Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

Yep. I loves me some Vanderbilt Women's Lacrosse

I prefer Northwestern's Women's Lacrosse team. It's OK because I live in the Chicago area and I had a kid attend Northwestern. Just because they've currently won 5 straight NCs doesn't make me a bandwagon fan.

I was upset that they beat the Buckeyes 17-10 yesterday.

I've mentioned before in this thread that I would consider The Ohio State University my "favorite school" if I had to choose one. I root for them in EVERY single situation in EVERY sport for EVERY minute of EVERY game EXCEPT: If they were to ever play Duke in basketball.

Why would you consider OSU to be your favorite school if you had to choose one?

The ties my family has to the school.

The fact that I find myself pulling for the school to do well on a whole, rather than just a specific sporting event.

The overwhelming tradition both academically and athletically.

I've come to find that on a whole, Buckeye fans are (with exception: see below) some of the most intelligent, classy and well-versed fans in more than one sport.

...that was sarcastic, J. BUCKYLE said I was dense...I jokingly said I don't get it...
But the point stands, he wasn't eating his gumbo and having it too. His statements weren't contradictory.

I'm not sure why this is confusing. College fandom is about loyalty, whether based on your alma mater, home town team, or just the program you have always rooted for.

Rooting for the hometown team isn't challenging, but if that support does not fade the loyalty of it is admirable... In contrast to the Texas, florida, unc gear that magically surfaces in ohio then disappears.

That's why other schools in other sports is offensive to fans who have been loyal to one banner all of these years. These aren't pro teams, they aren't randomly placed groups of mercenaries who might play for the bitter rival next year. They are student athletes who give their only half decade of college sports to one university.

There's nothing wrong with having other programs you like. Many here have fondness for Texas, others for dantonio and msu.

You also don't have to follow all sports. How many crew fans are there in buckeye land? Obviously there aren't that many devoted bball fans.

Others aren't passionate enough to truly have one team. They follow osu, duke, unc when it is convenient but don't care enough to choose or get into it seriously.

But you should only have one favorite.

Well, I would say the different colleges/different sports things trumps the bandwagon thing in terms of being a problem, IF said fan remains a fan of the bandwagon team continually , regardless of a sudden downturn-ala-scUM:biggrin:.

Then again, who ever hears of team splitters rooting for a team that sucks-you never hear someone say "I'm a Detroit Lions, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Timberwolves, Purdue football, Nebraska hoops fan"
I've gotta call bullshit if you're going to extend this to every sport, pro and college. People can decide who to root for based on things other than location if they want.

Fandom is only justified by birthright or regional distance. There are no if's, and's or but's about it. The only TRUE Duke fans were born in Durham (not just North Carolina, because there are SOOO MANY schools there) before the 70's.

whatever helps you sleep at night.

you claim to have no birthright/regional ties to a college basketball team.

we think that your ties to OSU should include all sports, not just the sports you pick and choose.

simply LOOKING for a team other than OSU is where you sinned.

going out and choosing one of the most successful team of your lifetime was bandwagoning.

ok, I'll break this down as simply as possible.

rooting for different schools iin different sports is the EXACT same thing as:

  • rooting for the Russians in Olympic hockey
  • the Japs in the World baseball classic
  • the canadians in whatever is they're good at
  • some European people at the World Cup.

you're rooting for Communism!
