Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

Rob, what are your favorite pro teams if you dont mind me asking?

I hate pro sports outside of baseball...too much playing for the paycheck and not enough playing for the love of the game...

I can't stand to watch the NBA...

...but I can get into the NFL in certain circumstances...

I follow players, not teams...

Currently I pay attention to the Colts, Saints, Steelers, Ravens, Dolphins and Packers...

I probably don't have to tell you why...

nah, that's not jumping on a bandwagon

I live less than an hour from the Superdome.
I've seen more Saints fans this year than I had from '78-'08 combined.

For the record, I am not really a Saints fan.
Since they are the home team, I'm happy that they won, but I have little/no emotional ties to the team.

I usually follow the players on my fantasy team during football season.
And when the playoffs start, I look at the teams participating, decide which of them has my favorite former Tiger on their roster. that's who I'll pull for.

If two teams are playing that have no former tigers as contributors, I root against the team containg my most hated from rival.

Well said therobb, when we are growing up it is often not obvious why we choose to root for teams that we do. I think your being a fan of OSU and Duke is consistent and persistent which is NOT a bandwagon fan. For me its the whole thing of consistency and sticking with your teams through the ups and downs, which it seems you do.

Ditto, I just follow the players now. The NFL has no loyalties to fans or players and the players are the entire game really. If I like a player for the person they are and what they do on the field I will follow them throughout their career and root for them like Drew Brees.

Rooting for OSU in football and other teams in other sports is like being married and seeing other women.

So what's the problem?

You can root for Michigan's basketball team for all I care.

Just don't let my wife catch you. It is not pretty.

Appreciated...

I'm currently going to Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, OK...who's had an elite basketball team since the early 60's...my mom and dad both graduated from here in '85 and I've become a big fan of the team...I really had no allegiance toward the Bison when I came here, despite the fact that my parents are both alumn...but since I've been attending they've become my #1 (in the NAIA that is)...and I attend games and events in just about everything I can...

...even things I enjoy but never thought I'd follow...like tennis and golf

So you never know what's going to make you a fan...

It's unfortunate that so many of the people here have this "good 'ol boy" mentality about this...

I'm pretty sure that isn't a general trait among Buckeye faithful...

You said your dad moved to NC for his job and started following Duke. Whether he closely follows Duke or not, he started off following them purely because he lived in NC. How is that different then what I quoted?

Are you just looking to argue or do you really want me to point it out for you?

He didn't move away from Ohio and suddenly become a Duke fan...leaving Ohio State and all that it means to him behind. The context of what you quoted was a response to a scenario where someone has a tie to a program then moves away from where that program is and culminates a completely different tie to a completely different program replacing everything you already have...

I wouldn't take anyone seriously who does something like that...

...if you asked my dad what his #1 team is in basketball he'd without a doubt say Ohio State...you don't play basketball will Mel Nowell from the time they were kids all the way through college and not have a heartstring tied to Buckeye basketball...

Ok. From what you have been saying I implied that your dad was Duke first as well.

Why? Not because "Duke is good. So I root for them" believe me, they've been far from bandwagon status for nearly a decade...I haven't been proud of anything they've done for years...but because I was raised a Duke fan...by a man who ATTENDED Ohio State, has brothers who attended and PLAYED for Ohio State and lived in North Carolina for long enough to pick up a Duke allegiance simply because he loved the sport of basketball...I root for the Blue Devils...

I did read what was written, but you never said that your dad was OSU first. It seemed from what you had written that your dad was just like you.
