Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

So you were an LSU field hockey fan long before you even knew what field hockey was? Can you HONESTLY say that? Were you watching swim meets on TV as an infant? Did you attend the first game of the volleyball season before you were able to stand up on your own?

It's the same thing that's been tossed about the entire thread...

if I were a fan of any of those sports, then my answer would be yes.
we're not saying you should like every sport.
just that you should root for your team in whatever sports you do follow.

I do have a serious question for y'all though.

2) I grew up in Atlanta
3) My parents took me to games

Is the fact that I'm an Atlanta Braves diehard any less meaningful because

rooting for your "hometown" team is acceptable.
so my sons being LSU fans aren't penalized just because they were born during a great stretch.

but being from Atlanta, if you were to pull for the Yankees "just because", well that's being a bandwagoner.

Is the problem being a bandwagoner, or liking different colleges for different sports?

I'm still trying to figure that one out myself...

...so far the general consensus is that it's not okay to be a "bandwagoner" and if you like different colleges for different sports that makes you one.

Real good conversation!

Prove your integrity by rooting for Penn State basketball.

I'm about 80% positive that that's a joke...

...but it would fall in line with the rest of the logic in this thread so I'm not too sure.

Well, I would say the different colleges/different sports things trumps the bandwagon thing in terms of being a problem, IF said fan remains a fan of the bandwagon team continually , regardless of a sudden downturn-ala-scUM:biggrin:.

Then again, who ever hears of team splitters rooting for a team that sucks-you never hear someone say "I'm a Detroit Lions, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Timberwolves, Purdue football, Nebraska hoops fan"

the opposite end of the spectrum here, but is it okay to be a fan of only one sports team

even when Ohio State makes runs in the tournament like this year I find myself more excited about spring practice starting soon than the game tomorrow night

granted, I don't like basketball that much anyways, but I almost feel bad for the basketball team that I just don't care that much

I think the rule presently presented is that if you're interested in multiple sports, you MUST root for the same team universally.

So, according to that "rule" you're safe.

Then again, there are some in the camp of "you root for the school not the sport's team", so you're not truly a Buckeye.

Seems silly to me.

I root like hell for the Buckeye basketball team, I just don't care as much whether they win or lose (when the football team loses it literally makes me sick to my stomach), and I feel bad for not caring as much about the one compared to the other.

Well, those are my sentiments exactly (sorry, probably a killshot) so I'm going to say that it's okay.

randomly selecting different teams from around the country (OSU, Duke, Braves) all of whom "coincedentally" are successful, makes you a bandwagoner.

I've tried to stay out of this for the most part, but I don't see how it's silly that the overwhelming majority of people find it a problem that you'd root for Duke basketball over OSU basketball.

It's not silly.

These are schools. The OSU football team and OSU basketball team are directly related because of the school. It's not like the Browns and Bengals, where they're just in the same state. It's something completely different. I love Ohio State and everything about it. I root for Ohio State sports because of it.

Ohio State football and Ohio State basketball = Ohio State

Ohio State is my favorite school. That means that their sports are also my favorites. It's a greater thing here than just sports. The only way I can understand someone rooting against their favorite school is if they really didn't find that much of a connection with their "favorite" in the first place. No offense.
