you can be a bandwagon fan all you want; just don't be surprised if or upset when buckeye fans who don't pick and choose their favorite teams think less of those who do.TheRob8801;1680600; said:...so far the general consensus is that it's not okay to be a "bandwagoner" and if you like different colleges for different sports that makes you one.

3074326;1680748; said:I've tried to stay out of this for the most part, but I don't see how it's silly that the overwhelming majority of people find it a problem that you'd root for Duke basketball over OSU basketball.
It's not silly.
TheRob8801;1680758; said:That's not what I find silly. Not even close.
I completely understand the idea that if you root for Ohio State in ALL things you are a better fan of The Ohio State University than I am. I agree wholeheartedly. Anyone who considers Ohio State their #1 team in ALL sports is a much better fan of The Ohio State University than I am.
HOWEVER, what I find silly, is that in that same scenario, I'm not allowed to claim my allegiance to Ohio State football in the same regard that you guys do. It's silly that I'm any less of an Ohio State football fan than any of you simply because I don't claim the school's basketball team as my #1 as well.

OSU_Buckguy;1680756; said:...like it or not, there are strata of buckeye fans. nowhere near the top are those fans who would root against ohio state because of an affinity for some other program.
OSU_Buckguy;1680756; said:...how one can root for ohio state one month and then root against them the next is beyond the comprehension of so many true buckeye fans.
OSU_Buckguy;1680756; said:...and, yes, that may happen this year. though it is not a certainty, ohio state and duke are positioned to face each other in the b10-acc challenge. perhaps then you'll finally realize that you're nowhere near a true buckeye but instead a part-time buckeye
Nutriaitch;1680757; said:You're from Atlanta, so you have an excuse for being a Braves fan.
You have connections to OSU, so that's all good.
You have no good reason to be a dookie, except that they were good when you were a kid.
3074326;1680760; said:You're allowed to do whatever you want. Doesn't bother me. I'm not personally offended by your allegiances, just confused. I just don't understand how you can root against your favorite school in anything. Doesn't make sense. And I don't see how you could find the other side of the fence so ridiculous to the point that it's silly.
3074326;1680760; said:I get why you're a Duke fan.. your dad brought you up on them and that's not your fault (lol). But what I don't get is how you can root against your favorite school. And even if I ignore that part, I don't get how you find anyone who finds this a little odd as "silly."
3074326;1680760; said:Is your dad's favorite basketball team Duke or OSU?
TheRob8801;1680762; said:I've mentioned before in this thread that I would consider The Ohio State University my "favorite school" if I had to choose one. I root for them in EVERY single situation in EVERY sport for EVERY minute of EVERY game EXCEPT: If they were to ever play Duke in basketball.
That singular instance is enough to spark such controversy?
THAT is what seems ridiculous and silly to me.
See above.
He would never choose. Wouldn't make sense for him to do so. He follows Ohio State basketball with the same fervor he follows Duke basketball. He roots for them equally and holds the same emotional ties to both teams.
He spends more of his free time with the Duke program (as previously mentioned) but I would be amiss if I took that as saying it was his favorite.
3074326;1680773; said:...But if you're not claiming a favorite team unless you have to.. then whatever.
3074326;1680773; said:Didn't he have pretty strong ties to OSU basketball?
3074326;1680773; said:If so, I don't understand your dad. From what I remember reading he didn't have any ties to Duke until he moved there.
The whole rooting in sports thing is weird. I don't get too fired up about who people root for. My main problem was that you didn't understand why people thought it was weird. 'Cause it kind of is.. in all honesty.
TheRob8801;1680761; said:I don't get it. :(
jwinslow;1680786; said:Your attempt at a gumbo zinger failed miserably. The two quotations you tried to call out weren't contradictory.
jwinslow;1680781; said:Why didn't he learn to love duke football when he moved out there?
I was raised by a die-hard spartan in central pa, which was very diluted/disinterested in college sports. In hs I lived in nd/msu land.
I couldve easily been an msu bball fan and followed a non-terrible football team, perhaps one from my area or someone random like osu.
If I came here with that dichotomy:
- would I let it phase my enjoyment of osu football? Nope.
- would I understand why diehard fans find it to be conflicting and/or wrong? Sure.
I became an osu football fan in a somewhat bandwagon manner - though they weren't great when I adopted them during a weird childhood phase.
On another note, o-h nailed it when he called out the bandwagon basketball crowd that fills the seats in the schott. Very sad and we're beyond lucky that the rest of the perks have helped keep thad from moving on to a more 'real' basketball program [/deonte]
