted with UK and UCLA throughout the late 90's, but I was there for my
Buckeyes when they went to that '99 Final Four. After that, I had a brief fling with Carolina, but I was back in the fold the minute Greg Oden signed his letter of intent. Good times....good times.

If I root for a synchronized swimming team, it would be OSU's.

We seem to be getting caught up here on degree of support. I'll freely admit that I don't follow the Buckeye gymnastics team with nearly as much vigor or cash as the basketball or football team. But I also don't support any other university in gymnastics with the same level of support I show Ohio State. That's the issue here: Ohio State above all others.

I guess nobody has stopped to consider that this guy is 20 years old and Ohio State's men's basketball team has spent 20% of that time on probation. It's kinda hard to blame anybody for not being a fan of Ohio State basketball when they were forming their rooting interests during a time when the program couldn't keep its nose clean.

True, but given both his age and how he has described his support of Duke, it's pretty obvious that he's only for Dook because they are good. Very convenient that he likes Duke, don't you think?

That's like all of a sudden becoming a Yankees fan in 1996 or a Red Wings fan in 1994-ish. Or a Bulls fan in 1990. Yes I do realize it's slightly different with professional sports teams, but I think the point remains.

Maybe we're all condemning his decision of Duke because of the success Duke has had over the span of his lifetime, but his own statements haven't exactly helped him. I think what will define his fandom is how ardent a fan of Duke's he is when CRY-zewski finally retires or goes on to fail in the NBA and whoever replaces him at Duke can't keep the momentum going.

I think it largely depends on if you are an alum of Ohio State or not. If you are, then you go for Ohio State no matter what, you are more culturally in tune with what the Buckeyes have been and followed more than just the sports.

I am not, I grew up in Columbus but no longer live there and graduated from San Diego State. I am a big fan of Buckeye football and basketball and would root for their baseball program if it were carried this far west of the Mississippi, but its not. I will support all Aztec sports and if/when SDSU plays OSU I am going to be a winner and loser either way and just pray for a close contest. In general, I think I would root for the school with more to lose so typically I am glad if SDSU is playing for a bowl game, but OSU is often playing for a title so I would root for the Buckeyes. In basketball, OSU can more afford a loss than my Aztecs in terms of tournament hopes, but if they meet in the tournament then my head might explode.

If you are only geographically tied, or another weaker connection to Ohio State than being an alum or having a close relative being an alum, then I think those types of fans can be more free-agents with their loyalties in the non-football sports.

One thing I've noticed in this particular topic is a wide discrepancy in defining "Bandwagon." To me this is a person who shallowly follows a sport and picks the winning team to root for. This is different than a person who has picked a team and stuck with it for their life but may have picked that team because of their relative winning tendencies. I think in general, we pick our teams to root for at a young age and pick the most competitive and geographically close team to our homes and we pick the 1st one that comes to us. They don't have to be winning the championships, just at least winning or competing at a high level. Its why the Cubs still have fans and the Pirates don't. The Cubs compete for a pennant about once or twice a decade, and the Pirates... not so much.

I really don't give a shit what my alma mater does in sports...

Go Bucks.

Ohio State has a rifle team?

Who has the best rifle team? That's my favorite.
When I was an undergrad, the tOSU rifle team coach Pat Cherry taught an archery class I took-very cool guy. I believe tOSU has had several NCAA pistol/rifle champs in the past decade or so.

Any reason for that? If you don't mind my asking. My main point was in reference to alums of Ohio State specifically mostly because of the degree of excellence in most departments and athletics especially. If you are an OSU alum with a pulse, it seems obvious you should be very proud of your university in any capacity (academics, research or sports) even if you dislike sports.

No problem with anything you've posted, I just used your 'not post about it" comment to set up a stupid joke.

I usually try not to be too serious in threads like this, since it's very easy for somebody's feathers to get ruffled if they think their fanhood is being questioned.

Although some of them deserve it. But, by definition, they don't know who they are. :wink2:
You're no real fan. A real fan would come to the spring game even if he lived 2 states aw...

Umm...

A real fan would go to the team's bowl g..

ummm...

Would see Ohio State play in every big ten stadi....

Fuck you, bb73.

That's all.
